Civil Source Civil Engineers Make the Difference They Build on the Quality of Life s Message By Bob Davis, PE ASCE Utah Section Newsletter Each year ASCE holds their statewide Annual Meeting in May. This is a special event where members from across the State meet together. An influential engineer or well known speaker is invited to address us. As always, the office. A field tour of an BBQ was tons of fun! engineering project of interest is conducted after the luncheon. This year is no exception. We are excited to announce that Friday, May 18, 2007 will be the ASCE Annual Meeting in Utah. The luncheon will be held at Thanksgiving Point in Utah County at noon. We are very excited that regional and national officers of ASCE have been invited to speak with us to give us their perspective on the engineering profession. Election results for Utah Branch and Section officers will be announced and the newly elected officers will be welcomed. Following the Annual Meeting a tour of the almost completed $200 million Metropolitan Water District Point of the Mountain Water Treatment Plant will be held. This is a great opportunity to spend some time furthering your education of the engineering profession and meeting with some great people. Watch for more details on the web site and in Civil Source. WANTED Water Resource Engineer Bowen, Collins & Associates Draper, Utah Bowen, Collins & Associates specializes in providing water, wastewater, storm water, ground water, civil engineering, and environmental services to clients in the Intermountain West. Younger Member Forum The Younger Member Forum held its Spring BBQ this past month on the 27 th of April at the Sugarhouse Park. The combined event with the student chapters was again a success this year. We appreciate all those who helped and those who attended. We hope it was enjoyable for everyone. The primary duty of the Water Resource Engineer will be to assist in the preparations of plans, specifications, supporting documents, and permit applications for development and public works projects. Additional duties will include computerized hydraulic and hydrologic modeling. Candidate must also have great communication skills. Experience Required: BS Degree in Civil Engineering 0-10 years experience in water resource/ wastewater facility design and preparation of technical reports EIT registration Knowledge of Microsoft Office Southern Utah Branch The Southern Utah Branch took a tour of the Quail Creek Water Treatment Plant in March. We have a luncheon scheduled for noon on May 17 th at Staheli Catering. The presenter will be Travis Walbeck from Rosenberg Associates and he will be speaking about Elim Valley, a masterplanned community planned in Hurricane, Utah. Arthur O. LeBaron, P.E. Southern Utah Branch Geotechnical Group The Geotechnical Group does not have any announcements for May. The spring session of the P.E. Exam Review was completed in time for those attending to take the exam on the 20 th. Pass or fail, taking the exam is one step in the right direction for the continuation of a professional engineering career. Congratulations to all who took the exam! The YMF outreach kits have been distributed around the area to those who have shown interest in participating. Finding the time to participate can be tough at times. The kits have been created in a manner to help alleviate the time commitment

required to prepare. The kits may be taken to any location you desire: schools, parks, malls, scout meetings, etc.. Anyone looking to participate in engineering outreach now has a single point of contact to the resources already prepared to get going. The kits are probably most suitable for ages in elementary grades 4, 5, or 6. If you would like to participate and volunteer in the outreach program please let us know. The kits can be shipped to anyone and anywhere in the state that is interested in outreach. Please contact Cable Murray at cmurray@jacobsenconstruction.com if you would like more information. WANTED Facility Project Manager Industrial Construction Management Clearfield, Utah Duties will include working on assigned Capital Projects and preparing authorization requests for presentations and subsequent approvals via Senior Staff. The Facility Project Engineer will also manage the design staff working on assigned projects and ensure that facilities and equipment are designed, procured and installed to meet customer needs. Experience Required: BS Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering Licensed Professional Engineer in Utah Extensive experience in design, project management and construction management of Industrial Facilities Minimum of 7 years experience Strong knowledge of local building codes as well as national building codes (NFPA, IBC, NEC) Installing/commissioning industrial equipment Designing concrete foundations, steel building structures and underground utilities AutoCAD 2007, good oral and written skills We still continue to be in need of help with updating and maintaining our web page and e- mail list. The web page is already set up and is in a format that does not require any web page programming skills.
