From the Deacons Desk: Last week, the rich man, who had everything, Jesus says is lacking in one thing. He wanted to know what he was going to get for following the commandments. The two apostles, the Sons of Thunder, James and John, want to know what they might get for following Jesus. They hear Jesus talk about the new kingdom and they want to know their place, their role in the new authority. At our job we ask the boss for a promotion. We may be in a service club and want to be one of the officers. In a play; want the lead role; in a band and want the solo. Since the time of Jesus and still today, if we wish to be part of the Kingdom of God, we will be asked to serve, not to be served. It s not about getting but giving. Selfsacrifice is the example Jesus gives us. To raise up those who are in need of love and healing. We will likely suffer for our love for Jesus and for our God and his Church. At this point in the Gospel, it appears that the Apostles are looking at what they want, after the resurrection, with the Holy Spirit, they begin to look to the needs of others. Their needs and wants change! We can experience this as we experience Christ risen in the Eucharist. The Good News is that God gives us all that we need, in Jesus and the Holy Spirit. When we share this truth, this love with others, this is when we are standing next to Jesus in his kingdom here on earth.
