The Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church January 31, 2016 Becoming Aware No one has a right to sit down and feel helpless; there s too much to do. Dorothy Day Welcome to Binkley! Binkley Baptist Church is a community of faith on a journey that calls for questioning, humility, and conviction. As followers of Jesus, we embrace spiritual growth, mutual care, and service, assured that as we serve our neighbors, we joyfully serve God. Intentionally inclusive, we welcome people of all races, sexual orientations, and cultures, respecting diverse religious experiences within the church and beyond. We invite others to join us in our commitment to peace, justice, and care for creation. In a spirit of Christian love, we welcome you. GATHERING RINGING OF THE SANCTUS BELL Some traditions ring Sanctus Bells to call worshippers attention to the holy. CALL FOR THE OFFERING One: All: God called great prophets, and God calls us. God is generous, pouring out the gifts of grace and love and the life-giving power of the Word for all people. We respond with our renewed commitment to God s vision, and by giving our tithes and offerings to the ministries of God s church. Let us gather our gifts together and offer them to God in grace and gratitude and praise. OFFERTORY ANTHEM O Come, Thou Traveler Unknown Dale LaRue Bailey Come, O thou Traveler unknown, whom still I hold, but cannot see; my company before is gone, and I am left alone with thee. With thee all night I mean to stay, and wrestle till the break of day. I need not tell thee who I am, my misery or sin declare; thyself hast called me by my name, look on thy hands, and read it there. But who, I ask thee, who art thou? Tell me thy name, and tell me now. Yield to me now, for I am weak but confident in self-despair; speak to my heart, in blessings speak, be conquered by my instant prayer. Speak, or thou never hence shalt move, and tell me, if thy name is Love. 'Tis Love, 'tis Love! Thou diedst for me! I hear thy whisper in my heart: the morning breaks, the shadows flee. Pure universal Love thou art; thy mercies never shall remove, thy nature and thy name is Love. * DOXOLOGY Please sign with the leader or simply sing. LASST UNS ERFRUEN Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below, Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host; Creator, Christ, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! * UNISON PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING God of the prophets, we bless this offering as people who have received your gifts of grace and hope. We return to you a portion of the abundance you have given to us. We dedicate all that we give to your loving purposes: bringing in those who have been cast out; standing strong on behalf of those who are weak; speaking out with your Word of joy and justice for all people. May your loving realm increase! In Jesus name: Amen. * AN INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP Called as Partners in Christ s Service 453 BEECHER If you wish to become a member of Binkley Baptist Church today, you are invited to come forward during the hymn to be welcomed and received.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! This year the support of your congregation has helped the IFC to: Provide 19,140 nights of safe shelter for 323 men through the Community House and 14,685 nights of safe shelter to 129 women and 43 children through HomeStart Serve 85,560 hot, nutritious meals through Community Kitchen and HomeStart Distribute 15,338 bags of groceries through the Food Pantry Provide 289 residents with free health care and 72 residents with free mental health care Dispense 778 prescriptions at the free clinic Provide 796 families with holiday meals Distribute $178,266 to 723 households through our Crisis Unit to prevent homelessness Additionally, through your support, this past September the IFC opened a new men s residential facility, IFC @ SECU Community House! Without your support none of this would have been possible - thank you for contributing your time, money, and support to the IFC as we continue to expand and seek more ways to better our community for all of its members.

FoodFirst. IFC is planning to combine its Community Kitchen and Food Pantry into a single operations center. It has been designed for our current location at 110 West Main Street, Carrboro. The new FoodFirst building will enable IFC to maximize food, space, staff and volunteer resources & more effectively address issues of local hunger. IFC needs support from our committed network of congregations, parishioners and volunteers especially if you live, work, or patronize downtown Carrboro. Here s how you can help: 1. Write letters of support to the Board of Aldermen and local papers such as the Chapel Hill News and the Daily Tar Heel 2. Attend the public hearing at Carrboro Town Hall on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 to stand in favor of IFC and FoodFirst. After years of investigation and conversation, IFC sought a text amendment to Carrboro s Land Use Ordinance to allow IFC to apply to include a kitchen use in renovations of its property at 110 West Main, Carrboro. The Board of Aldermen s next public hearing regarding the text amendment is Tuesday, March 22, 2016. We need your continued advocacy and support to bring the FoodFirst vision to reality. While IFC continues an alternative site investigation in good faith, it does so understanding that continued consideration of the text amendment will not be delayed. Unless an even more suitable site is found, IFC needs its supporters at the public hearing on March 22 to demonstrate our community s support of FoodFirst to the Board of Aldermen. The text amendment does not approve proposed renovations, it simply allows IFC to apply for a conditional rezoning so that plans for 110 West Main can be considered. You can find more details at www.ifcfoodfirst.org. Please contact Allan Rosen at arosen@ifcmailbox.org for more information on how you can help. InterFaith Council (IFC) for Social Services Recognition: The Christ centered ministries (Food, Shelter, Compassionate Service during times of Crisis) of the IFC have supported our community for decades. One important part of those ministries draws many Binkley volunteers into the IFC Community Kitchen. The following members serve either lunch or dinner every 4th Wednesday: Tim Bradshaw, Ed Davis, Sherri Davis, Joy Fewel, Tom Fewel, April Kemper, Jo Lea, Lynn O'Brien (Our IFC Liaison), Susan Read, David Resnik, Sue Wallace, Billy Barnes, Caryl Price, Caryl Fulcher, Larry Nielsen, Dave Bruckenstein, Dale Osborne, Betty Raft, Marlene Dickison, Fred Schroeder. For their volunteerism we are grateful. For the work of the IFC we give thanks to God.

WAYS TO GIVE: SOUPER Bowl of Caring: The annual tradition will occur on February 7. The Souper Bowls of Caring have been taking place in houses of worship across America for over 20 years. Two large soup pots will be in the narthex on February 7. Binkley youth will soupervise the pots. Each pot will represent a participant in the Super Bowl (a football game). This year one pot will represent the Carolina Panthers while the other will represent the Denver Broncos. Congregants are encouraged to place any amount of money in the pot of the football team they hope will win the game. The best news is that the local IFC Food Pantry will receive all the money we raise. They will use the money to buy needed groceries to be distributed to hungry families in our community. Stewardship Update: Keep those cards coming in! We thank the 162 families and friends of Binkley who have pledged $601,606 towards our 2016 Asking Budget (~91% of budget goal.) We still need your help; please consider a pledge. Your support makes it possible for Binkley to minister to our congregation and the greater community.
