ZION EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH Firelands Lutherans Active in Mission (FLAMe) 503 Columbus Avenue, Sandusky, OH 44870 (419) 625-2112 zionelc@zionsandusky.org Rev. Dr. Ralph Schibler, Interim Pastor Carolyn Steinfeldt, AiM, Director of Faith Formation Consecration/Christ the King November 20, 2016-8:00 & 10:30 a.m. Worship Welcome and Announcements Welcome! Jeremiah s promise of the execution of justice and righteousness in the land finds ironic fulfillment in the execution of Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. It appears so utterly contradictory that the king should be crucified with the criminal. This victory appears for all the world as ignominious defeat. Yet through the gate of death our Lord opens the door to paradise. If you are visiting for the first time or would like to share a thought or concern with the pastor, please make use of the worship cards in the pews. Welcome to Zion! Prelude And Crown Him Lord of All! Gilbert Martin (please stand) Gathering CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Pastor: In the name of God the Father of glory; in the name of God the Son, our Redeemer; in the name of God the holy and life-giving Spirit. People: Amen. Pastor: The Sun of righteousness shall rise with shining beams of healing. Let us gather under the wings of God s mercy. Silence is kept for reflection. Pastor: Gracious God, People: we acknowledge that we are sinners and we confess our sins those known to us that burden our hearts, and those unknown to us but seen by you. We know that before you nothing remains hidden, and in you everything is revealed. Free us from the slavery of sin; liberate us from the bondage of guilt; and work in us that which is pleasing in your sight; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Pastor: With a heart full of mercy and compassion, God saves us and forgives us all our sins. Christ, the dawn from on high, shines upon us and by the light of the Holy Spirit guides our feet into the way of peace. 2
People: Amen. Hymn #634 All Hail the Power of Jesus Name! Pastor: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. People: And also with you. KYRIE 3
Canticle of Praise Prayer of the Day Pastor: Let us pray. O God, our true life, to serve you is freedom, and to know you is unending joy. We worship you, we glorify you, we give thanks to you for your great glory. Abide with us, reign in us, and make this world into a fit habitation for your divine majesty, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen. 4
(please be seated) WORD First Reading Jeremiah 23:1-6 1 Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! Says the Lord. 2 Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. 3 Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. 4 I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the LORD. 5 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 6 In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: The LORD is our righteousness. Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. Second Reading Colossians 1:11-20 11 May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; 16 for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. (please stand for the Gospel) 5
Gospel Acclamation Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to the 23 rd chapter of Luke. People: Glory to you, O Lord. Gospel Luke 23:33-43 33 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. 34 Then Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing. And they cast lots to divide his clothing. 35 And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one! 36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, 37 and saying, If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself! 38 There was also an inscription over him, This is the King of the Jews. 39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us! 40 But the other rebuked him, saying, Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? 41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong. 42 Then he said, Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom. 43 He replied, Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise. Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, O Christ. (please be seated) Children s Message (10:30) Senior Choir Love Divine, All Love Excelling Mark Edwards Sermon (please stand) Hymn #798 Will You Come and Follow Me 6
NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People Leader: Let us pray. People: Have mercy, O God. Offertory Beautiful Savior Robert Hobby (please stand) Offertory Hymn #838 Beautiful Savior Offertory Prayer Pastor: Let us pray. Merciful God, as grains of wheat scattered upon the hills were gathered together to become one bread, so let your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your kingdom, for yours is the glory through Jesus Christ, now and forever. People: Amen. MEAL 7
Pastor: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Pastor: You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup; we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. Pastor: Remembering therefore To you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy church, now and forever. LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen 8
