Apostle James the Brother of St John the Theologian Commemorated April 30 The Holy Apostle James, the son of Zebedee, was the brother of St John the Theologian, and one of the Twelve Apostles. He and his brother, St John, were called to be Apostles by our Lord Jesus Christ, Who called them the "Sons of Thunder" (Mark 3:17). It was this James, with John and Peter, who witnessed the Raising of the Daughter of Jairus, the Lord's Transfiguration on Mount Tabor, and His agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. St James, after the Descent of the Holy Spirit, preached in Spain and in other lands, and then he returned to Jerusalem. He openly and boldly preached Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world, and he denounced the Pharisees and the Scribes with the words of Holy Scripture, reproaching them for their malice of heart and unbelief. The Jews could not prevail against St James, and so they hired the sorcerer Hermogenes to dispute with the apostle and refute his arguments that Christ was the promised Messiah Who had come into the world. The sorcerer sent to the apostle his pupil Philip, who was converted to belief in Christ. Then Germogenes himself became persuaded of the power of God, he burned his books of magic, accepted holy Baptism and became a true follower of Christ. The Jews persuaded Herod Agrippa (40-44) to arrest the Apostle James and sentence him to death (Acts 12:1-2). Eusebius provides some of the details of the saint's execution (CHURCH HISTORY II, 9). St James calmly heard the death sentence and continued to bear witness to Christ. One of the false witnesses, whose name was Josiah, was struck by the courage of St James. He came to believe in Jesus Christ as the Messiah. When they led the apostle forth to execution, Josiah fell at his feet, repenting of his sin and asking forgiveness. The apostle embraced him, gave him a kiss and said, "Peace and forgiveness to you." Then Josiah confessed his faith in Christ before everyone, and he was beheaded with St James in the year 44 at Jerusalem. St James was the first of the Apostles to die as a martyr. "Peace and forgiveness to you." St. Theodosius Orthodox Cathedral Ambo - Page 2

Parish Health Workshop Saturday, May 5th Parish Councils to Discuss Evangelization & Charitable Outreach. On Saturday May 5, all parishes in the Cleveland Deanery will participate in a workshop titled "Breaking Our Insularity Letting Our Light Shine". Background Parishes that are not growing become insular. They focus inwardly on their own problems and issues. Conversely parishes that are insular don't grow. Conceptual and real walls are built around the community keeping their light under a bushel. Insular parishes are reticent to share their faith with the neighborhood and immediate surroundings. Workshop Content Designed for parish council members, leaders and interested parish members the workshop will use examples from other Orthodox parishes to explore: * How do non Orthodox discover our parish? * How do non-orthodox view us once they find us? * How can we be more seeker sensitive? * How do we see and respond to others with selfless, charitable acts of love? * What keeps us from doing more? The goal of the day is for each parish to explore and commit to at least one goal & action. The workshop will be held at Ridge Manor. Registration & coffee at 9:00. The session begins at 9:30, includes lunch and will conclude by 3:30. Contact Father John if interested in participating: dean@sttheodosius.org The "Unexpected Joy" Icon of the Most Holy Theotokos (Commemorated May 1), is painted in this way: in a room is an icon of the Mother of God, and beneath it a youth is kneeling at prayer. The tradition about the healing of some youth from a bodily affliction through this holy icon is recorded in the book of St Demetrius of Rostov, The Fleece of Prayer [See Judges 6: 36-40]. The sinful youth, who was nevertheless devoted to the Theotokos, was praying one day before the icon of the All-Pure Virgin before going out to commit a sin. Suddenly, he saw that wounds appeared on the Lord's hands, feet, and side, and blood flowed from them. In horror he exclaimed, "O Lady, who has done this?" The Mother of God replied, "You and other sinners, because of your sins, crucify My Son anew." Only then did he realize how great was the depth of his sinfulness. For a long time he prayed with tears to the All-Pure Mother of God and the Savior for mercy. Finally, he received the unexpected joy of the forgiveness of his sins. The "Unexpected Joy" icon is also commemorated on January 25. St. Theodosius Orthodox Cathedral Ambo - Page 5
