Drayton Valley Rotary Club Rotary Club Bulletin Service Above Self January 2007 Presidents Message Dear Fellow Rotarians, In the words of R. I. President, William Boyd when we are asked what is Rotary, it can sometimes be difficult to give a quick and easy answer. Rotary is about so many things: friendship and fellowship, international understanding and cooperation, vocational ethics and community leadership. All these values brought us to Rotary, and all are reasons why we stay. But first and foremost, Rotary is about service and putting Service Above Self. Rotary was founded for fellowship. But it quickly grew into an organization where people who wanted to serve others came together to do it - better, more effectively, and more enjoyably than they could have alome. We re members of our clubs so we can work through them to help others. That is why we re Rotarians. That is why we re here. The four Avenues of Service are, and always will be, central to Rotary s work. They help us find balance in our choice of project and aid us in achieving the Object of Rotary. Through Club Service. Vocational Service, Community Service, and International Service, we strive to uphold this ideal. Every project we carry out - every playground we refurbish, every well we help dig, every adult we teach to read, every child we immunize against polio - makes the world we all live in a bit better, a bit healthier, a bit happier. And it demonstrates to others that in the long term, we do not succeed professionally despite our commitment to doing what is right - we succeed because of it. Everything we do in Rotary supports the Object of Rotary. When we work to strengthen The Rotary Foundation, we re building greater resources to support our service. When we work to increase membership, we re doing it so we ll have more hands to carry out our projects. By upholding our commitment to our four Avenues of Service, we honour the generations of Rotarians who followed them in the past - and Lead the Way for generations to come. As we reach the half way point in this Rotary year, I wish to that each one of you for your support and cooperation. I really enjoyed our visit to the Extended Care facility where we sang Christmas Carols, handed out pins and visited with the residents. Hands - on activities such as this, remind each one of us why we joined Rotary. This year I would like to see us provide a Christmas Dinner for the truly needy in our community. I know that Rotarians who share this vision, will step forward with me to make it happen. Page 2 Drayton Valley Rotary Club Eagle Ridge Provincial Park & Blue Rapids Recreational Area Rob MacIntosh announced at the January 11th Rotary meeting that if the proposal for a new Provincial Park is approved by the Provincial Government, it will be named The Eagle Point Provincial Park. This park started as an initiative of the Drayton Valley Rotary Club, the Pembina Nordic Ski Club and the Drayton Valley ATV Club. The Provincial park will cover 2400 hectares (approx 6000 acres) and will span the area between the the Hwy 22 North Saskatchewan Bridge and the Berrymoore bridge on both sides of the river (excluding privately owned lands). The core of the Provincial Park will be the existing Rotary trail system, the new additional trails and the existing Pembina Nordic Ski Trails equaling 40km of excellent trails suitable for cycling, hiking and cross-country skiing. There is also the possibility of a couple of low impact campgrounds. The Blue Rapids Recreational Area will encompass 4500 hectares of land on both sides of the river stretching from North Saskatchewan Bridge to the corner of Wash Out Creek (directly south of Violet Grove) Portions of this area will be set aside for an extensive good quality motorized trail system also including campgrounds, parking lots and washrooms. Rotary Facts History The world s first service club was the Rotary Club of Chicago, Illinois, USA. The club was formed 23 February 1905 by lawyer Paul P. Harris and three friends a merchant, a coal dealer, and a mining engineer. Harris wished to recapture the friendly spirit he had felt among businesspeople in the small town where he grew up. The name Rotary was derived from the early practice of rotating meetings among members offices. Mission The main objective of Rotary is service in the community, in the workplace, and throughout the world. Rotary volunteers build goodwill and peace, provide humanitarian service, and encourage high ethical standards in all vocations. The Rotary motto is Service Above Self. Membership Rotary members are professional men and women who work as volunteers to improve the quality of life in their home and world community. Club membership represents a cross-section of local business and professional leaders. The world s Rotary clubs meet weekly and are non-political, nonreligious and open to all cultures, races, and creeds.
Page 3 Happy New Year from Sarah Hello, Everyone! Feliz y Prospero Año! I hope everyone had a wonderful New Years and Christmas! Here it was pretty fun! There traditions are so different! For Christmas it is celebrated on the 24th and the 25th is almost nothing! Christmas wasn't so big, I woke up at 12:00, ate breakfast with my family! Then we all chilled and did what we wanted (I made Torta Negra for dessert) until 4:00! Then we went and ate lunch at Subway! Came home finished cooking supper, got all dressed up and then ate the wonderful supper at 9:00! When we were finished we went and visited the family of my dad and then after the family of my mom! We arrived back home at 3:00 and went to bed! Just experiencing Christmas in a different culture is something amazing and I would definitely love to do it again! New Years was AWESOME! It was at first with family- we had a turkey dinner (cooked Venezuelan style) lets just say they need to take some lessons from Canada! Then went to visit my Dads family and then we went to visit my moms family in another town like 10 minutes away! There traditions here for New Years are crazy! First of all the Fireworks (this all happened on Christmas to) the minute it gets dark outside-around 7 people start to shoot of fireworks-everyone from 4 year olds to the parents! This does not stop till the next day when the sun comes out! And there is crazy amounts of them-everywhere! Another crazy tradition they have is after Christmas people build these dummies and put clothes on them and then put them on for show-they are called Año Viajo(Old Year)! The little kids try to collect money for fireworks to blow them up! Then on the 31st they cover them in gas and light them on fire, then they throw fireworks on them and make huge explosions! It is pretty neat-i guess it just represents saying good bye to the old year! Well, after all these exciting activities with the family we went out with exchange student friends-first to a house to celebrate one girls birthday and then to a club where we stayed until the sun came out the next morning! We got home safely at around 10:00 in the morning! Wow, that was a New Years I will definitely not forget! Well, I will be switching families in 6 days and it sure brings mixed feelings! I have a really close relationship with this family now and I love everything about it-the house, the food, EVERYTHING! My next family I hear is not so good-but I am willing to try change is good-it is also a big part of Rotary-to live with 3 different families. So, I am definitely Sad, worried, happy, excited-every emotion you could think of! After that on the 8th, I am going on the Tour de Venezuela! Which I am soo excited for! I will get to spend 24days with 40 of the coolest people in the world! Together we will travel to the beaches, jungle and of course the highest waterfall in the world! His phone number there is 727-2615. You have a much better chance of communicating with him via email @ cereal_biker@hotmail.com The Mulligan s took Gabe on our annual Banff ski trip last week. He is an awesome snowboarder and would love any opportunity to hit the slopes again. Terry took him in after Christmas also. Believe it or not, his time will start to fill up soon. Already his calendar: Jan 19 and 20 - Counselor and inbound student ski trip (counselor meetings :( and student skiing :) Yellowknife trip 2nd week of February Orientation weekend in Edmonton March 8, 9, 10 District Conference May 18-20 Canoe Trip Last week of May, 1st few days of June Time has a habit of going way too fast. Before you know it, summer will be here and Gabe will be packing up to go. DON'T MISS YOUR CHANCE TO GET TO KNOW HIM - he's very entertaining! On January 18th Gabriel gave us a very entertaining presentation on his home in France. Rotary International Rotary Peace Fellows Rotary World Peace Fellows are graduates of the Rotary Centers for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution program. They will be a part of tomorrow s solution in promoting greater tolerance and cooperation among people worldwide. Rotary World Peace Fellows, who are chosen from a wide variety of countries, can help future leaders advance knowledge and understanding. Located in eight leading universities around the world, Rotary Centers provide Fellows the chance to study in a master s level program in conflict resolution, peace studies, international relations, and other related disciplines. Rotary World Peace Fellows work toward mediation, conflict resolution, and peace where there is war. Understanding where there is disharmony. Food security where there is hunger. Health care where there is disease. Education where there is illiteracy. Conservation where there is environmental degradation, and sustainable economic development where there is poverty. Read more information about the worldtransforming program, We bid Farewell At the end of January we bid farewell to Peter Yeung & his wife Helena. Peter is relocating to Lashburn Saskatchewan. Peter held the position of President Elect and the lead the Community Services Committee. Peter will be replaced by Ryan Modrall as President Elect and by Mardi Dancy as the Director of the Community Services Committee. We will miss Peter s smiling face, great sense of humor and his wonderful singing voice when leading us in our national anthem. Look for an announcement on Peter & Helena s farewell party. From the earliest days of the organization, Rotarians were concerned with promoting high ethical standards in their professional lives. One of the world s most widely printed and quoted statements of business ethics is The Four-Way Test, which was created in 1932 by Rotarian Herbert J. Taylor (who later served as RI President) when he was asked to take charge of a company that was facing bankruptcy. This 24- word test for employees to follow in their business and professional lives became the guide for sales, production, advertising, and all relations with dealers and customers, in 1943, The Four-Way Test has been translated into more than a hundred languages and published in thousands of ways. It asks the following four questions: Of the things we think, say or do: 1. Is it the TRUTH? 2. Is it FAIR to all concerned? 3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIEND- SHIPS? 4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all Concerned?.
