Dr. John Stephenson Prelude: I Know That My Redeemer Liveth Opening Hymn #203 Jesus Christ is Risen Today God Invites us into His Presence eluia! Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. eluia! May his grace and peace be with you. May he fill our hearts with joy. Collect for Purity: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hidden. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Gloria The Collect : Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly king, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Lord of life and power, through the mighty resurrection of your Son, you have overcome the old order of sin and death and have made all things new in him. May we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, reign with him in glory, who with you and the Holy Spirit is alive, one God, now and for ever.

God Speaks to Us please be seated First Reading: Acts 10:34-43 (8:00am & 11:00am services only) Peter is breaking Jewish law by visiting Cornelius, a Gentile officer in the Roman army of occupation but a genuine seeker of God. Peter tells Cornelius and all present about the resurrection. This bold act shows that Peter now realizes that the Messiah has come for all peoples from all nations. Psalm 118:1-2, 14-24 please remain seated Cantor: Kara Prost Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 (all services) Paul has heard that some at Corinth deny the physical resurrection of the body, claiming that only the spirit matters. Here Paul begins a long defence of God s promise of genuine physical resurrection by appealing first to the reality of the Risen Christ. Gradual Hymn #228 eluia! O Sons and Daughters (vv.1-4 & 9) The Holy Gospel: Mark 16:1-8 When sundown came on the day of crucifixion, the Sabbath had begun: there had been no time to prepare Jesus body appropriately before burial. In great grief, women close to Jesus now come hoping somehow still to prepare His body properly. Gospeller Deacon Deacon The Lord be with you And also with you The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. eluia! The Gospel of Christ. eluia! Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. eluia! Sermon Musical Offering eluia Sung by: Kara Prost The Nicene Creed Please stand Let us confess our faith, as we say, We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is

seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen The Prayers of the People Response: Hear us, Lord of glory! Confession & Absolution Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; he welcomes sinners and invites them to his table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God s forgiveness. Silence is kept. The Peace Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. We Respond with Thanksgiving The Preparation of the Gifts The Offertory Hymn #215 Come, Ye Faithful, Raise the Strain The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth; we give you thanks and praise for the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the true Paschal Lamb who has taken away the sin of the world. By his death he destroyed death, and by his rising to life again he has won eternal life. Therefore, joining our voices with the whole company of heaven, we sing our joyful hymn of praise to proclaim the glory of your name.

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest. continues)... We give thanks to you, Lord our God.... (the prayer continues) Therefore, Father, according to his command, we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory; and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving... (the prayer in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord's Prayer And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Lord, we died with you on the cross. Now we are raised to new life. We were buried in your tomb. Now we share in your resurrection. Live in us, that we may live in you. Lamb of God O Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God that takes away the sin of the world: grant us peace. Rehearsal 7:30 pm Saturday Confirmation Class East Hall 10:00 am A Word from John: BC:AD Even in our system of time most of our world including millions of non-christians still tacitly acknowledge the power of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We understand history as that which happened before Jesus and that which happened after. At our best, we Christians are not arrogant about our faith but we do believe that in the death and resurrection of Jesus we have the hinge moment of all human history. We believe what Oscar Cullman called the scandal of the cross : in the death of this Jewish carpenter in a remote Roman province 2,000 years all history was changed, that the way out of our sins and their consequences was provided, and in his resurrection eternal life procured for all humanity. That assertion is truly breath-taking. C. S. Lewis in his singular ability to express great truths in easy to handle terms summed it up this way: we only have two choices. Christianity is either extremely important or completely unimportant. What it cannot be, Lewis wrote, is moderately important. On one hand, Christians maintain that this man Jesus was the Son of God who died and rose from the dead and changed human reality forever in which case He is extremely important for us and this world now. On the other hand, some assert that Jesus wasn t God s Son and didn t rise from the dead. If that is true then Jesus is completely unimportant and ought to be ignored. What Lewis wanted to emphasize was that Jesus cannot be only somewhat important, worthy of only passing and occasional consideration. Either all depends on Him or

nothing depends on Him. At the core of our faith as Christians is that assertion that this man Jesus was God with us, that He indeed rose from the dead and so He is of greatest importance to our lives and the life of this world. Through Him we can know forgiveness and new life and the great hope of resurrection. In the days and weeks and months to come after this Easter day may we live as a people who have truly understood the supreme importance of the One who was and is and is to come. Happy Easter!
