I never noticed it before, but our reading from Mark's gospel is similar to the story in John's gospel of the wedding feast at Cana. They begin with a problem presented to Jesus: Lack of wine (John) and a place for Passover meal (Mark.) They both involve jars of water. Jesus responds to both by giving orders: to the waiters (Jn) and to the apostles (Mk.) And both have miraculous changes: water into wine (Jn) and bread and wine into Jesus' Body and Blood (Mk.) Now the wedding feast showed Jesus using the water meant for purification and changing it to wine for a wedding. The Jews needed to purify any dishes in order to keep the kosher laws. But Jesus replaced those laws with a new one, the law of love, symbolized by the wedding. In our gospel today, Jesus replaces ordinary food with spiritual food. He is doing something new, beyond the requirements of the Old Testament. What does that mean for us? Jesus is showing God's love for us in a new way. You might say he is replacing the way he comes to us. The bread and wine at the last Supper were signs of Jesus' body being broken and his blood poured out for us on the cross. When he gave his life for us, he rose from the dead to give us hope. And now we have the Eucharist, in which he becomes our new food and drink. Just as the Passover meal became a sign of Jesus' real death on the cross, our Eucharist is the sacrament of his real presence among us today. Do we really believe that the Eucharist is Jesus, the Son of God? The way to measure that is to ask, how has Jesus changed your life? Do you love others more because you know God loves you? Do you have less fear of the future, because the Holy Spirit gives you courage? Do your children know Jesus, because you share your faith with them? In the Eucharist, God gives us a new way to be with him. Let us look forward to being renewed in spirit whenever we receive the Body and Blood of Christ. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

June 3, 2018 Page Five The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ THE NEW COVENANT Perhaps this year we could refer to this feast day as "The Blood and Body of Christ," since the readings we have today use the word "blood" so frequently-eight times to one use of the word "body." The New Testament authors, when referring to the sacrificial aspect of Jesus' death on the cross, never refer to him giving his body as a sacrifice for our salvation, but only speak of the shedding of his blood. In both Testaments, it is blood that is the primary source and sign of the covenant between God and people. In our day, while we speak quite a bit about the Mass as a sacrifice, it is a bit of an anomaly that we focus so much (almost exclusively, sometimes) on the symbol of the bread become Body rather than the wine become Blood to give the life of the New Covenant. Here, as in almost every part of life, we would benefit more from living in a "both/and" and not an "either/or" mode. A BLOODLESS BODY? We have been given a deep and rich pair of symbols to express the fullness of Jesus' self-gift on the cross. In its celebration of the Eucharist, even when reception of Communion by all the faithful was infrequent and when the emphasis was on looking upon (called "ocular" communion) rather than receiving the elements, the Church has always preserved the duality of these symbols, since the sacrifice of Christ would not have been possible without both blood and body. So, too, is it for us who are sent from the eucharistic celebration. We are not merely "Christ-ed" bodies in the world; we need to be the very Blood of Christ coursing through the veins of daily life at home, in the workplace, at school-wherever the Spirit leads us and guides us. As we pray "Lord, send your Spirit on these gifts," we must also pray that the same Spirit is sent upon us through the thanksgiving of our Eucharist, so we may become Body-and Blood-for the life of the world. Copyright (c) 2005, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. PRECIOUS BLOOD On this solemnity we focus our a en on on the Body and Blood of Christ. We listen to the story of the renewal of the old covenant, which Moses sealed by splashing the blood of animals on the altar of sacrifice, as well as on the people. Jesus, whose blood is the blood of the new covenant, shed that precious blood on the cross, saving us from sin and promising us everlas ng life. Blood is the life source that courses through our bodies. The precious blood of Christ is the life source for our spirits. Today may we, like the psalmist, offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to the Lord, whose Body and Blood strengthen us to bring the Good News to everyone we meet. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
