MERCY S MARY S CLUB Serving others through the eyes of our Blessed Mother is the aspiration of Our Lady of Mercy School s Mary s Club members. The club was started by the Salesian Sisters during the 1970s as an extracurricular for young ladies to guide them in loving our Blessed Mother more deeply. At the time, the boys had a similar club called the Dominic Savio Club, which encouraged young men to consider entering religious life. Mary s Club eventually disappeared from campus life but thanks to the efforts of the OLOM Early Childhood Center s religion teacher, Ms. Sherri Montagnino and her amazing team of volunteers (OLOM School Teachers Ms. Delilah Tibbetts, Ms. Tonya DeSoto, and Ms. Andrea Hulse), Mary s Club livened up the campus once again nearly six years ago, welcoming girls in grades second through eighth to participate. Borrowing from the school s motto, Prayer, Knowledge, and Service, Mary s Club incorporates those same aspects into their meetings. The structure of the monthly meetings consists of an opening prayer; followed by a lesson about a special community organization s needs, the life of Mary, lessons taught by religious leaders, just to name a few examples; then the girls are tasked with a project from making scarves for the elderly, to learning about sewing and making clothes from cotton and wool from sheep the way Mary would have done, to throwing a Christmas party for children in need. One of the most memorable and exciting service projects each year occurs during 40 Days for Life. Members of Mary s Club pray a group rosary inside the church, then host a baby shower for expectant mothers. The gifts that are collected by the group are donated to Catholic Charities Sanctuary for Life. Longtime Mary s Club member, Gabrielle Montagnino (8th grade) describes the goal of the club as a way to grow closer to Jesus through Mary. When the club was reestablished on campus six years ago, it started with twenty members. Today the club has grown to over seventy members. With the help of her volunteer team, Montagnino also offers a Mary s Club summer camp each year. Activities include daily Mass, a tour of the church, fun crafts, guest speakers, and daily lessons. For more information about Mary s Club, contact Ms. Sherri Montagnino, smontagnino@olomschool.org. Our Lady of Mercy, Pray for us! BATON ROUGE, LA 3

SAINT OF THE WEEK Blessed Junipero Serra (1713-1784) FEAST DAY: July 1 Born on Spain s island of Mallorca, Serra entered the Franciscan Order, taking the name of St. Francis childlike companion, Brother Juniper. He up a successful teaching career to follow the yearning that had begun years before when he heard about the missionary work of St. Francis Solanus in South America. Junipero s desire was to convert native peoples in the New World. Arriving by ship at Vera Cruz, Mexico, he and a companion walked the 250 miles to Mexico City. On the way Junipero s left leg became infected by an insect bite and would remain a cross sometimes life-threatening for the rest of his life. For 18 years he worked in central Mexico and in the Baja Peninsula. He became president of the missions there. The outcome of his missionary work was substantially what Junipero sought: the famous Regulation protecting the Indians and the missions. It was the basis for the first significant legislation in California, a Bill of Rights for Native Americans. Because the Native Americans were living a nonhuman life from the Spanish point of view, the friars were made their legal guardians. The Native Americans were kept at the mission after Baptism. Junipero s missionary life was a long battle with cold and hunger, with unsympathetic military commanders and even with danger of death from non-christian native peoples. Through it all his unquenchable zeal was fed by prayer each night, often from midnight till dawn. He baptized over 6,000 people and confirmed 5,000. He brought the Native Americans not only the gift of faith but also a decent standard of living. Pope Francis will canonize Serra during his pilgrimage to the United States on September 23, 2015. 8 OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH
