Concordia Lutheran "The wind blows where it wills..." John 3:8 Church October 2017 N W 3705 Harwood Rd., Bedford, TX 76021 Sunday School: 10:00 a.m. Pastor: Rev Mark Lasch Office Phone: 817-283-3560 Sunday 9:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m. www.concordialutheran.org Concordia Pt. 3 The first words I ever spoke to the good people of Concordia were something like this: I know you have given much thought and prayer to this call process, but if you don t mind, I d like to pray for my part in it Dear God, I praise you for the good work you are doing in the people of Concordia. If it is your will that I should serve them as their pastor, please make me bold to speak with words that come from you. If it is not your will that I should serve them, then may you make me a bumbling idiot, that they would not waste a single thought upon me. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. On October 6, 2005 I received word that it was a unanimous decision on the part of the call committee to bring my name before the voter s assembly to receive the call to serve as Concordia s third pastor. This came as a little bit of a surprise, since I wasn t really sure which way the conversation had gone when I last spoke to them. In later years I learned that it was only by an act of God that I even had opportunity to speak to the call committee. They intended to narrow the list of candidates down to three men who could serve as the next pastor. I was number four. But a mix-up between the chairman of the congregation and the head of the Board of Lay Ministry caused the chairman to reach out to me before they clarified that I hadn t made the cut. Plan B they made 4 phone calls, and what impressed them most was that of all of the pastors who had been contacted, I was the only one who prayed sad. I won t ever forget the circumstances of my call to Concordia. Through ups and downs successes and mistakes I continue to see God s hand guiding and leading us to the places He wants us to go. There are fundamental places where God has promised to be. He has promised to hear our prayers when they are lifted up in the name of Jesus. He has promised to be present, especially in the Sacraments of the Lord s Supper and Holy Baptism, and where two or three are gathered in His name. He has promised that it is He, who by the power of the Holy Spirit, calls, gathers, and equips His church on earth for the glory of God and the good of all who believe. And it is He who is causing you to read this now. There is a story behind your calling too. For such a time as this, at a pivotal point in our history together God has made you a part to the community of believers at Concordia. Have you asked yourself why? A few years ago I remember talking with Roni and Murry Scheibe and mentioning to them that being the pastor to Concordia is a little like being the pastor to the Island of the Misfit Toys. To many that might seem like a harsh criticism, but it is really quite the opposite. In truth it is an endearment that indicates just how much I love being your pastor. Concordia is a safe place to bring your broken springs and worn fur and watch them be restored and made whole in the love of Jesus. We really are misfits! Misfits because the love Jesus gives us doesn t easily fit into the world. The love that Jesus has for us crashes into the darkness with a light that is about as subtle as a sledge hammer crashing through fine china. His love is the light which has navigated us for 50 years, still does today, and will throughout our future. Someday a fourth pastor will sit behind this desk and muse about this crazy flock over which God has given him charge. As he remembers John, and Roger, and Mark, I pray that he smiles then as I do now, shakes his head a little, and says, With sheep like these Thanks for letting me be a part of it. Happy 50 th anniversary! The best is yet to come. To God alone be the glory! E S

You are cordially invited to attend the 50th Anniversary Golden Jubilee Concordia Lutheran Church 3705 Harwood Road, Bedford, Texas 76021 817-283-3560 Sunday October 22, 2017 service at 10:30 a.m. Lunch to follow.

- Update from the Future Needs Committee. The FNC has received a multitude of responses to our request for qualifications from various local architect firms. We will be busy scrutinizing each response and will eliminate all but a top two or three based on the same criteria. There will be a lot more updated information for you once this process is discussed at our next meeting on Thursday, October 5. The FNC has contracted Sempco Surveying, Inc. out of Fort Worth to complete a Boundary Survey, Topographic Survey, Utilities Survey, Tree Survey, Adjoining Buildings, Easements and Building Lines. Work on these surveys has already begun. Let s make some NOISE!!!! Start saving all of your spare change now and see how much noise you can make as you pour it, throw it and shake it into the Noisy Offering Can Noisy offering will take place the last Sunday of each month and will occur at the conclusion of each Service. The funds collected each month will be used towards specified ministries or activities. October 29 Noisy Offering will go towards sending some of Concordia s Children s Ministry Leaders to the Children s Pastors Conference in Orlando, Florida. From the Board of Christian Education... Galatians 4:22, 23 the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, self-control That is what Miss Heather s Little Lambs will be going through on Sundays the fruit of the Spirit great lessons for all! Rally Day came and went with lots of excitement! (I know the kids loved it when Pastor announced them one by one as they entered the Fellowship Hall!) Concordia Cash will be sold in the narthex between church services. We always appreciate your support as we continue to encourage the children to live godly lives and abide by the Knight s Code Speak Truth, Right Wrong, Live Pure, and Serve the King. Please stop by the bakers rack in the fellowship hall and feel free to look and read about Concordia s history. In honor of Concordia s 50th anniversary we will be printing some vintage Church Mouse cartoons. This month s Church Mouse originally appeared in the October 1997 edition of Concordia s Windsock newsletter. Child Care and a special kid friendly lunch for children 10 and under will be provided for the luncheon portion of the celebration. Please look for a child care sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the hallway. It is important for parents to sign their children up so we may get an accurate count for food.
