Knights of Columbus Doctor Briggs Council, No. 4597 Grand Knight s Report for October 2018 Brother Knights, The Chain of Life was again well represented by our Parish and members of the Knights of Columbus. The day was wet and cool and many thanks goes out to all the various members of Christian faiths that gave up part of their day to pray and make the public more aware of our stand for Life. The more disturbing part was the Face Book page and resulting newspaper coverage of our Brother Knight Larry Jangula who had the strength and individual courage to defend what he believes under open public ridicule. We are very proud of you Brother Larry and as Knights support your stand for the unborn and the dignity of all human life. Family: Families are at the very core of the Knights of Columbus. The order was founded by Father Michael McGivney for the purpose of protecting immigrant Catholic widows and orphans. With today s lifestyles it is very challenging to give back to those in need. We must be able to juggle our different roles within the church, community and our families. The Knights share the same beliefs and values and therefore the strength of each member is the family. Vivat Jesus, Wayne Schaad, Grand Knight
Knight of the Month September Mark Toth It is with a great deal of pleasure that we honour our Brother Knight Mark Toth for the Knight of the month of September 2018 Brother Mark is proving to be a very competent Treasurer and has really stepped up to the plate. He participates regularly at the 8:30 am Mass choir. He participated in the Chain of Life in Courtenay as well as the March for Life in Victoria. Brother Mark spends a good deal of time volunteering and gives of his time to help at the Food Booth. We count on Brother Mark for his input and reporting at our regular Executive and general meetings. His quiet demeanor and pleasant smile are qualities he shows as he works behind the scenes. Brother Mark Toth is an excellent example of a good Catholic Family man who regularly attends Mass and does contribute to the Knights principles of Charity, Unity and Fraternity. The Pope s Monthly Prayer Intention The Holy Father s prayer intention for October 2018 is: Evangelization The Mission of Religious That consecrated religious men and women may bestir themselves, and be present among the poor, the marginalized, and those who have no voice.
Family of the Month September Barry & Margaret Beardon Congratulations to Brother Ron Power on reaching the ripe young age of 75! For those Knights who do not know Bro Ron, he lives in Canada for our summer and then moves back to Australia for their summer. Talk about having one s cake and eating it. Bro Ron, we wish you all the best for your stay down under, but remember, time spent there still adds to your age!! Surprise(?) party, organized by his daughter Nell, held at the White Spot on September 26 th. A few Knights and wives who knew Ron, joined in the celebration.
Life Chain 2018 On Sunday September 30 th about 65 people, including at least 14 Knights, turned up for a silent vigil to protest against abortion the killing of innocent human life. Members from at least two of the other valley churches joined parishioners from CTK. The event was largely uneventful until near the close when a solitary pro abortion woman arrived and tried to spoil the re-election hopes of Brother Larry Jangula, our Active Catholic Pro Life Deputy Grand Knight and Mayor of Courtenay. Brother Knights, where were the approximately 100 plus council members who did not attend? Those who had a good reason for being absent need not feel guilty, but the rest should think hard about their duties as Catholics. As Catholics, we are expected to be well informed regarding matters of faith. The Church has taught from the first century that abortion is wrong. If you have any doubts on this study the Catechism of the Catholic Church and browse the Knights of Columbus website: < https://www.knights.net/cpages/defend > Above left: Brother Kyle Jones at his favorite lamppost, where he faithfully stands year after year. Above right: Most of the participants were trying to get a little shelter from the drizzle, which later turned to rain, under the tree canopy. Abortion in Canada is a social evil, and as a part of Canadian society it is our duty, both as Catholics and as Knights of Columbus, to take an active part in the public arena to make abortion illegal at all stages of an embryo s development. To remain silent about the killing of the unborn is to give your tacit support for it. If Our Lord Jesus Christ were to appear on earth now, what do you think his reaction would be to the current situation in Canada? If He looked into your eyes and said What action are you taking to fight this evil? what would you say? You had better think hard because you will have to give an accounting at your final judgment! If you feel that through God s mercy everyone goes to heaven pause and think hard. How would you feel sharing heaven with the souls of all those aborted, or those severely affected by it? CTK Youth Some of my young adults and youth volunteered their time at the annual L Arche pig roast fundraiser on Saturday, September 22nd. They worked hard serving and cleaning up. Roger Collin Youth Director Council #4597 Recruiting Drive The weekend of October 6th/7th the council held a recruiting drive for new members at all three Masses. Membership Director Bro Ron O Reilly ensured that there would be two or three Knights at each Mass to talk with any interested men. Bro Ron gave a short but very informative presentation at the end of each Mass, and this was very well received by the congregation. Fr Marek, Brother André Melançon at the information table council chaplain, also added a few words thanking the Knights for their work in the parish.
First Friday Breakfast October 2018 Following our regular First Friday Mass for deceased Knights the council provided breakfast for any parishioners feeling hungry. About 40 people came and enjoyed a hearty meal of sausages, pancakes, strawberry sauce and fruit salad. Total donations amounted to around $240, and after expenses council added about $110 to its general revenue account.
