A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC HOPE IN THE YEAR OF FAITH ~ By Dr. Michael Downey Dear Parishioners & Friends, We rejoice, greet, and pray for our newly elected, the Pope of our One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church: POPE FRANCIS I (CARDINAL JORGE BERGOGLIO OF ARGENTINA) Last week, I wrote a brief introduction on Dr. Michael Downey concerning his authorship and specialization in Catholic Spirituality. We are fortunate to have him as our 2013 Lenten mission presenter because Dr. Downey has been directing retreats, giving conferences, and lecturing in many countries from Europe to Asia such as France, Ireland, Britain, New Zealand, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. The theme of this year Lenten mission is HOPE IN THE YEAR OF FAITH. This Sunday, many of you will have the opportunity to hear him speak at all the Sunday Masses except for the Saturday 5PM Mass. Dr. Downey was a Professor of Systematic Theology and Spirituality and St. John's Seminary, Camarillo for nearly 15 years. Through the years, he served as the Cardinal s Theologian for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the diocesan theologian for the Diocese of San Bernardino; Lent will be over in two weeks; your spiritual soul is hunger for God and would benefit only if you come. Treat you hungry soul with spiritual thoughts and delights. A.S.H. Sunday Reflection ~ The First Sunday of Lent is the Temptation of Jesus; Addiction was my reflection; the Transfiguration story in the Second Sunday inspired me to reflect on Shame; the Third Sunday, I used the Exodus event to reflect on the theme of Hostile environment. During the Fourth Sunday, I concluded that Addiction, Shame, and Hostile environment could cause a person or a community into Alienation. The story of the Prodigal Son brings out this reality of alienation; in our own life, people could alienate us in a number of different ways: (a) cultural differences; (b) faith traditions; (c) political views; and (d) family conflicts. In the context of faith, our sins also alienate us from God; often times we do not realize this consequence. Atonement is reconciliation. Christ atones or reconciles our sins through His Suffering and Death on the Cross; God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting their trespasses against them and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation (2Cor. 5). First Sacrament of Reconciliation for our CCS & church communities ~ On Saturday morning, our parish celebrated the first sacrament of reconciliation for our children from the school and the church; I am thankful to Sisters Anna & Bernadette, Mrs. Lourdes Parra Valoroso (2nd grade teacher), catechists and staff for all their efforts and assistances evangelizing the Word and the Sacraments. I am grateful to all the parents for their commitment to our Catholic faith. Without the encouragement and support of our parents, our children would not be in the program of our church or school. Your Time and Talents... Our Parish Needs Your Participation ~ I am thankful to our Pastoral Liturgy Council for all their assistance and guidance; during the last several years we have worked collaboratively together. Their participation has been very helpful. Together, we are not complete as a parish; we need your participation of your time and talents. Together we can transform our parish. Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel. WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH FORGIVEN Today's liturgy continues the message of forgiveness and reconciliation that we heard last week. The Church seems to be doing its utmost to deliver one simple message: "Your sins are forgiven!" What good news this is! Isaiah declares that God's saving action on our behalf is not something trapped in the past, but here and now. Paul urges us to recognize that true life is not "won" by following laws, however strictly, but is a free gift of God. Thus, our focus must be on the future, not on past misdeeds. Our eyes must be on the prize of life forever with God. In the Gospel, Jesus is challenged to demonstrate that he is a law-keeper, but he knows that this is a trap. If he counsels mercy, he will be declared an opponent of the law. If he follows the law and condones its punishment, he will be denounced as an inciter to murder. Jesus decides to do neither. Instead, he turns the tables and invites the crowd to forgo "legality" for the sake of forgiveness and reconciliation. J. S. Paluch Co... Readings (5th Sunday of Lent) Is 43:16-21; Ps 126:1-6; Phil 3:8-14; Jn 8:1-11 Treasures from our Tradition Next weekend, many churches provide palms to be carried in the opening moments of the liturgy, as we gratefully recall Jesus' entry into the holy city of Jerusalem. The children who greeted him on that day used what was both handy and traditional, since palms were carried to inaugurate the joyful harvest feast of Succoth. To this day, faithful Jews are directed to take a beautiful palm branch, green and straight as possible, called a lulav, and bind it with three myrtle branches fifteen inches long, and two longer willow branches. At the end of the temple service, everyone carries the lulav, circling the sanctuary in a dance called the Hoshanot, singing hymns of joy. In other climates, Jews and Christians alike have had to make accommodations over the years. In Italy, everyone carries olive branches today, often brought from their own garden. In England, forsythia branches are preferred, a relative of the olive, sign of peace. Germans prefer pussywillows, and others look for flowering spring branches. In our part of the world, what do you think would be the best choice to express joy and welcome, and to remind us of the joy of Christ's victory even as we prepare to commemorate his passion? James Field J. S. Paluch Co LECTORS & EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS SCHEDULE: MARCH 23 24, TEAM 4 MEET OUR CANDIDATES Holly Soriano RCIA is something that I ve thought about doing for a long time since I was never confirmed. It is my desire to learn more about the Catholic Church as well as work more on my faith. I also decided to complete the RCIA program now because I will be married in the Church later this year. Please pray for the Elect. Jose Henriquez, Danny Jewell, Silvia Lomeli, Sandra Mancia Mirna Ponce and Holly Soriano TIME IS TRULY A GIFT OF LIFE Every moment of the day is a gift of life to learn how to give of ourselves. Even as Jesus gave of himself, becoming poor that we might become rich (in God) so too, we must be ready to learn to give of ourselves in our time on earth so that we may be rich in heaven. Share the joy of serving! Join us in one of these dates as we prepare our church for the Holy Week & Easter services: Saturday, March 23 Holy Thursday, March 29 Holy Saturday, March 30 Cleaning and decoration will begin at 9:00am. Thank you for sharing your time. God bless you. THIS WEEKEND! MARCH 16-17
