Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19 I NTRO ACTIVITY: (This activity should last between five to six minutes) BEFORE CLASS FIND OUT: 1. How many miles it is from your town to Waxahachie 2. How much time it takes to travel to Waxahachie 3. Locate the town on the map so you can assist the children in finding the towns. LOCATE TODAY S TEXAS CITY OBJECTIVE: Locate your present city and the cities being discussed. As children arrive at the Missions Track, ask them to sit in a circle. Ask teachers to help ensure that each child can see the Texas map. SUPPLIES NEEDED: Texas state map Push pins/tape/adhesive putty yarn or string Depending on the size of your group, this activity may be completed as a class activity or a small group activity. If you choose to do this activity in small groups, please provide one set of supplies for each group. ASK THE CHILDREN: 1. Who can show us where our town is located? 2. Can someone show us where Waxahachie is? 3. Let s see how many miles it is from our town to Waxahachie. Be prepared with how far and how long it takes to drive to these different cities. Teachers, you can attach the yarn or string from your town to the different cities. For older children, allow a child to attach the yarn length to the map. 2 Lesson 5 REMEDY CHURCH

Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19 MISSIONS STORY Yesterday we talked about church planting. Can someone remind us what that means? Today our story is about someone who planted a church in the country. Let s watch this short video so you can see the people and places in our story today. (Play the DVD: The DVD introduces the Texas Missions story for the day. It is not intended to tell the full story) The people in our story today share God s love with people in their community through a lot of different community events. As I am telling the story, listen for at least three different things they do to share Jesus with people. Pastor Aaron Clayton and his wife Charity live in Waxahachie where they planted a church about twoand-a-half years ago. Pastor Clayton was working with his wife at a church in Dallas when their pastor noticed that a lot of people were coming to the church from Waxahachie. Another man named Richard Cody worked with the Baptist association near Waxahachie and found out that city could use a new church. So Pastor Clayton and his wife, along with about 12 others from their church in Dallas (you could call them the church planting team), started a church in the countryside near Waxahachie and called it Remedy Church. Since the church started in September 2011, they have almost 80 people attend. Remedy s missions pastor, Bryan Wooten, and his wife Gina were missionaries with the International Mission Board for over four years in Southeast Asia before moving to Waxahachie. The Wootens help lead Remedy Church members to share the gospel with their community. (In this next paragraph, slow down and use your voice to emphasize the different events.) One way the Wootens reach out to their city is through special community events such as parades, arts and crafts festivals, library carnivals, farmers markets and Chick-Fil-A family nights. The church even bought two bounce houses to use when they put on community events. Lots of times families with children see the fun bounce houses and while they are enjoying the community events, members and pastors from Remedy Church share God s love with them and invite them to be a part of Remedy Church. In addition to serving in as many community events as possible, Remedy Church and staff members make it a point to share Jesus with their neighbors. Pastor Clayton and his wife invited their next-door neighbors to Remedy Church. The husband was already a Christian but needed to learn more about following Jesus every day in his life. The wife saw how much her husband was growing up as a Christian and several months later, she received Christ as her Savior too! She was baptized at Remedy Church and now they help other members share Jesus with their community. Right now Remedy Church does not have its own building. They meet at the Texas Baptist Home for Children where they also help with the different ministries of the Baptist Home by sharing their bounce houses and helping to buy toys for the children at Christmas. 3 Lesson 5 REMEDY CHURCH

Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19 MISSIONS ACTIVITY OBJECTIVE: 1. To learn how people share Jesus through community events 2. To pray for Remedy Church staff and members 3. To review/learn the verse of the week, Matthew 28:19 Divide the group into at least two groups. You can have more groups depending on the number of students you have. Make sure to have at least one adult with each group. In each group, ask the students to recall all the different ways Remedy Church used to share Jesus with their community. Make a list of all the answers. Write their answers individually on small slips of paper and put them into a balloon. Blow up each balloon and tie it off and collect them in a bucket or grocery sack. If children can help blow up or tie off the balloons, let them do so. Encourage them to think of additional community activities which could be used in your community. For example, if your town has an annual fair or parade, they might think of doing face painting at the event. Other examples are community cleanup days, doing yard work for elderly neighbors, taking gifts to a children s home or nursing home, etc. As the students name events - either from the story or new ones they think of - talk about how those events could specifically be used to share God s love. Some examples of answers would be to invite people to your church when they participate in the event, have conversations with the people about Jesus and share their personal testimonies of following Jesus, asking people if you can pray for them, etc. Allow for creativity and detail in students answers. When you have blown up all the balloons with items from your list, pass your balloons along to one of the other groups. Each group ends up with a different set of balloons than what it started with. SUPPLIES NEEDED: DVD Player and DVD or device to play downloaded video of Remedy Church (sbtexas.com/missions4kids) Small-to-medium sized balloons - enough for at least one per child - and then about 10-30 extras to use for the Bible verse Slips of paper small enough to fit into an uninflated balloon Something to write with Something to collect about a dozen inflated balloons such as a grocery bag or bucket (one per group) Something to pop balloons with Printed Sign: Memory Verse: Matthew 28:19 Picture of bounce house Allow children to take turns popping the balloons one by one.they can either sit on them to pop them, stomp on them, or when supervised by an adult, pop the balloon with a pin of some sort. If your group can do the following without disrupting a class nearby, you could even give each child a balloon and let all pop balloons at once. Have each child find the slip of paper that was in the balloon and either read it aloud or hand it to the group leader to read. The small group can decide if that is something they already had on their list or if it is something new. Let them discuss the events they think they might want to help with someday. CONTINUED ON FOLLOWING PAGE... 4 Lesson 5 REMEDY CHURCH

Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19 MISSIONS ACTIVITY ACTIVITY (CONTINUED) Gather all the slips of paper and balloon pieces together in one bag or bucket as you call the whole group back together. Thank the students for their creativity in thinking of ways to share Jesus with their community. Lead the children in prayer or call on several children who don t mind leading in prayer. Pray for Pastor Aaron Clayton and his wife Charity Pray for the missions pastor Bryan Wooten and his wife Gina Pray for your own pastor and his family Pray for each student in the room to remember to share Jesus with his or her community Review Matthew 28:19 one final time this week. If you would like to continue with the balloon theme, you can write each word on an inflated balloon and hit them out into the group and have the students arrange the balloons in order. Or you can have a pre-made set of balloons with the words to the verse inside the balloons (divide the verse up into as many sections as you feel are appropriate for your age group). Have the children review the poster of the verse and/or use their Bibles to look up the verse and then put the verse in order and say it together after they pop the balloons. Suggest to the children that whenever they see a bounce house or parade, they should think about our friends in Waxahachie who minister to their community in so many different ways and be reminded they can share Jesus with their communities in a variety of ways. A FAMILY CHALLENGE The following page is an optional activity to engage families. The VBS director or children s minister can send this activity to families through email, Facebook, or the church s website. 4 Lesson 5 REMEDY CHURCH

Son and of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 28:19 MISSION TEXAS FAMILY CHALLENGE Dear Parents, Our missions track today was about a group of people in Waxahachie. Pastor Aaron Clayton and his wife started a church there about two-and-a-half years ago and the name of the church is Remedy Church. They try to reach out to their city through lots of community events. Some events they sponsor to meet and minister to their community include parades, arts and crafts festivals, library carnivals, farmers markets and Chick-Fil-A family nights. The church even bought two bounce houses they use when they put on community events. Lots of times families with children see the fun bounce houses and while they are enjoying the community events, members and pastors from Remedy Church share God s love with them and invite them to be a part of Remedy Church. Another way the staff and members of Remedy Church try to minister to their community is by meeting their neighbors and getting to know about their families and their needs. Remedy Church does not have its own church building so they meet in the Texas Baptist Home for Children in Waxahachie. They try to help at the children s home when they can and even help buy toys for the children. You can watch a short video of the folks from Waxahachie at work by visiting sbtexas.com/missions4kids and click the lesson for day five. Today in our missions stop, we tried to think of different ways in our own community we could share the love of Jesus with our neighbors. Here are some things you can try this month to help your children continue to think of ways to minister to people in your community: 1. Think of an upcoming event in your community that your family might enjoy attending together. Find a way to participate that will allow you to tell people you are helping to show God s love. Maybe your children can make Bible verse cards to hand out with information about your church or they can help you strike up conversations with other families about God s love for us. 2. When you see bounce houses or parades, you can make a point to remind your children about the people at Remedy Church who use creative ways to meet people and share God s love. Stop and lead your family in a prayer of thanks for Remedy Church and ask the Lord for opportunities to share the gospel story with others. 3. Work together as a family to see how many of your neighbors you know. Make a plan to meet some neighbors you don t know. Take them a homemade treat and invite them to join you at church one Sunday and share your testimony with them. If you would like to talk more with someone about your relationship with Christ, please feel free to reference your child s mission tracks this week and talk to one of your child s teachers or church staff members. Made possible through your Cooperative Program giving
