But remember, the foundation of stewardship is prayer. When we are in close communication with God, it opens our heart and it turns our attention away from me and moves it towards God and others. It allows us to have a little more empathy for our enemy. When we pray for others even our enemies it perhaps softens their hearts as well. This weekend, our parish is conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The ACA theme, Love Your Neighbor As Yourself, was selected to remind us that our contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal enable the funded ministries and services to share God s love with many others in our parish and our Archdiocese. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Your contribution will help support the Archdiocese s many ministries and services: Grants and scholarships for schools and parish ministries serving economically disadvantaged communities and SPRED in more than 100 parishes Family Ministries and Respect Life programs supporting the dignity of life from conception to natural death Love, the Lord tells us, is never abstract or distant; it sees and it responds. The compassion shown by the Samaritan is an image of the infinite mercy of God, who always sees our needs and draws near to us in love. The command to love God and neighbor, then, is supremely practical; it entails caring for others even to the point of personal sacrifice. Jesus himself is the model of the Good Samaritan. By imitating his love and compassion, we show ourselves truly to be his followers. ~Pope Francis, General Audience April 26, 2016 Recruitment and formation of lay ministers and deacons and ongoing spiritual formation of priests Ministries of care and comfort to those in need locally and to the poor in foreign lands Heavenly Father, Help us to realize the overwhelming needs of others right here in our communities; Those who need support, comfort, and, most of all, those who need to hear the good news of salvation that your Son, Jesus Christ, made possible. Open our hearts to the realization that we should share the blessings You have given us, by seeing that others receive assistance and the Sacraments. Bless our efforts as we work together with our brothers and sisters in parishes throughout the Archdiocese to provide support to so many people through the Annual Catholic Appeal. Amen. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response! FEBRUARY 19, 2017 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 3

LUKE River Forest, IL

St. Luke is losing a real music aficionado this month as Sister Maureen Sauer, SNDdeN, retires from St. Luke s music ministry after 17 years of service here. I think it is the fact that all of my life I have been passionate about music, Sister said when she started at St. Luke in 2000. I have been involved in some form of music either in the classroom or in parish ministry. Through the years, the Sister of Notre Dame de Namur has had a rich and varied career, which was characterized by her love of music, the beautiful tones of her professionally trained voice, and her dedication to excellence in all things. With degrees from the Cincinnati College Conservatory and Northwestern University, she has taught grade school and high school, has sung as a soloist and in choruses, most notably the Lyric Opera Chorus for nine seasons, and has served in music ministry in a variety of roles. Before coming here, she served as music director at St. Catherine-St. Lucy Parish for 21 years. She also was much in demand as a clinician and instructor at Northeastern Illinois University and for cantor workshops sponsored by the Archdiocese of Chicago s Office of Divine Worship. She also held a variety of leadership roles for her congregation, the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur. At St. Luke, Sr. Maureen has served as choir director, has guided the parish music ministry as director of music, performed the roles of organist and cantor director, and has offered private vocal instruction. I believe that among the many signs and symbols used by the Church to celebrate its faith, music is of preeminent importance, she once said. Music can lead the assembly to a richer, fuller experience of the holy. I feel privileged to share in this ministry. Sister Maureen will be moving to her order s motherhouse in Ohio later this month. Cards and well wishes may be dropped off at the rectory until February 24. After that, they should be mailed directly to Sister at: Mount Notre Dame 701 E Columbia Avenue Cincinnati, OH 45215-3999 513-761-7636 On Saturday, March 11, the Archdiocese invites all altar servers and their families from our Vicariate to a special Mass and celebration in appreciation of their service to Christ, the Church, and the parishes they serve. Bishop John Manz will celebrate the Mass at 11:30 am at St. Priscilla Church in Chicago, with lunch, games, and activities to follow, including an opportunity for the altar servers and their family to take a picture with the bishop. The event is free, but you must sign up in advance. Please RSVP to Fr. Steve before February 27 at 435-8922 or sbauer@stlukeparish.org. We are preparing to publish a new St. Luke Parish Directory, and part of that preparation is assuring that the information we have for each household is correct and approved for use. The last directory was published in 2014, and if your listing is still correct and no changes or additions are required, there is no need to respond. However, if you ve registered in the parish since 2013, or if the listing of your name/s, address, telephone number, or email address in the 2014 edition needs updating, please contact Agnes at the parish office (435-8912 or akomperda@stlukeparish.org) as soon as possible. Thank you for taking the time to respond so that the 2017 Parish Directory can be as accurate and complete as possible. FEBRUARY 19, 2017 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 5

St. Luke Parish children preparing for their First Eucharist took a step closer to the sacrament with our traditional celebration of Jesus Day last Saturday afternoon. With their parents at their side, the children made banners, designed their First Communion plates, and practiced their Communion Meditation song. Father John, Fr. Steve, Sr. Colleen, and Kitti McSorley led the children and parents on group tours of the church. It was a wonderful day to think about What will it be like when I receive Jesus? Please continue to pray for the children of our parish as they continue sacramental preparation for the reception of their First Eucharist on April 29. Look for additional photos on our parish Facebook page at facebook.com/stluke.riverforest. Lent, which begins this year with Ash Wednesday on March 1, is the season of silence. It is a time to enter into the desert as Jesus did for 40 years. In the upcoming February 26 issue of Chicago Catholic newspaper, please look for the article from Cardinal Blase Cupich about Lent and 6 WELCOME TO ST. LUKE River Forest, IL silence (also online at chicagocatholic.com). In this article, the Cardinal asks all pastors to invite their communities to take extra time for silence after Communion to allow God to speak to us for nothing in all of creation is so like God as silence.

LUKE River Forest, IL The St. Luke Peace and Justice Committee invites all parishioners to join a discussion of the book Who Speaks for Islam by John Esposito of Georgetown University during March and early April. The concept of this timely book is simple. After collecting vast amounts of data representing the views of the world s Muslims, the author asked the questions everyone wants the answers to: What is at the root of antiamericanism in the Muslim world? Who are the extremists? What do Muslim women really want? With these and other questions in hand, the author let the empirical evidence dictate the answer. The group will meet three times to discuss the book on March 6, March 20, and April 3, starting at 7:30 pm. The first meeting will be at Sylvia Giura s home at 935 Bonnie Brae in River Forest. The second meeting will be at the home of Gail Haffner, and the final evening will be at Renee and Terry Norton s home. (Participants are asked to read the first third of the book prior to the first meeting.) For any questions, call Tony Graefe, 848-9753, or Mary Ann Tuerk, 366-7984.

At the commencement of the Advent season, our 5th graders were given a gift. The students and both 5th grade teachers each received a cash donation in the amount of $50 from an anonymous donor. The gift came with only one stipulation: The goal was to pay it forward and donate the money to a worthy cause. Before donating to the charity of their choice, the students participated in several activities in the classroom. First, they learned about the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. The students worked in teams to create presentations that displayed their knowledge of specific works of mercy. They then brainstormed a list of charities they thought would benefit from their donation. The research included information on the background of the organization, where or who their money would go to, and an explanation of why they chose each charity. The students were then given time to share their ideas with the whole class. The 5th graders and their parents worked together to find the perfect fit for their charity thereby allowing a connection to be made between home and school. Hephzibah House, Rett Syndrome Association, Advocate Lutheran General, and Misericordia are among the many organizations that the students chose for their money. Some students also started Facebook pages to raise even more money to give to their charity, and some parents matched the original donation. After much reflection and discussion, the final part of this project was a letter to the anonymous donor. The students wrote not only a letter of thanks, but also a reflection and description of where each one donated the money and why. It was a wonderful way of truly teaching the students the meaning of Advent. FEBRUARY 19, 2017 Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time 9
