Loving God! Loving People! Loving Life! Message Notes Dive In Part Three Life Church Smyrna Sunday, June 25, 2017 10:30am Pastor Shell Osbon Acts 2:41-47 41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day - about 3,000 in all. 42 All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord s Supper), and to prayer. 43 A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44 And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. 45 They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need. 46 They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity - 47 all the while praising God and enjoying the goodwill of all the people. And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. (NLT) 1. Dive In To Discipleship Acts 2:42a All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles teaching... 1. Dive In To Discipleship Discipleship is the intentional process by which people grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. 3
Acts 2:42a All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles teaching... (NLT) There were over 3,000 Christ followers who were committed to an intentional process of discipleship. Acts 2:47b And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. (NLT) People were giving their lives to Christ daily and they needed help to become devoted followers of Christ. 4
Dietrich Bonhoeffer: Christianity without discipleship is always Christianity without Christ. a) Discipleship Is About Following Mark 3:13-14b 13 He went up on the mountain and called to Him those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him. 14 Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him... (NKJV) Before giving them something to do, Jesus wanted His disciples to be with Him and to learn from Him. 5
Mark 1:16-18 16 One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living. 17 Jesus called out to them, Come, follow Me, and I will show you how to fish for people! 18 And they left their nets at once and followed Him. (NLT) These men were willing to leave everything in order to fully follow Jesus. b) Discipleship Is About Listening John 10:27 My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me. (NLT) Jesus really wants it to be easy for us to hear His voice and then to follow Him fully. 6
Matthew 11:15 Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand! (NLT) We not only need ears in order to listen but we also have to want to listen. c) Discipleship Is About Learning Matthew 10:24-25 24 Students are not greater than their teacher and... 25 Students are to be like their teacher... (NLT) As a disciple, we should always be learning from Jesus and striving to be more like Jesus. 7
2 Timothy 4:3-4 3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will reject the truth and chase after myths. (NLT) Some people are only interested in finding someone who will tell them what they want to hear. d) Discipleship Is About Doing John 14:12 I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in Me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father. (NLT) Jesus really does want His followers to do everything that He did and more! 8
