Pastor Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. Our help is in the name of the Lord. Pastor I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Your infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ.

ALL O most merciful God, who hast given Thine only-begotten Son to die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Thy Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of Thee and of Thy will and true obedience to Thy Word, to the end that by Thy grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Pastor Almighty God, our heavenly Father, has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die for us and for His sake forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in His name He gives power to become the sons of God and has promised them His Holy Spirit. He who believes and is baptized shall be saved. Grant this, Lord, unto us all. P: May You be a Strong Rock: C: A House of Defense to save me. P: In You, O Lord, do I put my trust: C: Let me never be ashamed. THE GLORIA PATRI Latin for Glory to the Father THE SALUTATION (Greeting) PASTOR The Lord be with you.

THE COLLECT FOR THE DAY The main thoughts for the day are collected together in this prayer. PASTOR Let us pray. THE BIBLE READINGS God speaks to us. The Old Testament Bible Reading: Jeremiah 23:1-13 "Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of My pasture!" says the LORD. 2 Therefore thus says the LORD God of Israel against the shepherds who feed My people: "You have scattered My flock, driven them away, and not attended to them. Behold, I will attend to you for the evil of your doings," says the LORD. 3 "But I will gather the remnant of My flock out of all countries where I have driven them, and bring them back to their folds; and they shall be fruitful and increase. 4 "I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them; and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, nor shall they be lacking," says the LORD. 5 "Behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. 6 In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. 7 "Therefore, behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "that they shall no longer say, 'As the LORD lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt,' 8 "but, 'As the LORD lives who brought up and led the descendants of the house of Israel from the north country and from all the countries where I had driven them.' And they shall dwell in their own land." 9 My heart within me is broken Because of the prophets; All my bones shake. I am like a drunken man, And like a man whom wine has overcome, Because of the LORD, And because of His holy words. 10 For the land is full of adulterers; For because of a curse the land mourns. The pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up. Their course of life is evil, And their might is not right. 11 "For both prophet and priest are profane; Yes, in My house I have found their wickedness," says the LORD. 12 "Therefore their way shall be to them Like slippery ways; In the darkness they shall be driven on And fall in them; For I will bring disaster on them, The year of their punishment," says the LORD. 13 "And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria: They prophesied by Baal And caused My people Israel to err. PASTOR Here ends the Old Testament Bible Reading. We continue with the responsive reading of: THE GRADUAL The Gradual is a Bridge of praise that links the Old Testament with the New Testament. P: I will bless the Lord at all times: C: His praise shall be in my mouth continually. P: My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: C: The humble shall hear of it and be glad. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! P: Sing out loud to God, our Strength: C: Make joyful music to the God of Jacob. Hallelujah! PASTOR The New Testament Bible Reading comes from Hebrews chapter 12, beginning there in the 1 st verse. The New Testament Bible Reading Hebrews 12:1-13 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. 4 You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. 5 And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: "My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him; 6 For whom the LORD loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives." 7 If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? 8 But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid

them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? 10 For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. 11 Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. 12 Therefore strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed. PASTOR: Here ends the New Testament Bible Reading. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; The forgiveness of sins; The resurrection of the body; And the life everlasting. Amen. Congregation sings Hymn 30 THE SERMON Luke 12:49-53 "I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! 50 "But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am till it is accomplished! 51 "Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather division. 52 "For from now on five in one house will be divided: three against two, and two against three. 53 "Father will be divided against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law." Theme: BAPTISM BY FIRE I. What that meant for Jesus (49-50) II. What that means for us (51-53) THE OFFERTORY In this prayer we OFFER God our hearts, asking Him for that best of all gifts, the Holy Spirit. Congregation stands for: THE APOSTLES CREED We boldly confess what we believe. (Hymnal, page 12) I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

THE OFFERING OF THANKFUL HEARTS In tangible evidence of our gratitude, we offer the Lord the gift of our money, remembering that He has first given to us that we might have to give to Him. While the ushers present our offerings at the Lord s Altar, we stand and sing the offering hymn 788:1: Lord, You love the cheerful giver Who with open heart and hand Blesses freely, as a river that refreshes all the land. Grant us, then, the grace of giving with a spirit large and true. That our life and all our living we may consecrate to You. PRAYERS - (Pastor) THE LORD S PRAYER - (All) Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever, Amen. Congregation sings Hymn 513 Congregation stands for: PASTOR: THE BENEDICTION The blessing given by God for the blessing of His people (Numbers 6:24-26). The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The LORD lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. The Closing Hymn 52 *** SILENT PRAYER *** A n n o u n c e m e n t s If the LORD wills, we will do this or that. James 4:15 WELCOME EVERYONE! Especially any visitors who may be with us. WEEKLY MEMORY VERSE Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, The people He chose for His inheritance. Psalm 33:12

The Old Testament Bible Reading for 13 th Sunday after Pentecost Jeremiah 23:1-13 These verses contain strong warnings against those who teach and preach false doctrine. The comforting promise is that, Led by Jesus, here called The LORD our Righteousness God will provide for His people true teaching shepherds. Let us keep on being watchful for false teachers so that by God s grace, we may have nothing to do with them. We read "Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of My pasture!" says the LORD. 7 "Therefore, behold, the days are coming," says the LORD, "that they shall no longer say, 'As the LORD lives who brought up the children of Israel from the land of Egypt,' 8 "but, 'As the LORD lives who brought up and led the descendants of the house of Israel from the north country and from all the countries where I had driven them.' THE GRADUAL P: I will bless the Lord at all times: C: His praise shall be in my mouth continually. P: My soul shall make her boast in the Lord: C: The humble shall hear of it and be glad. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! The New Testament Bible Reading Hebrews 12:1-13 The examples of faith by the believers of the Old Testament, here called the great cloud of witnesses should encourage us to persevere in our lives as Christians. By faith we continually look to Jesus, who promises strength and help in time of need. We read Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 9 Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect.
