Bill grew up in a small town of Missouri with a large family of ten siblings. He joined the Vincentians as a high school seminarian and was ordained a Priest of the Congregation of the Mission of St. Vincent de Paul in 1979. He served as a Pastor in Mandarin speaking parishes in Taiwan for nearly 8 years as a missionary. After returning to the United States in 1987, Fr. Bill s next 20 years included assignments as Pastor in several parishes and missions within the Pueblo, Colorado and Colorado Springs dioceses. More recently, he served as Pastor in rural parishes of Missouri, and now enjoys extensive parish connections through the Vincentian Parish Mission Apostolate. ROSE OF LIMA PARISH Page 3 Fourth Sunday of Lent CHILDREN OF THE LIGHT The future king, David, in today s first reading, is an example of a type of character present throughout the Hebrew scriptures. He is the child born out of place (not the eldest or most favored) who ends up receiving the promise of the covenant. The spirit of God s anointing rushes upon him. In this way, he is similar to the man born blind from today s Gospel. David s family and the blind man s community did not expect the miraculous grace of God s love to work through them. Perhaps they, too, were blinded by the expectations and assumptions of those around them. Yet, after being touched by God, they both came to see the presence of God s will for them. Both became messengers of God s will. That same Spirit of God s anointing rushed upon us at our baptism; we were given a candle as a sign of our membership in the Body of Christ, the Light from Light. Our vocation, then, is to fulfill that enlightenment, that anointing, as Ephesians tells us, by living as children of the light. The V Encuentro is an initiative of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops that starts at the grass-roots level and calls for development of resources and initiatives to better serve the fast-growing Hispanic population in dioceses, parishes, ecclesial movements, and other Catholic organizations and institutions. St. Rose of Lima Church, will be holding our own V Encuentro, which consists of 5 sessions held in small groups, concluding with a parish celebration.
