WELCOME KS3 Welcome to Guildford Cathedral, the People s Cathedral - a place of welcome, worship, inspiration and engagement for people of all ages. Come and explore the last Anglican Cathedral consecrated on a new site, in 1961. Guildford Cathedral s Schools and Family Learning Department is dedicated to making your visit memorable, experiential and educational. We aim to provide inspiring learning experiences for all people of any age, enabling you to engage with the Cathedral and its significance in ways appropriate to you. We offer a selection of trails and workshops covering a diverse curriculum including Literacy, Mathematics, Art and Design, History and R.E. Our activities are aligned to both the National Curriculum and Diocese approved Curriculum. We will help you to fulfil requirements for these subjects and can even provide assessment opportunities. We can tailor a visit to meet your needs, for example, if you would like to combine different topics we can arrange a day for you based on your preferences. Alternatively, if you are in need of help with something in school - a project, a particular topic? We are more than happy to send a team to assist you. Special Educational Needs Schools and Non-UK Schools are also catered for with programmes designed specifically to match your needs. We are experienced teachers, children s workers and trained volunteers who have all been through enhanced DBS clearance and safeguarding training. Come and enjoy your Cathedral! Architecture, History and Art () Learn about Guildford Cathedral s unique history. Students can delve into our oral history archive, records and extensive collection to discover: Why Guildford Cathedral was built How it was built The problems that came about The personal connections individuals have to this iconic Grade II* listed building Learning objectives Students will understand and explore what religious architecture is and examples seen at Guildford Cathedral. (AT1) Students will reflect on the impact the architecture has on Christians, themselves and others. (AT2) Page 4 of 14
Discovering the Bible (KS3/4) Why is the Bible important to Christians? How is the Bible used in public and private worship? Why is the Bible interpreted in different ways? What is in the Bible? Students will have an opportunity to explore all of these questions in this workshop. Learning objectives Students will look at the impact the Bible has upon the everyday lives of Christians and how they understand and use it in different ways. (AT1) Students will question and discuss issues raised by the study of the Bible and express views about how these ideas could make a difference to their own and others beliefs. (AT2) Page 5 of 14
Faith in Art (KS3/4) Throughout history the events of the Bible have been portrayed in many differing pieces of art work. Students will have an opportunity to study a variety of these in a trail around the Cathedral whilst considering the faith which helped stimulate these, giving them an understanding of how such art was made and why. Learning objectives Students will understand and explore what religious art is and examples seen at Guildford Cathedral. (AT1) Students will reflect on the impact the art has on Christians, themselves and others. (AT2) Page 6 of 14
Interviews Students will be given a unique opportunity to interview a member or members of the Cathedral clergy. Discussion topics could include: Christian perspectives on ethics and world issues: Christian beliefs about God The role of the Cathedral in the local and global community The Christian contribution to interfaith dialogue The importance of social justice to Christians A selection of questions should be provided from your students prior to your visit. Question Time This event is a unique opportunity enabling sixth form students to debate with a panellist of religious, political, scientific and high profile public figures across a diverse range of subjects. It is based on the BBC s Question Time programme and will allow students to ask the panel their own questions on ethical, environmental, social and current affairs. Page 8 of 14
Religious Studies Days (/5) For the older students, each term the Cathedral will be hosting a GSCE or A level study day. There will be an introductory session, after which students will take part in an interactive ice breaker to get to know the participants from other schools. The day will be used to learn about and discuss issues on different themes based on the examination course requirements. These may include: Medical Ethics, Suffering and Evil The Sanctity of life The Existence of God The day will finish with a lively Q & A session with a member of the Cathedral clergy or guest lecturer. Signs and Symbols (KS3/4) A trail around the Cathedral that will introduce students to the significance of the church and the importance of symbols in worship. Students will explore the meaning and origin of the different symbols. Learning objectives Students will identify key Christian symbols and their meanings. (AT1) Students will identify similarities and differences between Christian symbols and other religions. (AT1) Students will reflect on the importance of each symbol for their own and others views. The Cathedral (KS3/4) Students will spend time looking at how Christians worship in the Cathedral and how this worship brings them closer to God, influencing the way they live. They will explore the design, features and artefacts of the Cathedral and consider forms of worship, Christian symbolism and the role of people within the Cathedral community. Learning objectives Students will learn about the role of the Cathedral in the local community and the importance of the Cathedral on a more global scale. (AT1) Students will reflect on the impact the Cathedral has on their own and others life and beliefs. (AT2) Page 11 of 14
The Life of Jesus (KS3) Students will consider the key events in Jesus life and ministry and how this influences Christian beliefs and practices. They will explore the question Is Jesus who He said He was? through studying the four gospels and the titles given to Him, for example: Son of Man, Messiah, Lord Learning objectives Students will explain the different ways in which Christians view Jesus identity using biblical and historical evidence. (AT1) Students will use evidence and personal interpretations to refine and express personal views of Jesus identity. (AT2) Page 12 of 14
