ROME Thessalonica (Macedonia) Philippi (Galatia) Corinth Colosse Ephesus Mediterranean Sea Colossians (Israel) JERUSALEM Introduction Who wrote it? From where did they write it? Mark it on the map above. Who was it written to? What other partinent biblical information do we know about this place? What is the theme of the book? 1

colossians 1 1. Who wrote it (2)? 2. What are the recipients called (3)? 3. How does this greeting compare to previous greetings? 4. In this book there will be at least 4 verses that clearly show us that Paul had never really met these people. As you get to them, write them down here. 5. Vs. 38 are a single sentence chart it out (just like you did with the verses in Ephesians). 2

colossians 1 6. What is Paul so thankful for? 7. What did the Ephesians hear about? 8. How far had the Gospel been preached? 9. What can we learn about Epaphras from these early verses (4)? 10. Who preached the Gospel to the Colossians? 11. What is Epaphras relationship with Paul? 12. What caused Paul to pray for them? 13. Paul is praying that they would be filled with the knowledge of God s will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. This, according to the text, should bear forth at least 4 results. What are they? 14. Afterwards, he says that they would be strengthened with all might according to His glorious power to what ends (4)? 3

colossians 1 15. Now we get into the He is texts (vs. 1319). We can learn at least 24 things about Him. List out what they are. 16. Who is this Him? 17. What have we been delivered from? 18. What have we been delivered to? 19. What does God define as redemption here? 4

colossians 1 20. In v. 16, we learn Who the creation is created by and for. What/Who were you created for? 21. What/Who holds all things together? 22. What is Jesus relationship to the Church here? 23. What pleased the Father here? 24. If Jesus purpose is to reconcile us, to Whom is Jesus reconciling us? 25. What had to be done to make this reconciliation? 26. What 2 things did we used to be? 27. Where were we enemies of God? 28. How did He reconcile us? 29. He reconciled us to accomplish what? 30. If we want to remain holy, blameless and above reproach in His sight, what must we do (4)? 31. Write 4 things about the Gospel from this text. 32. What does Paul rejoice in here? 5

colossians 1 33. Now we get to a tough Scripture. Let s set some rules for engagement. When we approach such a Scripture, the first thing we do is set some boundaries. In the entirety of Scripture, what could Paul s filling up in his body what is lacking in Christ not mean? Write out some verses that show what this could not mean. 34. Now that we have set boundaries, let s move to stage 2. What does the context tell us about the verse? Obviously it is about Paul and about sufferings. What do we know from the immediate text (the paragraph that the verse is found in and the paragraphs that surround it)? 35. Now that we have set boundaries and set immediate context we look more to the book in entirety. What are some main themes in this book, and how do they pertain to the verse? We shall call this extended context. 36. So now we have set boundaries, set immediate context, and set extended context. Now that we have done those things, we can list out options. What could the text mean? 37. What is Paul s responsibility in fulfilling the Word of God? 38. What is the Mystery that Paul speaks of here? 39. Paul is preaching, warning, and teaching men in all wisdom to what end? Application In this chapter, we read that by and for Jesus, all things were created. As we fit into the category of created things, this means that we were made not only by Him, but also for Him. If you were created for Jesus, what does that mean in your everyday life? Have you ever really suffered in persecution for Christ? How? How has that affected those around you who believe? Pray that you would live today applying that fact that you were made for Jesus in everything you do. 6

colossians 2 1. What do Colosse and Laodicea have in common (2)? 2. What is this conflict (3)? 3. What is hidden in Christ? 4. Now, Paul is saying this so that they won t be deceived. How could they be deceived? 5. What 2 things is Paul rejoicing to see? 6. If we have received Christ Jesus the Lord, what should we do? 7. What 3 things have happened to them in the faith? 8. Paul then tells them to be careful or they will be cheated. What 4 things could cheat them? 9. What dwells in Jesus? 10. What are we in Jesus? 11. According to v. 10, what is Jesus? 12. As Christians, how are we all circumcised? 7

colossians 2 13. As Christians, how are we all baptized? 14. For review, which book carried a theme about the insignificance of worldly circumcision? 15. What other book speaks of our being buried with Him in baptism? 16. What other book speaks of our being dead in our trespasses and sins? 17. What has Jesus wiped out? 18. In v. 14, what 5 things can we learn about the handwriting of requirements? 19. What 3 things did Jesus do to the principalities and powers in v. 15? 20. What 5 things are we to let no one judge us in? 21. Why? What is the real substance (or important thing) that is the basis of judgment? 8

colossians 2 22. What 5 qualities do we see in those who are trying to cheat you of your reward? 23. What do we know about the future of the regulations such as Do not taste. Do not handle? 24. What do these regulations appear to be (3)? 25. What are these regulations ineffective in doing? Application Paul carefully warned the Colossians to be careful so as to not be cheated from man s philosophy, empty deceit, traditions, and the basic principles of this word, How have these very things affected your walk, and what do they look like to you? Pray that our God would protect you from any straying in these areas. 9

colossians 3 1. Since we died with Christ, what are we to seek and set our minds on (2)? 2. Why? 3. Where is Jesus in relationship to things above? 4. What is Christ called when He appears again? 5. What will happen to us when He appears? 6. What, therefore, are we to put to death? (6)? 7. What happens as a result of them? 8. Who does the wrath of God come upon? 9. Since we have put off the old man and with his deeds, what also are we to put off (6)? 10. What are we to put on? 10

colossians 3 11. What 2 things can we learn about the new man? 12. In v. 12, what 3 things are we called? 13. Now we have 5 more things to put on. What are they? 14. Is there a theme for the commandments in v. 13? 15. What else are we to put on? 16. What is love called here? 17. Now we have 2 commands that start with the word let. Remember that the idea of letting is not making something happen, but rather allowing it to happen. What 2 things are we to let happen? 18. What appear to be the results of letting the word of Christ dwell in you richly (3)? 19. Now in the book of Ephesians we are shown another situation that results in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. What happens there that causes us to speak to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs? 11

colossians 3 20. Now before we go any further, we need to list out all the things we are to put off and put on so that we have it clearly and plainly before us. Do that here. 21. No matter what we do, how are we to do it? 22. So we do all things in Jesus name. Now we see application for all this prep work: a. We are to put off the old man and the qualities thereof (as listed in question 20) b. We are to put on the new man that looks like Jesus (as listed in question 20) c. We are to let our hearts be ruled by Christ s peace and let the Word of God dwell in us richly. d. And now we are to act in the Name of Jesus Okay, no question here just putting all things in order before we proceed with the chapter. 23. In light of the above prerequisites, how are wives to act? 24. How are husbands to act? 25. How are children to act? 26. How are fathers to act? 27. How are workers (bondservants) to act? 12

colossians 3 28. No matter what we do, how are we to do it (notice the application area of those prerequisites are bookended with two ways that we are to act, no matter what we do)? 29. As we do all things heartily, we do it in full knowledge of what? 30. What does God promise about those who do wrong? Application Wow, there is so much in this chapter to challenge us to a radically victorious, altered lifestyle. It starts with living a transformed life. Take a look at what we leave behind in the old man and what we are to gain in the new. For personal reflection, how much of your life looks like the old man (as identified by the qualities listed in question 20) and how much looks like the new man? Make it a practice to pray every morning to put off the old man and put on the new man. Pray that God will empower you to do all things heartily in His name. 13

colossians 4 1. What are masters (bosses) to do and in what knowledge? 2. What is Paul confident that they are already doing (He challenges them to continue to do it)? 3. What are they to make sure is in their prayers? 4. What is Paul asking prayer for? 5. Paul then commends them to walk wisely in regards to whom? 6. What are we to do with our time? 7. In what 2 ways are we to speak with each other (Note: salt, in many countries, speaks of something enduring. Whether it is a covenant involving salt, or a coined phrase, it is something basic and transcending. Often in the traditional Asia Minor region, it symbolized the eternal)? 8. To what end? 9. In this final chapter, 8 people are going to say hello to them, 5 of which are Jewish and 3 that are not. Also, Paul will ask for personal messages to be sent to 3 people who are there in Colosse. As we go through this chapter, be sure to mark these people into those 3 categories and list them here. 10. What do we know about Tychicus (go through v. 11 to get these answers) (7)? 14

colossians 4 11. What can we learn about Onesimus (6)? 12. What can we learn about Aristarchus (4)? 13. What can we learn about Mark (4)? 14. What can we learn about Justus (4)? 15. Now a dividing line is drawn between the people in vs. 11 and prior versus the people in vs. 12 and beyond. What is the dividing issue? 15

colossians 4 16. What can we learn about Epaphras (Don t forget the issue listed in v. 11) (8)? 17. What can we learn about Luke (keep in mind that this is the Luke who wrote the gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts)(2)? 18. What do we know about Demas (2)? 19. What do we know about Nymphas (1)? 20. What are the Colossians to do once they have read this letter (2)? 21. What do we know about Archippus? 22. What does Paul ask them to remember? Application In this chapter, Paul challenges the Colossian church to continue in prayer with thanksgiving. How much of your prayer life involves thanksgiving? Pray for your speech to be full of grace, seasoned with salt... 16
