Session Six Filled: Find Your Tribe Acts 2:1 4 (NLT) On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. God set three appointments with Israel every year. 1. Passover- It signifies remembering the exodus from Egypt. 2. Pentecost (Shavu ot)- It signifies remembering the harvest and giving of law at Mount Sinai. 3. Tabernacles (Sukkot)- The ingathering around Jerusalem and remembering the journey in wilderness and living in tents. Pentecost- The Word Pentecost means fiftieth. This is because it is marked as fifty days after Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread. The time between the feast was a time of great anticipation. The Plan- Genesis 9:1 (NLT) Then God blessed Noah and his sons and told them, Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth. Genesis chapter 10 outlines the dispersion of the three sons of Noah and their geographical territory. Language Matters- Genesis 11:1 (NLT) At one time all the people of the world spoke the same language and used the same words. Rebellion- Genesis 11:4 (NLT) Then they said, Come, let s build a great city for ourselves with a tower that reaches into the sky. This will make us famous and keep us from being scattered all over the world. Confusion- Genesis 11:5 7 (NLT) But the LORD came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building. 6 Look! he said. The people are united, and they all speak the same language. After this, nothing they set out to do will be impossible for
them! 7 Come, let s go down and confuse the people with different languages. Then they won t be able to understand each other. Find your tribe- Fresh Start- Genesis 12:1 3 (NLT) T h e LORD had said to Abram, Leave your native country, your relatives, and your father s family, and go to the land that I will show you. 2 I will make you into a great nation. I will bless you and make you famous, and you will be a blessing to others. 3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those who treat you with contempt. All the families on earth will be blessed through you. Climbing Up Sinai- Exodus 24:15 18 (NLT) Then Moses climbed up the mountain, and the cloud covered it. 16 And the glory of the LORD settled down on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day the LORD called to Moses from inside the cloud. 17 To the Israelites at the foot of the mountain, the glory of the LORD appeared at the summit like a consuming fire. Begin Building- Exodus 25:8 9 (NLT) Have the people of Israel build me a holy sanctuary so I can live among them. 9 You must build this Tabernacle and its furnishings exactly according to the pattern I will show you. Restoration of Language- Zephaniah 3:9 (KJV) For then will I turn to the people a pure language, That they may all call upon the name of the LORD, To serve him with one consent. From Sinai to Zion- Hebrews 12:18 22 (NLT) You have not come to a physical mountain, to a place of flaming fire, darkness, gloom, and whirlwind, as the Israelites did at Mount Sinai. 19 For they heard an awesome trumpet blast and a voice so terrible that they begged God to stop speaking. 20 They staggered back under God s command: If even an animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned to death. 21 Moses himself was so frightened at the sight that he said, I am terrified and trembling. 22 No, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to countless thousands of angels in a joyful gathering. Mount Sinai- Exodus 32:25 29 (NLT) Moses saw that Aaron had let the people get completely out of control, much to the amusement of their enemies. 26 So he stood at the entrance to the camp and shouted, All of you who are on the LORD s side, come here and join me. And all the Levites gathered around him. 27 Moses told them, This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Each of you, take your swords and go back and forth from one end of the camp to the other. Kill everyone even your brothers, friends, and neighbors. 28 The Levites obeyed Moses command, and about 3,000 people died that day. Not A Few But Many- Acts 2:15 16 (NLT) These people are not drunk, as some of you are assuming. Nine o clock in the morning is much too early for that. 16 No, what you see was predicted long ago by the prophet Joel:
Acts 2:17 18 (NLT) In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams. Mount Zion- Acts 2:40 41 (NLT) Then Peter continued preaching for a long time, strongly urging all his listeners, Save yourselves from this crooked generation! 41 Those who believed what Peter said were baptized and added to the church that day about 3,000 in all. Language given at Babel to confuse the building- Language given at Pentecost to unite the building- Moses climbed- Holy Spirit came down. Calling All Nations- Acts 2:7 (NLT) They were completely amazed. How can this be? they exclaimed. These people are all from Galilee, 8 and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages! 1. Eunuch of Ethiopia- The angel spoke and Phillip went to the posterity of Ham- Acts 8:26 27 (NLT) As for Philip, an angel of the Lord said to him, Go south down the desert road that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza. 27 So he started out, and he met the treasurer of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under the Kandake, the queen of Ethiopia. The eunuch had gone to Jerusalem to worship, 2. Saul of Tarsus- The Lord spoke to Ananias and he went to the posterity of Shem- Acts 9:11 (NLT) The Lord said, Go over to Straight Street, to the house of Judas. When you get there, ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying to me right now. 3. Cornelius of Italy- The Spirit said unto Peter and he went to the posterity of Japheth. Acts 10:1 (NLT) In Caesarea there lived a Roman army officer named Cornelius, who was a captain of the Italian Regiment. Close Find Your Tribe- Acts 2:37 39 (NLT) Peter s words pierced their hearts, and they said to him and to the other apostles, Brothers, what should we do? 38 Peter replied, Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away all who have been called by the Lord our God. A. Born Again- John 3:3 5 (NLT) Jesus replied, I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God. 4 What do you mean? exclaimed Nicodemus. How can an old man go back into his mother s womb and be born again? 5 Jesus replied, I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.
God Breathed- John 20:22 (NLT) Then he breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone s sins, they are forgiven. If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven. B. God Baptized- Acts 1:7 8 (NLT) He replied, The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Stand Out- Acts 2:14 (NLT) Then Peter stepped forward with the eleven other apostles and shouted to the crowd, Listen carefully, all of you, fellow Jews and residents of Jerusalem! Make no mistake about this. John 18:25 (NLT) Meanwhile, as Simon Peter was standing by the fire warming himself, they asked him again, You re not one of his disciples, are you? He denied it, saying, No, I am not.
