Developing Leaders Who Are Led

THE GOOD SHEPHERD PART 2 SABBATH SCHOOL LESSON

Study on the Holy Spirit Study 25 Administration/Leadership This week s study we will look at the gift of Administration/Leadership. We have only one more gift to study next week. 1 Cor 12:28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. The word for administrations in the KJV is governments, with the following definition from the Vines dictionary Greek Word: kubernesis Usage Notes: from kubernao, "to guide" (whence Eng., "govern"), denotes (a) "steering, pilotage;" (b) metaphorically, "governments or governings," said of those who act as guides in a local church, So the gift of administrations would be to guide or direct the church. Romans 12:8 he who exhorts, in exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. The word lead in the KJV is ruleth or rule. Greek Word: proistemi Usage Notes: lit, "to stand before," hence, "to lead, attend to" (indicating care and diligence), is translated "to rule" with reference to a local church, The word diligence means Greek Word: spoude Usage Notes: "earnestness, zeal," or sometimes "the haste accompanying this," So to put this all together we would say eagerly attending to or standing before the church What does it mean to guide or attend to the church? Our first example of it would be in: Ex 3:10-12 "Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt." But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?" So He said, "I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain." 1

Here we see God talking to Moses with God instructing him to lead the people out of Egypt. To put it in more current terms, it would be God directing a leader to take the people from the world and bringing them to Jesus. And how is this done? Let s look in: Matt 10:16 Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. The only way Moses was able to bring the people out of Egypt was to go into Egypt. Jesus has sent us out into the world to bring people out of Egypt (a type of the world) and bring them to the Promised Land (with Jesus). 2 Tim 2:24-26 (NLT) The Lord's servants must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone. They must be able to teach effectively and be patient with difficult people. They should gently teach those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people's hearts, and they will believe the truth. Then they will come to their senses and escape from the Devil's trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants. John 17:14-18 I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. But the leaders of the church are not always what we would consider the cream of the crop. Look at some of the resumes from current leaders or pastors at several Calvary Chapels. Former drug addicts, gang members, mental patients, even someone ready to go postal on his wife and kids. Yes, these are the pastors of some of the Calvary Chapels today. Let s suppose that your church is without a pastor, and as your looking over the resumes of different pastors, you come across one that says, former drug user, and woman chaser would you even consider him as your pastor? What if it said that he was in a mental institution for a year because the drugs fried his brains? Would you consider him? What about a murderer, or someone who totally put down Christians, he beat them and had them thrown in jail? We forget what Jesus saved us from or pulled us out of. What would your resume say? Here is a past leader telling what kind of person he used to be. Acts 26:9-11 Indeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth. This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up 2

in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them. And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities. This was Paul, a man we would never choose to be a leader. But the Lord did, listen to what the Lord said to him: Acts 26:15-18 So I said, 'Who are You, Lord?' And He said, 'I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you. I will deliver you from the Jewish people, as well as from the Gentiles, to whom I now send you,'to open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in Me.' God has chosen the foolish things of this world to shame those who think they are wise. 1 Cor 1:26-29 (NLT) Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world's eyes, or powerful, or wealthy when God called you. Instead, God deliberately chose things the world considers foolish in order to shame those who think they are wise. And he chose those who are powerless to shame those who are powerful. God chose things despised by the world, things counted as nothing at all, and used them to bring to nothing what the world considers important, so that no one can ever boast in the presence of God. I am living proof of this verse. I m not well educated. I don t have a college degree; I never even finished High School and only got my GED a few years ago. But still God pours His Spirit into me and gives me the words and ability to teach others His word. What an awesome God we serve; He not only gave me His Son but also other gifts of the Holy Spirit. What about you, do you have His Son in your life? If you do, what about gifts of the Holy Spirit? If God can use someone like me, then He can use you too. Has God blessed you abundantly? I m not talking the world s riches; I m talking of His riches that never perish. Matt 6:19-21 Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. I m not rich either, at least not by the worlds standards, but God always supplies my needs, even over and above. 3

Don t be discouraged if you re not rich or if someone else has more than you. Rejoice because your name is written in the Lambs book of life. Back to our study. All these men I have mentioned were led by the Spirit of God. They are not in bondage to their past just like we shouldn t be. They are new in Jesus Christ. Romans 8:14-17 (NLT) For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. So you should not be like cowering, fearful slaves. You should behave instead like God's very own children, adopted into his family--calling him "Father, dear Father." For his Holy Spirit speaks to us deep in our hearts and tells us that we are God's children. And since we are his children, we will share his treasures--for everything God gives to his Son, Christ, is ours, too. But if we are to share his glory, we must also share his suffering. Also these men do not speak of themselves, but they tell people about Jesus. John 16:14-15 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you. But in order to be a leader, you must first learn how to be servant. Matt 20:25-28 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave-- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." Luke 22:25-26 And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called 'benefactors.' But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. If you ever think you are too good to serve then you are making yourself better then Jesus. Sometimes a leader or administrator will lead in other positions. Ex 31:1-3 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: "See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship" 4

And leaders will sometimes be called away to minister to others. Acts 13:1-3 Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away. A leader knows that the things he does are not from his own strength, wisdom or knowledge. He knows that he is a fellow laborer in the church. You may not see the fruit of the ministry that you are doing, but God does! 1 Cor 3:5-15 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. Now he who plants and he who waters are one, and each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor. For we are God's fellow workers; you are God's field, you are God's building. According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one's work, of what sort it is. If anyone's work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. Let s look at: Judges 2:16-19 Nevertheless, the LORD raised up judges who delivered them out of the hand of those who plundered them. Yet they would not listen to their judges, but they played the harlot with other gods, and bowed down to them. They turned quickly from the way in which their fathers walked, in obeying the commandments of the LORD; they did not do so. And when the LORD raised up judges for them, the LORD was with the judge and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the LORD was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed them and harassed them. And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they reverted and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, by following other gods, to serve them and bow down to them. They did not cease from their own doings nor from their stubborn way. Are you a follower of a leader (pastor) or a follower of Jesus? Sometimes the Lord allows a pastor to leave a church to show the people who they are truly following. 5

If the pastor or leader in the church leaves and others follow him then they are not following Jesus but the leader or pastor. But if the leader or pastor leaves and they stay in the church that the Lord has put them in then they are following Jesus. If your pastor or one of the leaders left, would you leave too? There are also bad leaders, who can lead the church astray. Ezek 34:1-6 And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, "Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel, prophesy and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD to the shepherds: "Woe to the shepherds of Israel who feed themselves! Should not the shepherds feed the flocks? You eat the fat and clothe yourselves with the wool; you slaughter the fatlings, but you do not feed the flock. The weak you have not strengthened, nor have you healed those who were sick, nor bound up the broken, nor brought back what was driven away, nor sought what was lost; but with force and cruelty you have ruled them. So they were scattered because there was no shepherd; and they became food for all the beasts of the field when they were scattered. My sheep wandered through all the mountains, and on every high hill; yes, My flock was scattered over the whole face of the earth, and no one was seeking or searching for them." But says to that: Ezek 34:9-10 'therefore, O shepherds, hear the word of the LORD! 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I am against the shepherds, and I will require My flock at their hand; I will cause them to cease feeding the sheep, and the shepherds shall feed themselves no more; for I will deliver My flock from their mouths, that they may no longer be food for them." If God were to ask this question, what would you say? Isaiah 6:8 Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: "Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?" Then I said, "Here am I! Send me." One more thing before we end this week s study. Remember the beginning of this study and how we talked about Moses? Moses was a great leader, and he could administer just as well. But he needed help. We talked about this before, but let me give you another example. Ex 17:8-13 Now Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. And Moses said to Joshua, "Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand." So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And 6

Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword. Moses was a great leader, but did you notice as a leader when the battle was fierce and his hands fell so that the children of Israel were losing, that he did not go into battle. He stayed right where the Lord had told him to. If he had gone into battle, he may have died along with many of the Jews. So it is with the leaders, God has given them instruction and sometimes they think that they have to go into battle when the Lord has told them to stay where they are and pray. Also notice that when Moses became weary that there were others to help out, maybe just to knell beside and pray with him. Or stand by his side. Are you a prayer warrior? Has the Lord called you to come along side of the pastor or a leader and just pray with them? Remember: Matt 6:6 But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. 7
