Dear Friends, THIS WEEK AT FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH For the week of October 10, 2018 A Note from Your Pastor There are three things coming up over the course of the next month that I want you to know about and that I hope you ll participate in: Children s Sabbath Worship will take place Sunday, October 14. We will observe this occasion in worship as we celebrate the children in our midst and remember our call to help the most vulnerable among us, many of whom are our children. During this service we will see and hear our children as they lead worship. We will also come face to face with some hard realities as we recall the many children, even in our own state, who live in poverty, struggle with food insecurity, and more. We will have a special gift as Rev. Emily Steeples shares the sermon. She is a pastor, social worker, and foster parent who has much experience to share. We will also take a collection for Families Helping Families - an organization that supports foster families. Please bring the following items on Sunday: Diapers (sizes 4-6), Toddler sized socks, and Toddler sized underwear. Fall Stewardship Emphasis will begin Sunday, October 21. This is the time of year when we spend a few weeks talking about various aspects of stewardship and when we invite you to make your commitments of both financial support and ways you would like to serve in ministry for the coming year. Be watching your mailbox (yes, that actual box out by the curb!) as well as upcoming newsletters for more information. And please plan to be in worship with us as we explore what it means to Bring Our Action, Bring Our Wealth, and Bring Our Hearts to God. And while we spend a few weeks in the fall in intentional conversation as we plan for the coming year, I hope that we continue the conversation around stewardship throughout the year as we work to grow in generosity and to renew our commitment to serve the world and help bring about God s realm.. Safe Zone is coming to FCC. First Christian Church has been known for decades as a place that welcomes a wide variety of people. For at least twenty years people have heard welcome proclaimed whether you are old or young, gay or straight, rich or poor, even whether you are a Hawkeye or a Cyclone! This welcome has been important in many ways, but has been especially important to our gay and lesbian friends. Meanwhile, many of the conversations around questions of welcome have shifted and we haven t always kept up. Now instead of talking only about welcome to gay and lesbian people, we use abbreviations such as LGBTQ+ to talk about sexual orientation and gender identity. And while this shift has happened, many of us, especially those who aren t in the middle of these conversations, are left scratching our heads and trying to figure out what the initials stand for, what definitions are, and what it means to be safe and welcoming. In light of this, Sara Riggs, Jen Knights, and I have been working together to adapt for our setting a training used at the University. The training is called Safe Zone and will focus on conversation about where we have been, progress we have made in being welcoming, theological basis for welcome, how the conversations around sexual orientation and gender identity have shifted, what all those letters stand for, and how we can be aware of the needs of the LGBTQ+ community in order to be more welcoming. There will be two opportunities to participate in this conversation and we hope you ll choose one. They will take place on Sunday mornings (October 28 November 18) during the Sunday School hour and Monday evenings (October 29 November 19) at 6pm. I hope that whether you are uncertain about what this means, whether you are a committed ally, or whether you identify as LGBTQ+, you will join us for either the Sunday morning or Monday evening session. If you have questions, please let me know. I hope to see you Sunday! Jill

This Week at First Christian Church October 10, 2018 Saint Louis, Missouri October 4-7, FCC s 6-12 graders (and chaperones Jay Thomas, Jon Feaver and Kara Seaton) traveled to St. Louis. Friday we spent the day sorting thousands of donated items at the Angel Boutique, a thrift store that benefits a neighborhood based outreach ministry that provides food, job skills training, social services and early childhood education to families in need. We also blanketed the community in fliers to raise awareness about the services provided. Saturday we worked to help reclaim Washington Park Cemetery, which was established in 1920 as a (segregated) African American Cemetery and has been severely neglected (many parts remain completely overgrown). We used our evenings to experience St. Louis including a visit to Gateway National Park, the City Museum and the St. Louis Zoo. Come hear all about our amazing trip (with many more pictures to share) on October 28, following the potluck! Youth Mission Trip 2018 ADVICE FROM A PUMPKIN: Be well-rounded. Get plenty of sunshine. Give thanks for life s bounty. Have a thick skin. Keep growing. Be outstanding in your field. Think big! Ilan Shamir
