PASTOR S NOTES, STEWARDSHIP, 2ND COLLECTION Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. John Neumann, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO ME! It s not a major anniversary, but on August 1 st I commemorated my 2 nd anniversary of ministry here in the Diocese of Las Vegas! I began my ministry on August 1, 2010, as the parochial vicar at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton followed by being the administrator there in June of 2011. I would have never thought that in two short years I would then be the administrator of yet another parish. God has a way of moving beyond what we d expect for a purpose that we might not understand. But, no matter what happens, God is always by our side every step of the way. PASTOR VS. ADMINISTRATOR I ve heard some people are wondering why I m not the pastor and just the administrator. Well, the answer is very simple: Until I finish the process of becoming a diocesan priest (that is, leaving my Conventual Franciscan community and joining the Diocese of Las Vegas which will take a few years), I cannot be named a pastor. But, being the administrator carries with it much of the same duties, rights and obligations of a pastor, just without the title pastor. One difference between being an administrator and a pastor, is that the administrator does not have a set term of office as a pastor does. In other words, at this time in my life as the administrator of SJN, if Bishop Pepe needs me to minister elsewhere in the diocese, he could ask me at any time to go, and I, under obedience, would be willing to honor his request. A pastor, however, has a set term (usually 6 years, with the possibility of one additional term). Generally, those terms are honored unless there is a desperate need for a change or if there has been some scandal in which the pastor would need to be removed from ministry. Nonetheless, I couldn t be happier being with you (one month already woo-hoo!). I often ask God in my prayer what I did to deserve this great assignment. I know one day the honeymoon will be over and I ll have to make decisions that some won t like (actually, that s already happened with some very minor issues). Until then, I want to thank everyone for being patient with me as I learn the ropes and continue to settle in. Page 3 - August 5, 2012 PARISH OFFICE CLOSED FOR THE STAFF RETREAT Previously I mentioned that the parish office will be closed during our staff retreat this coming week. Because of the lack of participation in the Shakespeare trip we needed to adjust our staff retreat to help offset the financial loss of the Shakespeare trip. Therefore, please note and be prepared that the parish offices will be closed this coming Monday and Tuesday, August 6-7. Because I had already planned it, I will still take the next couple days (August 8-10) as personal days to visit friends and family in California. Many thanks to those of you who encouraged me to take those few days away! WELCOME FR. BOB KIEFER! We welcome Fr. Bob Kiefer as one of our help-out priests. Fr. Bob is retired from the Diocese of San Jose and has graciously accepted my invitation to help us with Masses here at SJN. Fr. Bob, like our other help-out priests, is NOT assigned to SJN, but simply helping us with Masses when necessary. I believe you'll find Fr. Bob and his joyful demeanor a welcome addition to SJN. Welcome Fr. Bob! You ll love your time here at SJN! And, a continued thanks to Msgr. Joe Cosgrove and Fr. Albert Felice-Pace, OP, for their continued and regular help here at SJN. We certainly are blessed with these great and dedicated servants of God! Page 6 - August 5, 2012 GET READY, GET SET start your crafting! The Marthas and Marys will again be holding their craft fair and bake sale this November and need your help. Our talented parishioners have been very generous with donations of handmade craft items to sell at this annual sale. The proceeds of this event enable us to do charitable deeds as well as help with extra projects throughout the parish. If you have any questions about your donations, please contact Judy Wunderlich at 878-8264. Our next meeting will be on September 11 at 7pm. All women 18 and over are welcome to join us for prayer, fellowship and fun. Blessed John Paul II Polish Apostolate at Our Lady of Las Vegas Parish Invites You to a Polish Dinner Sunday, August 12, 2012 The dinner will be served after the 2 pm Polish Mass at about 3 pm in the Bevan Hall. The menu consists of Pork loin, beets, sauerkraut salad, potatoes, dessert and beverage for $8. Discount for children under 12. There will also be a performance of folk dances by the Piast Polish Dancers at the dinner. Reservations are required. Please call 228-4274 or 340-7144 to make a reservation. Second Collection Next week s second collection is for the Music Ministry. This is a ministry that conscientiously prepares the sacramental music for us to enjoy and participate in. They spend many hours rehearsing for each liturgy, and countless more hours when preparing for special feasts. As with anything else, it takes money to purchase sheet music copyrights, and other supplies. Please be as generous as possible in next s week s second collection.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION This week will see the summertime celebration of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The story of the Transfiguration is proclaimed twice each year; once on the Second Sunday of Lent, and then again on August 6. In Lent, the revelation of Jesus glory foreshadows the triumph of Easter. During the summer, this feast comes significantly forty days before the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. In the Gospel proclaimed on this day, Peter wants to know if he should build three tents. In Hebrew, the tents are sukkot, rickety harvest shacks also called in English tabernacles (from the Latin word for little shelters ) that harvesters set up in fields so they can stay there to work day and night. Harvest booths are built and ornamented for the Jewish festival of Sukkot. One aspect of this festival is eager anticipation for the ingathering of all peoples (including ancestors Moses and Elijah) under God s own sukkot shalom, the tent of peace. In some patristic traditions, the late summer and early autumn of the church year are imagined as an extended ingathering festival that begins today and reaches fulfillment at Epiphany. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. THE BREAD OF LIFE Today s Gospel has the crowd asking Jesus three questions. First, When did you get here, to which Jesus responds by rebuking them for their failure to grasp his miracle as a sign, an occasion to put faith in him. Their second question about accomplishing the works of God has Jesus respond that faith is the work that God wishes. Many scholars believe this is John s answer to the faithworks dichotomy emerging in the early Christian community. Faith is the work of God in the believer, John would have us understand. The third question asked by the crowd is a request for a sign that would allow them to put faith in Jesus, as the manna in the desert allowed the Israelites to put faith in the Lord God. Jesus answers by revealing himself as the bread of life that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
