October 14, 2018 XXVIII Sunday in Ordinary Time Canonization of Pope Paul VI and Archbishop Oscar Romero Oct 14, 2018 (Excerpts from the website Cruxnow.com... article by Ines St Martin) P ope Francis has chosen the date for the ceremony that will see the Catholic Church officially recognize the sainthood of Pope Paul VI and Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, who was martyred as he was celebrating Mass: They will be canonized on Sunday Oct. 14, 2018. The October ceremony, to be celebrated Pope by Francis, will be in Rome, during the Synod of Bishops on the youth that will take place from October 3 to 28, 2018. The sainthood causes of four other people - two Italian priests and two women founders of religious orders, one German and one Spanish, were also approved. Pope Paul VI, a pope of dialogue, was born Giovanni Battista Enrico Antonio Maria Montini Sept. 26 1897. Pope Paul VI led the Catholic Church from 1963 until his death on August 6, 1978. Succeeding John XXIII, Paul VI continued the Second Vatican Council - which he closed 1965 - implementing its numerous reforms. He wanted a Church that was in dialogue with the modern world. He treated the theme of dialogue at great length in his encyclical Ecclesiam Suam. In it, he wrote he felt a vocation to dialogue between the Church and the world. Faced with the issue of whether to change the Church s longstanding opposition to artificial birth control, Paul VI penned his landmark encyclical Humanae Vitae in 1968, delivering a strong no to change and reaffirming the Church s teaching on contraception. Paul VI governed the Church in the turbulent post-conciliar phase. In the words of Pope Francis, he was a man who knew how to witness, in difficult years, to the faith in Jesus Christ. In Evangelii Nuntiandi, (1975) Paul VI wrote that the Church itself has a constant need of being evangelized, and that people today listen more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if they do listen to teachers, it is because they are witnesses. The world calls for, and expects from us, simplicity of life, the spirit of prayer, charity towards all, especially towards the lowly and the poor, obedience and humility, detachment and self-sacrifice. Without this mark of holiness, our word will have difficulty in touching the heart of modern man. It risks being vain and sterile, Paul wrote. Paul will become the third pope that Pope Francis has made a saint since his election five years ago. The others are John XXIII, who died in 1963, and John Paul II, who died in 2005. Both were canonized together in 2014. Oscar Romero, who will become the first Salvadoran saint, was born on August 15, 1917. He was gunned down during Mass in a hospital chapel March 24, 1980. He was shot through the heart by gunmen linked to a right-wing death squad while celebrating Mass, after saying, one must not love oneself so much as to avoid getting involved in the risks of life that history demands of us, and those who fend off danger will lose their lives. Romero was outspoken against military oppression during his country s bloody civil war in the 1980. His death is considered by the Catholic Church to have been in odium fidei, meaning in hatred of the faith. Romero was beatified in San Salvador on May 23, 2015, in a ceremony that drew an estimated 250,000 people, believed to have been the largest religious gathering ever held in Central America. May all your works thank you, O Lord, and all your Holy ones bless you. They shall speak of the glory of your reign, and declare your mighty deeds. Ps. 144 PRAYER OF ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL ope Francis has asked all Catholics to pray the Rosary daily, asking P Mary and St. Michael the Archangel to intercede for the protection of the Church in a moment of spiritual turbulence. We invite you to pray the Rosary daily and end the Rosary with recitation of the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel, composed by Pope Leo XII: S aint Michael the Archangel defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. R. Amen. 3

October 14, 2018 S U N D A Y M A S S XXVIII Sunday in Ordinary Time Mass Readings First Reading Wisdom 7.7-11 I accounted wealth as nothing in comparison to wisdom. Responsorial Psalm 90 R. Fill us with your love, O lord, that we may rejoice and be glad. Second Reading Hebrews 4.12-13 The word of God can judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Gospel Mark 10.17-30 Go, sell what you own; then follow me. T Mass Reflection With persecutions, and eternal life in the age to come. - Mark 10, 30 oday in Rome, Pope Francis will canonize Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador, in addition to Pope Paul VI Selected as archbishop of San Salvador in 1977, Romero served during a time of intense political turbulence and religious persecution. Through his homilies, radio sermons, and newspaper articles, Romero became the voice of his country s conscience. Constantly referring to the message of the gospel, he condemned the violence and corruption that plagued his country. Countless threats against his life didn t deter Romero. In one homily, he said, You can tell the people that if they succeed in killing me, I forgive and bless those who do it. Hopefully, they will realize they are wasting their time. A bishop will die, but the Church of God, which is the people, will never perish. On March 24, 1980, as he was saying Mass, a lone gunman stood at the door of the chapel and fired. Romero, who was standing at the altar, was shot in the heart and died on the spot. In his letter announcing Romero s canonization, Pope Francis wrote, In the beautiful land of Central America, bathed by the Pacific Ocean, the Lord granted his Church a zealous bishop who, loving God and serving brothers and sisters, became the image of Christ the Good Shepherd. In times of difficult coexistence, Archbishop Romero knew how to lead, defend and protect his flock... And at the moment of his death, while he celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of love and reconciliation, he received the grace to identify himself fully with the One who gave his life for his sheep. Oscar Romero lived out today s readings. He chose God s wisdom over the wealth and comfort of the world. He proclaimed the word of God in a way that cut people to the heart. And he gave everything to the poor of El Salvador. May his witness move all of us to answer the cry of the poor and downtrodden. St. Oscar Romero, pray for us.
