With gratitude and joy I have returned back at Mundelein and wite to you. My class completed our ten week pilgrimage to the Holy Land. I look forward to sharing my experience with you! On Tuesday, April 11th at 7pm in the St. Patrick Parish Hall, I will be giving a presentation about the land, the people, and Scripture, all of which have come alive for me after living, walking, and praying in the footsteps of Christ! Additionally, I am getting closer and closer to my Diaconate Ordination! It is on Friday May 26th, 2017. I will serve my final academic year at Mundelein as a deacon (this title comes from a Greek word that means "service") and be ordained a priest in May 2018. I am so appreciative of your daily prayers and your encouragement through this process. Here is a picture of us herding sheep in Neot Kedumim, Israel. (That's me in the middle with the bright St. Pat's shirt.) It is good training because we all are going to become shepherds one day! Lucia got special permission to receive her First Holy Communion at age 6, a year earlier than normal, since she knew her catechism and explained the mystery of the Eucharist so well. In her Second Memoir, she gives the details and explains that the day before, right after her first confession, while kneeling in front of the statue of Our Lady of the Rosary in their church and asking Our Lady to keep her poor heart for God alone, Lucia said it seemed to me that she smiled and, with a loving look and kindly gesture, assured me that she would. Besides the smile, notice that the statue depicted Our Lady of the Rosary, as years later Mary would identify herself to the children during the last apparition. 4

Attached to our bulletins this Weekend is those red pamphlets entitled, Divine Mercy Novena and Chaplet. This Nine Day Novena starts on Good Friday and will conclude in the time to celebrate Divine Mercy. We are going to do Divine Mercy Sunday in a big way this year at St. Patrick Church. Please see Page Four for all those activities that we have planned. In 1926, a Polish woman named Helena Kowalska, entered the convent of the Congregation of Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in Warsaw. Poland. Her religious name was Sr. Faustina. Sr. Faustina worked quietly and obediently. Her will was to do God s will nothing more and nothing less. The simplicity of Sr. Faustina was such that she had many visions of purgatory, heaven, and hell and of Mary along with many other mystical experiences. Sr. Faustina s spiritual director ordered her to write down on paper her many visions and mystical experiences. None of the other nuns in the order were aware of her many visions and experiences. On Feb. 22, 1931, our Lord appeared to Sr. Faustina in His vision on Divine Mercy. The Lord was clothed in a white robe with his right hand raised, showing the wound from the nail. His left hand was placed near His Sacred Heart from which sprung two rays of light: one white to represent water and one red to represent blood. Our Lord instructed Sr. Faustina to have this image painted. In doing so, the world might learn about the Lord s Divine Mercy. In looking back on history, it appears that, on the brink of World War II our Lord once again opened up His Sacred Heart for the comfort of His suffering people, beginning with the people of Poland. St. John Paul II, as a young man on his way to and from the stone quarry where he worked during World War II, frequently stopped at the convent where Sr. Faustina lived and died. On April 18, 1993, St. John Paul II beatified Sr. Faustina. On April 18, 2000, St. John Paul II canonized Sr. Faustina. At that same canonization ceremony, St. John Paul II established the Feast of Divine Mercy to be celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter throughout the entire world. In the year 2001, St. John Paul II emphasized the glory of Divine Mercy when he said, Jesus said to Sr. Faustina, Humanity will never find peace until it turns to Divine Mercy. Divine Mercy is the Easter gift that the Church receives from the risen Christ and offers to humanity. St. John Paul died on the Vigil of Divine Mercy, April 2, 2005. He was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on Divine Mercy Sunday 2014. The Church now has two modern day saints who played prominent roles in the revealing of Christ s Divine Mercy. St. Faustina s diary, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, the Divine Mercy image along with frequent confession are keys to understanding God s Divine Mercy. For those people who go to Mass on Divine Mercy Sunday and receive the sacrament of Reconciliation on Divine Mercy Sunday are extended a plenary indulgence (the full remission of their sins and the punishment due to their sins up to that point in their lives). As many of you know, our chapel s name is Divine Mercy Chapel with a prominant image of the Divine Mercy. We also have a 1 st class relic of St. Faustina that we obtained during World Youth Day in Poland last July. Secondly, we have a 1 st class relic of Blessed Michael Sopocko in our Chapel here at St. Patrick. I m sure that the ARK gift shop here at St. Patrick Parish also has many books on St. Faustina, Divine Mercy, and Fr. Sopocko. Sincerely, Fr. Ivan Nienhaus 5

St. Patrick s RE Program - Lenten Project For the 2 nd year, St. Patrick s RE program has chosen for their Lenten service project to benefit The Haitian Project, Inc. and its Louverture Cleary School in Croix-des- Bouquets, Haiti. Louverture Cleary is a tuition free, Catholic, coeducational boarding school that provides for the education of academically talented and motivated students from Haitian families who cannot afford the cost of their children s education. St. Patrick s Lenten goal is $4,000! To join us in learning more about The Haitian Project (THP), or to donate, visit www.haitianproject.org. You can also send your contribution to 120 5th St. NW Cedar Rapids, IA 52405 (checks payable to The Haitian Project ). Make sure to note St. Patrick on your gift! Why support Education in Haiti? The results of a Louverture Cleary education are clear. In a country where over 70% of college graduates leave Haiti, 90% of LCS graduates are studying in university or working in professional fields IN HAITI and giving back to their communities. Those working make 10 to 15 times the per capita income of the country on average, ending poverty for themselves, and in many cases their families and those around them. Currently, THP educates about 360 students each year at Louverture Cleary School. Soon, THP hopes to embark on a second school to make double the impact in Haiti. You can also watch THP s 60 second video at: https://vimeo.com/162816614#t=nans Education First Because Education Works. Questions? Want to know more?
