THE FREE ACADEMY OF FOUNDATIONS 325 NORTH POLK MOSCOW, IDAHO

...in this irregular manner I had looked into a great many books which were not commonly known at the Universities, where they seldom read any books but what are put into their hands by their tutors; so that when I came to Oxford, Dr. Adams, now Master of Pembroke College, told me, I was the best qualified for the University that he had ever known come there. Samuel Johnson The Free Academy of Foundations has been established to meet a basic need in higher education. True education cannot exist without an acquaintance with some of the great books of history. All too often, students come to know historical figures through a filter of textbooks. Whether in philosophy, theology, or history, the student is kept away from the primary sources. The thoughts of those who have gone before are reduced to pablum (edited, annotated, and abridged). We then wonder at the student s loss of appetite. The Free Academy is dedicated to enhancing one's liberal arts education by the reading of great books. The Academy believes that it is possible to receive a good education without being submerged in an educational bureaucracy. We only provide a list for a student s reading. The assigned books are by no means comprehensive. We do, however, believe them to be representative. A student who reads through these lists will find his understanding greatly broadened. Even better, he will find that his education is not second hand. Evan Wilson 208-882-8679 Email:EWILSON@turbonet.com This list and concept is NOT copyright and we encourage the duplication of this f lyer for any person interested.
