Palm Sunday Epistle Reading The Reading is from St. Paul s Letter to the Philippians 4:4-9 Brethren, Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let all men know your forbearance. The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is evidence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, do and the God of peace will be with you.. Palm Sunday Gospel Reading The Reading of the Holy Gospel according to John 12:1-18 Let us attend, Six days before Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. There they made him a supper, Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at table with him. Mary took a pound of costly ointment of pure nard and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the ointment. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was to betray him), said Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor but because he was a thief, and as he had the money box he used to take what was put into it. Jesus said, Let her alone, let her keep it for the day of my burial. The poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me. Whe the great crowd of the Jews learned that he was there, they came, not only on account of Jesus but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests planned to put Lazarus also to death, because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. The next day a great crowd who had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying, Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel! And Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it; as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey s colt! His disciples did not understand this at first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that this had been written of him and had been done to him. The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead bore witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 3

Palm Sunday Today is a very special day in the life of the Church. Today we go back in history 2,000 years, but at Liturgy today we are actually re-living the moment as if it was happening for the first time. Today Jesus of Nazareth enters the Holy City of ancient Jerusalem. Today this man can do o wrong. Today this man is welcomed as royalty. Common sense tells us that this day is not supposed to end in any way other than happiness. Right? Look at the glad faces on the palm Sunday icon. You can almost hear the jubilant shouting. And look at the donkey. Somehow that donkey knew this was God she carried! But somehow she also knew even more. Iconographers depict it on her face and in her actions, unlike the meek beast of burden she normally was. Somehow she knew those adoring worshipers of God Whom she carried would soon become fickle and dangerous. But that day no danger was apparent. That day the Jerusalem road was supposed to lead only to high holyday Passover worship in Jerusalem. Absolutely nothing else. But not so. What a difference a little less than one week made between Christ s entrance into Jerusalem and His excruciating walk to the Cross. The Orthodox Church: 455 Questions & Answers by Stanley Q:Why do some churches give out Palms and others give out Laurels on Palm Sunday? A: The scriptures clearly describe that the crowds greeted Jesus on the first Palm Sunday by taking branches of palm trees as they went out to meet him crying Hosanna!Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord (John 12:13). But in many places in more temperate and colder climates palm trees do not grow and it has not always been possible to obtain palms. In these cases, people used some other greenery as a Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! substitute. Laurel may be one of these. The Russian people often use pussy-willow branches on Palm Sunday. They. Too have an appropriate meaning since they represent the new life of Spring paralleling the new life in the Resurrection of Christ. The spirit and intent is the important thing, not the formality. Let me remind you: Holy Week will take you to a place the entire year won t! The only way to Pascha Sunday is through this week. No other way. Don t miss a moment of Holy Week! Very Rev. FAMILY DAY RAFFLE DRAWING SUNDAY JUNE 3, 2018 Camp Nazareth s Family Day Raffle Tickets have arrived and are now available for purchase. Tickets are still only $20 for a opportunity to win the Grand Prize of $10,000. Proceeds from the raffle help defray maintenance and upkeep expenses throughout the year. Camp Nazareth is truly the crown-jewel of our Diocese and each year children from within and outside the Diocese enjoy coming to camp, renewing old friendships and making new friends, enjoying ALL that the Camp offers and at the same time learning about God and His Holy Orthodox Church through praying together, worshiping together and just as important PLAYING together and enjoying each other s company forging friendships that can last a life-time! We were allotted 28 tickets! LET S SELL THEM ALL! See Pani Joan to purchase your ticket after Liturgy! THE NON-EVENT RAFFLE This year we will not be having a Spring Basket Raffle. Cancellation of two bake sales (sponsored by the Ladies Altar Society) and the Basket Raffle (sponsored by the church) has significantly impacted the ability to financially help our church. To partially defray financial losses, each parishioner is asked in the Spirit of Stewardship, to give a cash donation of what they would have spent on the Spring Raffle. Some parishioners donate baskets, others donate cash for expenses. Still others buy door prizes and others purchase tickets. Please search your heart and support our Non-Event. Envelopes will be distributed for you to use for this special donation. Please return it to Rodney Kerrick by May 6th. Thank you and God Bless! 8
