Service of Divine Worship September 2, 2018 9:00AM, 10:45AM Sanctuary and Fellowship Hall We rest our hearts in God s presence as we prepare for worship PRELUDE OUR GREAT GOD We celebrate God s presence with us and ask for his Spirit to work powerfully among us God invites us to worship him in spirit and in truth WELCOME & INVOCATION CALL TO WORSHIP PSALM 24:7-10 Leader: Lift up your heads, O gates! And be lifted up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. People: Who is this King of glory? Leader: The LORD, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle! People: Lift up your heads, O gates! And lift them up, O ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. Leader: Who is this King of glory? People: The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory! 1

We sing praises to God for who he is and for what he has done SONGS OF PRAISE O WORSHIP THE KING O worship the King all glorious above, O gratefully sing his pow r and his love; Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise. O tell of his might, O sing of his grace, whose robe is the light, whose canopy space. His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, And dark is his path on the wings of the storm. Your bountiful care what tongue can recite? It breathes in the air; it shines in the light; It streams from the hills; it descends to the plain; And sweetly distills in the dew and the rain. Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail, in you do we trust, nor find you to fail; Your mercies how tender, how firm to the end, Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend! Words by R. Grant, Based on Psalm 104; Music by J.M. Haydn; Arr. 2015 Jeff Vogan; CCLI# 152421 OUR GREAT GOD Eternal God, unchanging, mysterious and unknown; Your boundless love, unfailing, in grace and mercy shown. Bright seraphim in ceaseless flight around your glorious throne, They raise their voices day and night in praise to you alone. Chorus: Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Hallelujah! Glory be to our great God! Lord we are weak and frail, helpless in the storm. Surround us with your angels, hold us in your arms. Our cold and ruthless enemy, his pleasure is our harm. Rise up, O Lord, and he will flee before our sov reign God. Chorus Let ev ry creature in the sea and ev ry flying bird, Let ev ry mountain, ev ry field and valley of the earth, Let all the moons and all the stars in all the universe Sing praises to the living God who rules them by his Word. Chorus 2x CCLI Song #3493094; Words & Music by M. Powell & F. Ortega; 2002 Word Music, LLC, New Spring, Dejamesolo Music; CCLI License #152421 2

We acknowledge our need of forgiveness and renewal through the cleansing blood of Jesus CONFESSION OF SIN Eternal and unchanging God, we come to your throne in need of forgiveness. We confess that we often doubt the truth of your gospel. In our doubt, we easily become like waves of the sea, blown and tossed by the winds of unbelief. In our unbelief, we grow hostile toward you and toward others. Forgive us. By the power of your Spirit, help our unbelief. By your grace, let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts. Transform our lives into powerful testimonies of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. We ask these things in the glorious name of Christ. Amen. God reminds us of his promise of forgiveness in Christ ASSURANCE OF PARDON ISAIAH 53:4-6 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. We enjoy and extend the peace of the gospel to one another GIVING OF THE PEACE Leader: Because we have been healed by Christ s wounds, we now have peace with God and peace with one another. May the peace of Christ be with you! People: And also with you! We give thanks to God and bring our needs to him CONGREGATIONAL PRAYER You can join us in praying for our community and world this morning; the Flock Notes are on page 9 in your worship guide. If you would like to submit a prayer request, fill out the prayer request card and place it in the offering plate. If you would like someone to pray with you after the service, men and women from our leadership will be available in the front. 3

As recipients of his grace, we give back to God a portion of what is already his PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS We want to be a generous community. In response to the grace we ve received, we seek to give cheerfully, diligently, proportionately, and sacrificially (2 Cor 8:1-15). Many of our people give online (mcleanpres.org); you can also place your gift in the offering plate. Read more about how we care for each other, as well as our local & global missions outreach in the Flock Notes on page 9. Please also fill out the Keeping Connected pad and pass it down your row and back. We ready our hearts to receive the preaching of God s word SONG OF PREPARATION AGNUS DEI Alleluia, alleluia for the Lord God Almighty reigns! Alleluia, alleluia for the Lord God Almighty reigns! Alleluia, holy, holy are you, Lord God Almighty. Worthy is the Lamb, worthy is the Lamb. You are holy, holy are you, Lord God Almighty. Worthy is the Lamb, worthy is the Lamb. Amen. People: Thanks be to God! God speaks to us through the preaching of his word SERMON HUNGRY FOR MORE 7. Feasting 4

God gives us a visible sign to confirm his covenant promise in Christ THE LORD S SUPPER During the sacrament of the Lord s Supper, true believers who repent of their sins and desire to live as followers of Christ, who revealed himself to be fully God and man in one person, are invited to partake. Children who have not been received by the Session into communing membership after a public confession of faith should refrain even though they may have personally received the Savior, because of the responsibility of the recipient to discern the Lord s body. PRAYER OF FAITH FOR THOSE PARTAKING OF THE SACRAMENT Gracious Lord, I do not presume to come to this your Table trusting in my own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. In my own righteousness I am not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your Table. But, by your grace, grant that I may draw near to you by faith; eat and drink in remembrance that you died for me. And grant that I may feed on you in my inner being by faith with great thanksgiving. Lord, please open the eyes of my heart that I may know the hope of your calling, the riches of the glory of my inheritance and the surpassing greatness of your power toward me in Jesus Christ. Amen. Those who do not have a personal saving relationship with Jesus Christ are asked to refrain from partaking and are urged to use this time to meditate on one of the following prayers: PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR TRUTH Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen. PRAYER OF BELIEF Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen. PRAYER FOR CHILDREN OBSERVING COMMUNION Lord Jesus, I do not understand everything about this communion service. But I know that it is good. Jesus, when I feel hungry for the bread, please help me to hunger for you instead. When I wish I could taste the sweetness of the juice, please help me instead to think of the sweetness of your love. Lord Jesus, thank you that your broken body and your blood paid for my sin. I love you Lord. Amen. 5

We remember Christ s death, celebrate his resurrection, enjoy his presence, and anticipate his return SERVING OF THE BREAD AND THE CUP 1 Corinthians 11:23-26: For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me. In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. As soon as you receive the elements you may eat the bread and drink the cup in remembrance of Christ who died for you. As recipients of God s grace, we give to help those in need DEACONS OFFERING As we ve received a tangible expression of God s love and kindness for us, we offer a tangible expression of care and concern for those in need within our flock and community. Please designate your gift by writing Deacons Offering on your check or envelope. 6

We respond to God s word through song SONG OF SENDING JESUS, THANK YOU The myst ry of the cross I cannot comprehend, the agonies of Calvary. You the perfect Holy One, crushed your Son, Who drank the bitter cup reserved for me. Chorus: Your blood has washed away my sin, Jesus, thank you. The Father s wrath completely satisfied, Jesus, thank you. Once your enemy, now seated at your table, Jesus, thank you. By your perfect sacrifice I ve been brought near. Your enemy you ve made your friend. Pouring out the riches of your glorious grace, Your mercy and your kindness know no end. Chorus Bridge: Lover of my soul, I want to live for you. (4x) Chorus Once your enemy, now seated at your table, Jesus, thank you. CCLI Song #4475341; Words and music by P. Sczebel; 2003 Integrity s Hosanna! Music; Sovereign Grace Worship; CCLI# 152421 God sends us out with his blessing BENEDICTION 2 CORINTHIANS 13:14 Leader: May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. People: Amen. Thanks be to God! Alleluia! We go out with joy and purpose in the Lord POSTLUDE 7
