Music - Louis Armstrong Words - Tom Andrews We gather in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen Call to Worship Come, let us worship the Lord our God. We come to worship, but at times it is hard to see beyond our own brokenness. Give God all of your fears, pain and loss. God is good and loves all people. Come, Lord Jesus, take our sin. Time of silence God has you in the grip of grace and loves you even when you believe yourself to be unlovable. Hear this word you are loved, you are forgiven. Hallelujah! Thanks be to God! The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 2
Prayer of the Day God of all grace, you revealed your deep love for us by the works of your Son who brought faith and life to all people. Transform us by the Spirit of his love that we may find our life together in him, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen Lesson Job 1:1, 13-19 There was once a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job. That man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. One day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the eldest brother s house, a messenger came to Job and said, The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were feeding beside them, and the Sabeans fell on them and carried them off, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another came and said, The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another came and said, The Chaldeans formed three columns, made a raid on the camels and carried them off, and killed the servants with the edge of the sword; I alone have escaped to tell you. While he was still speaking, another came and said, Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother s house, and suddenly a great wind came across the desert, struck the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young people, and they are dead; I alone have escaped to tell you. Anthem Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing Psalm 138:7-8 I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord. Do not, O Lord, withhold your mercy from me; let your steadfast love, and your faithfulness keep me safe forever. For evils have encompassed me without number; my iniquities have overtaken me, until I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails me. But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you; may those who love your salvation say continually, Great is the Lord! Anthem Sermonette 3
Holy Gospel John 8:2-11 (spoken) Glory to you, O Lord. Early in the morning Jesus came again to the temple. All the people came to him and he sat down and began to teach them. The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery; and making her stand before all of them, they said to him, Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery. Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say? They said this to test him, so that they might have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her. And once again he bent down and wrote on the ground. When they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the elders; and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus straightened up and said to her, Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you? She said, No one, sir. And Jesus said, Neither do I condemn you. Go your way, and from now on do not sin again. (spoken) Praise to you, O Christ. Sacrament of Holy Baptism 10:30 Sawyer David Juvonen Son of Karla and Erik Juvonen Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
