Reading Matthew 18:21-35 read by Heather Goodall Reader Reader A reading from the Gospel of Saint Matthew. 21 Then Peter came and said to him, Lord, if someone sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times? 22 Jesus said to him, Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven times. 23 For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24 When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents was brought to him; 25 and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. 26 So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything. 27 And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat, he said, Pay what you owe. 29 Then his fellow slave fell down and pleaded with him, Have patience with me, and I will pay you. 30 But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he would pay the debt. 31 When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him, You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you? 34 And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. 35 So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart. Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. Responsive Song God of grace God of grace, amazing wonder, irresistible and free; oh, the miracle of mercy Jesus reaches down to me. God of grace, I stand in wonder, as my God restores my soul. His own blood has paid my ransom; awesome cost to make me whole. God of grace, who loved and knew me long before the world began; sent my Saviour down from heaven; perfect God and perfect man. God of grace, I trust in Jesus; I m accepted as his own. Every day new grace sustains me, as I lean on him alone. Discover God of grace, I stand astounded, cleansed forgiven and secure. my fears are now confounded and my hope is ever sure. God of grace, now crowned in glory, where one day I ll see your face; and forever I ll adore you in your everlasting grace. Message 4 please be seated Richard Webb

Your notes: Every week we rotate through one of the following Discovery elements: 1. Q & A with today s speaker 2. Silence 3. Responding through music 4. Take home question of the week 5. Visuals The Creed People Do you believe and trust in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. please stand People People Discover Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. The Prayers of the People read by Sally Spofforth Merciful God, we have sinned in what we have thought and said, in the wrong we have done and in the good we have not done. We have sinned in ignorance, in weakness and through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry. We repent and 5

turn to you. Forgive us, for our Saviour Christ's sake, and renew our lives to the glory of your name. Amen. God, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Giving Back to God We invite you to come forward as we circle around the table up front. Bread, wine, and money are collected and placed on the table as symbols of our lives and labours. If you are visiting with us today, you are our special guests, so please do not feel compelled to give financially. Song Refrain Spirit of heaven Spirit of heaven, flood over me, forming Christ in all that I do. Turn every sinful desire in me into holy passion for you. O, Spirit of God, come down; let mercy and grace abound. My passionate prayer shall be: Christ in me. Spirit of beauty and holiness, come refine with fire from above, till I am cast in your righteousness and I love the things that you love. Refrain Breathe your forgiveness when darkness falls and my heart is heavy with sin. Fill me with faith for the higher cause of the ceaseless praise of the King. Refrain Live As we prepare to Live transformed lives, our communion meal reminds us of Jesus with us. Receiving bread, wine, or blessing are all valued ways of participating around Jesus' table. Baptized persons of any age are welcome to receive the bread and wine, and gluten-free wafers are available. If you wish to receive a blessing, please cross your arms over your chest. If you wish, the Deacon will bring communion to where you are seated. 6

Prayer over the Gifts Great and holy God, People accept our offering of labour and love. May we bring you true and spiritual worship and be one with you. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. The Eucharistic Prayer The Lord is here. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is right to praise you, Father, Lord of all creation; in your love you made us for yourself. When we turned away you did not reject us, but came to meet us in your Son. You embraced us as your children and welcomed us to sit and eat with you. In Christ you shared our life that we might live in him and he in us. He opened his arms of love upon the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin. On the night he was betrayed, at supper with his friends, he took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Father, we do this in remembrance of him: his body is the bread of life. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins; do this in remembrance of me. Father, we do this in remembrance of him: his blood is shed for all. Live The Lord s Prayer Wyse 7

Closing Prayers Everlasting God, in faith you have adopted us as your children, made us members of the body of Christ and chosen us as inheritors of your kingdom: We thank you that in this bread and wine, you renew your promises within us, empower us by your Spirit to witness and to serve, and send us out as disciples of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Join in! Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he, I ll lead you all wherever you may be, I will lead you all in the dance, said he. I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee, but they would not dance and they wouldn t follow me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; they came with me and the dance went on. Refrain I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame; the holy people said it was a shame; they whipped and they stripped and they hung me high, and they left me there on a cross to die. Refrain Live I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black it s hard to dance with the devil on your back; they buried my body and they thought I d gone but I am the dance and I still go on.
