Camerontary A number of events have conspired to give me the theme. Wayne worked in a factory, and as happens when people are together they were carrying on a conversation. When that conversation turned to religion and church one of the folks said, I don t go to church, there are too many hypocrites there. Wayne responded, Seems to me that s the best place for us. It is a witty response that does not deny the charge that the church is full of hypocrites while at the same time debunking the claim that church people are expected to be/should be perfect. I don t know if that ended the conversation or if it convinced his conversation partner to give church, any church, a second chance. I do know that I have appreciated Wayne s response since first I heard it. One of the things I appreciated then and now is that Wayne included himself among the hypocrites. Each of us is guilty from time to time of lumping bad people into a them category and reserving the good category for us. That Wayne was willing to put himself in the hypocrite category means that he is aware that he has faults and flaws even as he encourages others, and himself, to live in a way that minimizes the effect of those faults in his life and the lives of the people around him. the best place for a sinner to be is in a church I also appreciated that he knew that the best place for a sinner to be is in a church, a congregation, that will lead people to a richer, fuller, deeper relationship with God in Christ. Wayne was aware that if it were not for the encouragement he received and gave in the life of the congregation he would lead a life full of trouble. And if he was so sure that he was one who was in church only to make other peoples lives better, he would be so much less than he could be as a person willing to receive and give all that we have to offer as people of God. Most of us have discovered that it is easy to stand in judgment of people who annoy us for one reason or another. Even those who are like the parts of ourselves that trouble us are easy to judge. Those who think they know everything are particularly annoying to those of us who really do is the way I have seen it/heard it/said it. And don t get me started on people who are not like me at all who try to horn in on something that is important to me; something that should stay just the way it is because that s the way I like it. (Yes, this whole paragraph was way too easy to type without even thinking about it.) The hard part is to recognize that I am a hypocrite, a sinner, a person in need of grace and mercy from God as well as from each of you. I saw something the other day on Facebook about child rearing. As I thought about it, I realized it not only speaks to the needs of children, it speaks to the needs of adults as well. Thinking your child as behaving badly disposes you to think of punishment. Thinking of your child as struggling to handle something difficult encourages you to help them through their distress. I am sure it is not as easy as these two sentences make it sound. It does seem important to look at others as struggling rather than as bad, to think in terms of help and encouragement rather than punishment. Jesus went to the cross because he believes and knows that we are each worth helping rather than punishing. 12 This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. (John 15:12-14) To be the people God calls us to be we spend our energy helping each other live out the command to love each other. And we help each other do that through help and encouragement rather than through punishment and judgment. Grace and Peace, Cameron

Catch the Spirit... Spring Rummage Sale Time for spring cleaning and then, bring those slightly used items to the church for our annual Spring Rummage Sale on May 19. This year will include vendors, lunch, donuts and coffee, and of course, our homemade noodles and sweets. Household items can be put in the trailer up until May 11. However, for large items, such as furniture, it is preferable that they be placed directly into the Fellowship Hall on or after May12. On Saturday, May 12, we will be meeting to set up tables and unload the trailer. Strong-armed help and trucks are especially needed. This is an ideal time to bring your donations since there will be help available to unload your vehicle and place them directly into the Fellowship Hall. We will need volunteers to work many areas. And don t forget the Sweets Room! Baked goods, breads, candy, fudge, chex mix, caramel corn, (yes please) popcorn balls... Oh My!! Other suggestions? Watch for packing information for your sweets next month. This is always a popular room. Any questions, call Susan. If you know of someone who might be interested in renting booth space, please contact Susan Bradley at 317-797-2120 or email her at sbradley60@sbcglobal.net. Guidelines and applications for vendor space are also in the church office and on the church website. Pray for God s blessings of great weather and a great turnout. Donations of soda and water are needed for the Rummage Sale. Feed the Need: Homeless Needs It has been asked a number of times What can the homeless use? Our response usually is Oh, about anything. This answer is not fair to your question. There are some basic needs which should go to the top of the list Shampoo Toothbrush Toothpaste Deodorant Comb Razor Scarf Hat Gloves Hand lotion Socks Mints/gum Bar soap Totes Wash Cloths Towels Underwear Small First Aid Kits The above items are needed throughout the year. Any clothing needs will depend on what season we are currently enjoying. It is you (the small church) that does. Whenever we ask, you respond to the upmost. Want to help? Thank you, Fred and Jackie Quiz: Church s Bulletin How well do you know the bulletin you are given each week? Here s a short quiz to test your knowledge. How well will you do?
