Lesson Four: The Parable Of The Lost Coin 1
2
3
Luke 15:1. Then drew near unto him all the publicans and sinners for to hear him. 2 And the Pharisees and scribes murmured, saying, This man receives sinners, and eats with them. 4
Luke 15:8. "Or what woman having ten silver coins, if she loses one of them, does not light a lamp, sweep the house, and search carefully until she finds it? 9 When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, 'Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost. 10 Just so, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents." 5
Jesus taught three Parables on this occasion: A.The Parable of the lost sheep B.The Parable of the lost coin C.The Parable of the lost boy or son 6
A comparison of the Parables shows: A.The sheep was lost because of its own carelessness. B.The coin was lost because of the carelessness of it s owner. C.The son was lost because of his own free choice. 7
The Lost Coin, A Roman Denarii 8
Our lesson today is about the lost coin. We need to remember: The lost coin retained it s value even though it was out of circulation. 9
One is lost to service when he/ she is out of helpful contact with his fellow man. One may be present at church services and yet be lost (like the coin) because his/ her talents, money, usefulness, and wisdom are used elsewhere. 10
One may be lost in business, domestic life, pleasure, courtship, education, aimlessness, etc. Just like the coin, lost right under our noses, in a place near to us, but we just can t find what we ve lost! 11
Have YOU ever lost your: 12
One can be too engrossed in matters of the daily life and forget to serve the Lord, or think that he/ she does not have time to do so. They are lost like the coin. 13
Note the anxiety of the woman over the lost coin. She was very upset over the lost coin. 14
We should be anxious about our lost or missing church members. James 5:19. My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and is brought back by another, 20 you should know that whoever brings back a sinner from wandering will save the sinner's soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins. 15
Matt. 15:15. "If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. 16 But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. 16
17
The woman swept the house looking for the coin. How frantic have you ever gotten over: Lost keys? A Lost Child? 18
19
How Much Value Would Just ONE Coin Have? 20
Would YOU get that agitated over the loss of a Quarter? 21
The Church Should Sweep The World In Quest Of Lost Souls 22
Mark 16:15. And he said unto them, You go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that does not believe shall be damned. 23
The Lost Are NOT Lost Because God Wants Them To Be Lost 24
II Peter 3:9. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 25
I Tim. 2:1. First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for everyone, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity. 3 This is right and is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 26
Ezekiel 33:11. Say to them, As I live, says the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from their ways and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways; for why will you die, O house of Israel? 27
Luke 15:10. Likewise, I say unto you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner that repents. 28
What About Those That Are Lost? 29
The lost are not babies. Matt. 19:14. But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. Matt. 18:3. and said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 30
People are not born away from God, but they do go astray. Isaiah 53:6. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 31
People who are not responsible are not lost. Those: Not at age of accountability Mentally incompetent 32
Rom. 4:15. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. 16 For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham 33
Sinners are lost. Sin separates from God. Isaiah 59:1. Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. 34
Sin is brought forth by lust. Uncontrolled desire. James 1:14. But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death. 35
The sinner is lost UNTIL he/ she is saved in Christ. Rom. 6:3. Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 36
Gal. 3:26. For you are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. II Tim. 2:10. Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 37
We are saved by grace. However, one can fall from grace. Gal. 5:4. You who want to be justified by the law have cut yourselves off from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. If they could fall from grace, we can too. 38
Matt. 7:21. "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name? 23 Then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; go away from me, you evildoers.' 39
Look At The Rejoicing When The Coin Was Found 40
The Woman Rejoiced When She Found The Coin 41
The Angels Rejoice When Sinners Repent 42
The whole church should rejoice when a sinner repents. 43
We should search for that which is lost like the woman who looked for the lost coin. 44
45
We are not the judges as to the value of any one soul, we are only the workmen of God, the seekers, the lookers, the finders. 46
