Liturgy Weekly Reflections Fifth Sunday of Easter C April 28, 2013 Jesus' new commandment is "As I have loved you, so you also should love one another." The nature of our love as disciples is specific, singular, incomparable: we are to love to the extent and in the manner Jesus loved. Our love is to be the selfsacrificing love of Jesus. It is this kind of love which brings Jesus glory. It is this kind of love which brings God glory. It is this kind of love which enables us to share in that same glory. We are keen on underscoring obligation we must "love one another." This is only possible because of the power and grace which come from our first being loved by God. Did Jesus give us edicts, rubrics or canons? What one rule did he give us over and over? What teaching of the Church do you think will bring all people to Christ? Do you recognize saintly people by how hard they work, how much money and time they give, or how much they love others? Or both? As I have loved you, so should you love one another. How far did Jesus go in loving us? Are you ever asked to give more than you planned? How do you handle that? May 5, 2013 *Cycle B readings were chosen especially for First Communion Weekend. First Reading Acts 10:25-26,34-35,44-48/56 Peter proclaims the gift of the holy spirit was poured out upon the Gentiles, also. Psalm 98 The Lord has revealed to the nations his saving power. Second Reading 1 John 4:7-10 God is love and love comes from God so we must show love to one another. Gospel John 15:9-17 In today s Gospel we listen to Jesus words as he prays to the Father on our behalf. Jesus prays for us and consecrates us in the truth of the Father, as he sends us out as other christs into the world. How beautiful to hear Jesus prayer for us as he asks the Father to bless and protect us and to keep us safe from evil. Catholic Cemeteries We remember and give thanks at our regular Eucharistic celebrations for all of those who have died. All are invited. Unless otherwise noted, all Masses are on Saturday mornings at 10:30 am. Holyrood~205 NE 2005th St Shoreline, WA 98155 May 4, 2013 May 27, 2013 (Memorial Day) Calvary ~ 5041-35th Ave NE Seattle, WA 98105 May 11, 2013 May 27, 2013 (Memorial Day) We will be doing a decade of the rosary, during the month of May at 8:20 am on Sundays. Plan to come a little early so you can join us. The Year of Faith The Year of Faith began on October 11, 2013 and continues until November 14, 2013. The Pope and the Church calls upon us to renew our faith and deepen our relationship with Jesus during this time through daily prayer, scripture study and celebrating the Mass. We are also called to share the joy of our faith with others. As a community, at Sunday Mass following the Intercessions, we will be praying the following New Evangelization prayer to increase our witness to God s saving grace in our lives. Prayer for the New Evangelization Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom the have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent? Romans 10: 13-15 Heavenly Father, Pour forth your Holy Spirit to inspire me with these words from Holy Scripture. Stir in my soul the desire to renew my faith and deepen my relationship with your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ so that I might truly believe in and live the Good News. Open my heart to hear the Gospel and grant me the confidence to proclaim the Good News to others. Pour out your Spirit, so that I might be strengthened to go forth and witness to the Gospel in my everyday life through my words and actions. In moments of hesitation, remind me: If not me, then who will proclaim the Gospel? If not now, then when will the Gospel be proclaimed? If not the truth of the Gospel, then what shall I proclaim? God, our Father, I pray that through the Holy Spirit I might hear the call of the New Evangelization to deepen my faith, grow in confidence to proclaim the Gospel and boldly witness to the saving grace of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU Preventing child abuse is everyone s responsibility. One of the best ways we can fulfill Jesus new commandment is to protect the vulnerable among us. Here are just a few ideas: Listen to Your Children. Strong communication is the foundation for helping children stay safe. Frequently ask them about places they have been and people they have met. Teach them to say NO if someone tries to touch them and let them know they won t be in trouble for telling you if something happens. Take a few moments to read He Told Me Not to Tell - A great resources to help you talk to your kids about sexual abuse. The booklet by King County Sexual Assault Resource Center can be found at: http://issuu.com/kcsarc/docs/ htmnttrev?mode=window Create a safe environment for children by inviting others to participate. This could be as simple as inviting someone to a Safe Environment class. If you invited one person a month, at the end of the year there are 12 more people trained in child abuse prevention and even more kids being protected! A schedule of classes can be found at: www.seattle.setanet.org/classes.php. Did you know that teachers, employees, coaches and volunteers in the Archdiocese of Seattle receives abuse prevention training and must have a background check in order to work with children? What about the children who attend non- Catholic schools? Talk with school administrators and athletic programs to find out what steps they take to protect children and encourage them to do more! WORLDWIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER A Weekend of Discovery A Lifetime of Love! April 27-28, 2013 In today s Gospel Jesus commands his disciples to love one another as He has loved them. He still continues to give us this same command over 2000 years later. Do we reflect this love in our lives and relationships, especially our marriage relationship, so that our children, family, friends and even strangers see us as followers of Jesus? Let God show you how to love your spouse and others as He loves you: sign up today to attend a Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend. The next Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekend will be held in Bellevue May 31- Jun 2 (www.seattlewwme.org or call Dawn & Rory Myers at 206-772-2344). Missionary to the lepers of Molokai, Hawaii January 3, 1840 April 15, 1889 St. Damien of Molokai was born in Belgium in 1840 to a poor farmer and his wife. At the age of 13, he quit school to help his parents on the farm; when he was nineteen, he entered the Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary. Damien s older brother, Pamphile, was also a priest in this congregation, and had offered his service to the care of the lepers on the Island of Molokai. When he fell ill and couldn t go to the mission, Damien volunteered to take his place. The saint offered to stay in the leper colony permanently-he built schools, churches, hospitals and coffins. He was later joined in his work by the Franciscan Sisters of Syracuse, led by St. Marianne Cope. St. Damien contracted the disease himself, but continued to serve the mission until his death in 1889.
