The Good News from SJB Principal s Weekly Letter Mark Your Calendar End of 3rd Quarter March 9 Reconciliation Service (3rd -5th grade, formal uniform) March 9 No School - Diocesan Employee Day March 10 Spring Break March 13-17 Spring Pictures March 31 Today s entrance song, We Are Yours, O Lord, is a reminder to be Christians in our daily lives. The refrain, Help us to remember who and what we are; We are yours, O Lord was sung beautifully by the students, as they continue their Lenten journey of growing closer to God through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. One of the verses, Help us to be kind to those in our lives and to everyone we meet, particularly struck me, as kindness is so important in a world that is filled with conflict and controversy. Here are some simple ways to be kind to others: Smile. Say Hello. Say I love you. Compliment someone. Be courteous. Offer to help. Send a note. Kindness changes the world one heart at a time. (Mary Davis) Saint John the Baptist Elementary s Lenten Penance Service (Grades 3-5) is tomorrow, March 8 at 11:15am. The theme is Let Your Light Shine, and the readings tell that when we share our food with the hungry, our light will shine. Each child (Grades 3-5 only) is asked to bring one or two nonperishable food items. Your child will use one of two formulas, depending on if he/she has received the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Students who have received the Sacrament of Reconciliation will say: Bless me Father for I have sinned. It has been since my last confession. I am sorry for. (Student chooses 1-2 things to tell the priest) Students who have not received the Sacrament of Reconciliation will say: Father, I am not Catholic. May I have your blessing?"
All students will take a prayer book or Bible to read while others are receiving the Sacrament. This is a time of reflection and prayer. Congratulations to Mrs. Danielle Carter, who was recognized at Mass as Saint John the Baptist Elementary s 2017 Outstanding Employee! Mother Teresa said, Peace begins with a smile. and this quote embodies Mrs. Carter. She arrives each morning with a smile and leaves each afternoon still smiling. Her optimistic outlook on life is contagious, and she once shared with Mrs. Burchett that she chooses to be happy. With a background in Special Education, Mrs. Carter developed and oversees Saint John the Baptist Elementary's Program Support Services. She embodies the philosophy that educators "must step outside the box" to meet students' needs. Between training ParaEducators to administer DIBELS, overseeing Read Naturally, teaching ESL students and more, Mrs. Carter approaches each day with a positive attitude, and she relishes each student's accomplishment! Mrs. Carter has challenged herself by chairing Saint John the Baptist Elementary's Scholastic Book Fairs, which have been more than successful. Her devoted husband, Blaine, is by her side at each Book Fair- setting up, cashiering on Parent & Grandparent Day and then quietly cleaning up - he too with a smile! Mrs. Carter's commitment to the students extends beyond the school year, as she offers summer math and reading programs to ensure the students' continued success. Mrs. Carter embodies both kindness and patience, and Saint John the Baptist Elementary is fortunate to have her on its faculty! A reminder that the Saint Patrick s Day Parade will be Saturday, March 18, and Reverend Bishop Solis will be the Grand Marshal! The entry numbers will be posted on Friday, March 10 for those who would like to walk with Utah Catholic Schools! Wishing each of you a wonderful Spring Break! In Faith, Nikki Ward, Principal Safety in the Parking Lot The safety of our children is a priority at our school. This is a reminder to follow all signs and rules of the road on campus. Please be respectful of parking on campus. When parking to come into the building or to pick up students, park only in designated parking spots. The use of handicapped spots and its adjacent loading/unloading area are for those with required credentials. Do not move cones that are in place. We cannot monitor all the cars, but please consider turning off your engine as you wait. Idling contributes to our already problematic air quality. Our teachers and 5 th grade Safety Patrol, work to keep everyone safe as they cross the parking lots to get into their cars. Please obey them and help all to be safe. Have a wonderful spring break!
