LET THE BIBLE SPEAK SERIES NOTHING HAS CHANGED IN HEAVEN Hebrews 12:27-29 Ronny F. Wade, Speaker Time is filled with swift transition, Naught of earth unmoved can stand Build your hopes on things eternal, Hold to God s unchanging hand. There has never been a time since the creation of man, when this admonition has been more important. Since Adam and Eve were driven from the Garden of Eden, this world has undergone many changes. We truly live in the midst of a changing world; Political upheavals Mass disrespect for law and order Changing attitudes toward moral standards (abortion, promiscuity, etc.) Ethics in business and politics Attitude toward God and religion Secularization of society Materialistic views and lifestyle The process of change, as it sweeps across the landscape of our life, is often subtle, gradual, but ever persistent. Often, hardly noticeable, little things accumulate, so that over the years, drastic differences become apparent. We often become so accustomed to change that we think it is acceptable in all areas of life. We even expect it, and think something is wrong if it doesn t occur. From time to time, however, we would all do well to remember that there is a place where things never change. Seven centuries before Christ, Isaiah cried, Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath; for the heavens shall banish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner; but my salvation shall be forever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished. (Isaiah 51:6) 1

I. God is the foundation of all that changes not. (Malachi 3:6) I am the Lord, I change not Swift to its close ebbs out life s little day Earth s joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see; Oh thou who changest not, Abide in me God is not dead only a few foolish human beings think He is. God is This solemn declaration must always be our points of beginning. A. God is still on His throne: He retains His power, majesty, and holiness. He has not been diminished to the status of man, nor should he ever be. When Jehovah passed before Moses, who was tucked away in the crevice of a rock and restrained from looking on God s face, we read: And the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed by him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children s children, unto the third and to the fourth generations. (Exodus 34:5-7) Then Moses made haste and bowed his head toward the earth and worshipped. In this world, man may deny Him, declare Him dead, mock Him, and take His name in vain, but all heaven reverberates around the presence of God. He is the all wise, all powerful, and everywhere present ruler of heaven and earth. Peter expressed His Omniscience, when he said, Lord thou knowest all things. (John 21:17) How true that still is. God affirmed his Omnipotence to Abraham when he said, I am the almighty God (Genesis 17:1) Jesus said, with God all things are possible. (Matthew 19:6) Paul stressed His Omnipresence when he said, for in him we live, and move, and have our being. (Acts 17:28) The majesty of God or His Holiness shall never change in heaven. It will always be Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God almighty which was and is and which is to come. (Revelation 4:9) 2

God is real; He changes not; He is the God of the living and God of the dead. He is the high and lofty one that inhabiteth eternity. (Isaiah 57:15) II. Sin is still an Abomination in Heaven Idolatry is an abomination Deuteronomy 7:25 Profaning the Holiness of God is an abomination Malachi 2:11 I hate every false way Psalms 119:104 Sin is a transgression of the Law 1 John 3:4 All unrighteousness is sin 1 John 5:17 Your sins have hid his face from you... Isaiah 59:2 A. Sin can never enter heaven. Today, in this world, we glorify sin; we clothe it in raiments of respectability. We try and neutralize its offensiveness. B. Examples: Fornication is a moral indiscretion Adultery is an extra-marital affair Killing unborn babies is a woman s choice to control her own body Gambling is a national pastime, a natural diversion Dancing is an art form, an expression of taste Filthy Language is a right granted by the constitution Pornography is a right granted by the first amendment Movies once condemned, are now all right if played on our VCR at home Drinking is legitimized by knowing when to say when Homosexuality in an alternate lifestyle C. The Real Truth God still hates evil. Sin is still sin in heaven s sight. Nothing has changed in heaven. 1. Even though our age is promiscuous and tolerant, adultery is still a sin. 2. Even though divorces in this country range into the millions every year, in heaven s sight there is still only one cause for divorce. (Matthew 19:9) Time or circumstances will not change that. 3

3. Even though drinking is considered a right owned by all, heaven still frowns on it. (Proverbs 20:1) Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging Drunkenness is a sin. (Romans 13:13, Galatians 5:21) (Galatians 5:18) and be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess refers to the process by which one becomes drunk. The first drink starts the process. 4. Movies are more evil than ever. Ratings represent a feeble effort to warn of their content. Such sordid evil defiles the mind with sinful thoughts. Garbage in garbage out. The effect may be gradual, but the outcome is devastating. The lust of the eye is still a sin. (1 John 2:15-17) Remember, nothing has changed in heaven. III. The Word of God is Still the Law of Heaven and Earth A. In the beginning, the voice of the Almighty shattered the blackness of the hour with the words, Let there be light. From that primeval moment to the present, when God speaks, all heaven and responsible creatures on earth listen to what he says. B. (Psalms 119:89) Thy word is settled in heaven i.e. stationed-established C. The one thing God always says, in every age: leave my word alone. (Deuteronomy 4:2) Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it See also Revelation 22:18-19. D. We show disrespect for the bible by: 1. Outright rebellion and denial of its teachings. a. Many read and refuse to obey: Baptism for remission of sins Acts 2:38 Accept the concept of one body Ephesians 4:4 Weekly observance of Lord s Supper Acts 20:7 The use of one cup in the communion service Matthew 26:26-27 Vocal music and not instrumental music Ephesians 5:1; Colossians 3:16 b. Anytime we fail to do what is commanded or do that for which there is no scriptural justification, we rebel against God. 4

Remember, nothing has changed in heaven. The bible still reads the same today as always. 2. By substituting a subjective standard for an objective one. a. The bible is God s yard stick, His measuring reed. b. It does not change 1 Timothy 3:16-17 all scripture given by c. Today many feel their religion they think they are right. Some claim to experience miracles, speak in tongues, see visions, or hear voices. d. The question is not did he speak in tongues, but does the bible teach that such is possible? When I lay claim to something on the basis that I felt it or believe something because I think it is all right, I am using my subjective feelings rather than the objective yardstick of God s word. IV. Heaven is Still the Beautiful Home of the Soul Its beauty will never fade. The reality of its existence will never diminish or cease. (John 14:1-2) Let not your hearts (Hebrews 12:13) They seek a country People of all ages have and still do. This world is not our home; we are not satisfied here. Those who seek and serve God will never be content to remain on this earth. Here, in this life, our homes decay, change and vanish. On everything about us we see the evidence of change. But in heaven all things remain the same: Beautiful gates of pearl Walls of majestic jasper A street of pure gold A tree with life giving fruit A river with life sustaining water No sun or moon God is the light No tears, pain or sorrow. No sad good-byes The gates are not shut by day or night. For there is no night there. How Beautiful Heaven Must Be 5

We read of a place that s called heaven Twas made for the pure and the free These truths in God s word He has written How beautiful heaven must be What a consolation to know that there is a place where nothing ever changes, but all things remain the same. 6
