Children Sabbath School Lesson #109 for 1-3-2015 Song for opening the Sabbath School: A Song of From the Book of Chapters Isaiah 43:1-2 Margins O Israel, Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called [thee] by thy name; thou [art] mine. When thou passest through the waters, I [will be] with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned. Opening Prayer requesting one of the little ones or mommies or daddies to give prayer Lesson #109: Imprisonment and Death of John, Part 4 Proverbs 20:1 (KJV) Wine [is] a mocker, strong drink [is] raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. This week boys and girls, we will continue with Part 4 of our lesson entitle, Imprisonment and Death of John of our study book! Isaiah 59:14 (KJV) And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. Isaiah 59:15 (KJV) Yea, truth faileth; and he [that] departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the LORD saw [it], and it displeased him that [there was] no judgment. Deuteronomy 28:65 (KJV) And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: Deuteronomy 28:66 (KJV) And thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life: Deuteronomy 28:67 (KJV) In the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. Mark 6:26 (KJV) And the king was exceeding sorry; [yet] for his oath's sake, and for their sakes which sat with him, he would not reject her. Mark 6:27 (KJV) And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison, Mark 6:28 (KJV) And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damsel: and the damsel gave it to her mother. Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#109 (1.3.15) Page 1

Let s continue in our book Desire of Ages, Chapter #22, pages 222 223 Herod waited in vain to be released from his oath; then he reluctantly commanded the execution of the prophet. Soon the head of John was brought in before the king and his guests. Forever sealed were those lips that had faithfully warned Herod to turn from his life of sin. Never more would that voice be heard calling men to repentance. The revels of one night had cost the life of one of the greatest of the prophets. {DA 222.1} Oh, how often has the life of the innocent been sacrificed through the intemperance of those who should have been guardians of justice! He who puts the intoxicating cup to his lips makes himself responsible for all the injustice he may commit under its besotting power. By benumbing his senses he makes it impossible for him to judge calmly or to have a clear perception of right and wrong. He opens the way for Satan to work through him in oppressing and destroying the innocent. "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise." Proverbs 20:1. Thus it is that "judgment is turned away backward,... and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey." Isaiah 59:14, 15. Those who have jurisdiction over the lives of their fellow men should be held guilty of a crime when they yield to intemperance. All who execute the laws should be lawkeepers. They should be men of self-control. They need to have full command of their physical, mental, and moral powers, that they may possess vigor of intellect, and a high sense of justice. {DA 222.2} Question: how often has whose life been sacrificed through the intemperance of those who should have been guardians of justice? And, He who puts what to his lips makes himself responsible for all the injustice? Answer: The life of the innocent. And, the intoxicating cup he may commit under its besotting power by benumbing his senses he makes it impossible for him to judge calmly or to have a clear perception of right and wrong. Song: Let s learn a beautiful scripture song dear one from the book of John, which tells us of the innocent Saviour that was sacrifice for our sins together! John 3:16-17 (KJV) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. The head of John the Baptist was carried to Herodias, who received it with fiendish satisfaction. She exulted in her revenge, and flattered herself that Herod's conscience would no longer be troubled. But no happiness resulted to her from her sin. Her name became notorious and abhorred, while Herod was more tormented by remorse than he had been by the warnings of the prophet. The influence of John's teachings was not silenced; it was to extend to every generation till the close of time. {DA 222.3} Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#109 (1.3.15) Page 2

Question: what was the result of both Herod and Herodias actions because of their sins? And, what was the result and influence of John s teachings even after his death? Answer: Her name became notorious and abhorred, while Herod was more tormented by remorse than he had been by the warnings of the prophet. And his influence was not silenced; it was to extend to every generation till the close of time. Herod's sin was ever before him. He was constantly seeking to find relief from the accusings of a guilty conscience. His confidence in John was unshaken. As he recalled his life of self-denial, his solemn, earnest appeals, his sound judgment in counsel, and then remembered how he had come to his death, Herod could find no rest. Engaged in the affairs of the state, receiving honors from men, he bore a smiling face and dignified mien, while he concealed an anxious heart, ever oppressed with the fear that a curse was upon him. {DA 223.1} Question: why couldn t Herod find any rest? And why was he constantly seeking to find relief from the accusing of a guilty conscience? Answer: As he recalled John s life of self-denial, his solemn, earnest appeals, his sound judgment in counsel, and then remembered how he had come to his death. Herod had been deeply impressed by the words of John, that nothing can be hidden from God. He was convinced that God was present in every place, that He had witnessed the revelry of the banqueting room, that He had heard the command to behead John, and had seen the exultation of Herodias, and the insult she offered to the severed head of her reprover. And many things that Herod had heard from the lips of the prophet now spoke to his conscience more distinctly than had the preaching in the wilderness. {DA 223.2} Question: what has been deeply impressed upon Herod by the words of John? And, what effect did the many things that Herod had heard from the lips of the prophet have on his conscience? Answer: That nothing can be hidden from God, he was convinced that God was present in every place. And the prophet now spoke to his conscience more distinctly than had the preaching in the wilderness. Song: Let s learn a beautiful scripture song together dear ones from the book of James, which tells us about the blessing Herod lost for not becoming a doer of God s Word! James 1:22-25 (KJV) But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth [therein], he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#109 (1.3.15) Page 3

Song: Be a Doer of God s Word Be a doer of God s word (2 xs) And do what you have heard; then God s blessing will be all, all you do Be a doer of God s word (2 xs) And do what you have heard; then God s blessing will be all, all you do Do not be like that man in the mirror, He forgets what he sees, and needs to see clearer Do not forget what you had heard; Stand on the truth in God s word And be a doer, be a doer of God s word When Herod heard of the works of Christ, he was exceedingly troubled. He thought that God had raised John from the dead, and sent him forth with still greater power to condemn sin. He was in constant fear that John would avenge his death by passing condemnation upon him and his house. Herod was reaping that which God had declared to be the result of a course of sin,--"a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: and thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life: in the morning thou shalt say, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! for the fear of thine heart wherewith thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see." Deuteronomy 28:65-67. The sinner's own thoughts are his accusers; and there can be no torture keener than the stings of a guilty conscience, which give him no rest day nor night. {DA 223.3} Question: what was Herod reaping that which God had declared to be the result of a course of sin? And what shall he say for the fear of his heart? Answer: He suffer with a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind: and thy life shall hang in doubt before thee; and thou shalt fear day and night, and shalt have none assurance of thy life. And, Would God it were even! and at even thou shalt say, Would God it were morning! Song: Let s learn a beautiful scripture song together dear ones from the book of Roman! Romans 11:33 (KJV) O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable [are] his judgments, and his ways past finding out! O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable [are] his judgments, and his ways past finding out! Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#109 (1.3.15) Page 4

Gather the little ones together! It s Story Time! Our book selection this Sabbath is entitle, Sons and Daughters of God Chapter 1- He is Stronger and More Mighty Than Our Adversary Narrated by our dear Brother Graves! Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle. Psalm 24:8. {SD 25.1} Christ was strong to save the whole world. He wanted all. He could not endure the thought that one should be lost. He wept at the grave of Lazarus, that He could not save every one whom Satan's power had laid low in death. He had given Himself a ransom for many, even all who would avail themselves of the privilege of coming back to their loyalty to God.... When He raised Lazarus from the dead, He knew that for that life He must pay the ransom on the cross of Calvary. Every rescue made was to cause Him the deepest humiliation. He was to taste death for every man. {SD 25.2} In His life on earth, Christ developed a perfect character, He rendered perfect obedience to His Father's commandments. In coming to the world in human form, in becoming subject to the law, in revealing to men that He bore their sickness, their sorrow, their guilt, He did not become a sinner. Before the Pharisees He could say, "Which of you convinceth me of sin?" Not one stain of sin was found upon Him. He stood before the world the spotless Lamb of God. {SD 25.3} From the light of His exalted purity, the world's Redeemer could see that the maladies from which the human family were suffering were brought upon them by transgression of the law of God. Every case of suffering He could trace back to its source. In every case He read the sad and awful end of unrepenting sinners. He knew that He alone could rescue them from the pit into which they had fallen. He alone could place their feet in the right path; His perfection alone could avail for their imperfection. He alone could cover their nakedness with His spotless robe of righteousness.... He is strong to deliver. Help has been laid on One that is mighty. He encircles man with His long human arm, while with His divine arm He lays hold of Omnipotence. {SD 25.4} Next Week We will end with Part 5 of our study entitles, Imprisonment and Death of John in our lesson book Desire of Ages! Closing Prayer request one of the little ones or mommies or daddies to give prayer. Next Sabbath: Chapter 22 Imprisonment and Death of John, Sabbath January 10, 2015.
