The Holy Land In the footsteps of Jesus A visit to the Holy Land is a remarkable and life changing experience for every Christian. The opportunity to walk in Jesus footsteps, and to learn of the lives of today s Christians in Palestine and Israel offers profound new insights into the content and meaning of the Bible. This pilgrimage has been planned with certain key principles. First of all we experience the breadth that the land has to offer from Beersheba in the south to the slope of Mount Hermon in the north. We not only cover places in the life of Christ but many of the Old Testament heroes Abraham, Gideon and Samson, David, Elijah to mention but a few. Then, by using background study materials and the travel time to explain the places we visit, to give the maximum time at each site to observe and photograph rather than stand listening to a guide. Finally as this is a Christian pilgrimage we will focus on Christians from all communities not on nationalism. We will get some sense of some remarkable ministries carried out often living under harsh and unjust restrictions that are imposed on our brothers and sisters in Christ. I have led pilgrimages before but my brother, Bishop John Hayden, has vast experience and has written many helpful resources. The pilgrimage is timed to be at the same time as his and we will share the same hotels and itinerary. Both of us will have small groups of about twenty people so when we do things together it will not be too large. I hope you will be able to come. It will be a wonderful experience Do invite others who may be interested. Please contact me at davidf.hayden@gmail.com or on 01502 450022 if you have any questions. David Hayden Lightline Pilgrimages support the work of Friends of The Holy Land and a contribution is made on behalf of each and every pilgrim that travels to the Holy Land

Day 3, Wednesday 7 November CAESAREA MARITIMA - ACRE - TIBERIAS This morning we leave Ashdod and drive to the Roman and Crusader city of Caesarea Maritima to view the ancient harbour, fortifications, twin water aqueducts and reassembled theatre. It is a place of great significance as it was here that Peter baptized the first gentile, Cornelius and where Paul was imprisoned for almost two years. We continue north to Mount Carmel where Elijah confronted the priests of Baal (1 Kings 18:20). We drive to Acre with its imposing extensive underground Crusader ruins (Knights Halls), many khans, bazaar and bathhouse and if time allows a short visit to Safed (the city set on a hill with its ancient synagogues) before driving to our hotel in Tiberias for a three night stay. Day 4, Thursday 8 November MT TABOR - NAZARETH - CAPERNAUM Today we leave after an early breakfast and drive to Mount Tabor to visit the traditional

Day 4 continued site of the Transfiguration. We make a short photo stop visit to Nain (Luke 7:11-17). Driving south again we visit the site of Korazin (Mt.11:20) and on to the Church of St Peter (John 21) and Tabgha church Day 6, Saturday 10 November SAMARIA - BAPTISMAL SITE - DEAD SEA This morning we leave Galilee and drive south into the West Bank visiting the site of Samaria, the capital of the northern kingdom from 880 BC until its fall in 722 BC. Nearby are the ruins of Shechem (Judges 9 et al) and Jacob s well set between Mounts Ebal and Gerizim (Joshua 8:33). If possible we may visit a Samaritan monastery in Nablus where this sect still continues its worship dating back from before the time of Christ.

Day 6 continued We then drop down into the Jordan valley and visit Jericho (Joshua 6 & Luke 19) before a visit to the baptismal site and then drive by the Dead Sea before reaching our hotel on the shores of the Dead Sea where we can swim in their pool before dinner. Overnight stay by the Dead Sea. Day 7, Sunday 11 November DEAD SEA - BETHANY - JERUSALEM After an early morning float in the Dead Sea and late breakfast we visit the site of Qumran (Dead Sea Scrolls), then view St George s Monastery from the old road. We drive to Bethany with the house of Mary and Martha and on to Jerusalem over Mt Scopus where we stop for a fine view of the city. After checking in at our hotel we will attend Christ Church for our Sunday service. During our time in Jerusalem we will hear about the work among the peoples of the Holy Land. Dinner and overnight stay in Jerusalem. Day 8, Monday 12 November JERUSALEM OLD CITY We make an early start (7.30am) and visit the City of David. This contains some of the latest excavations including the Royal Quarter, Nehemiah s wall, the Warren shaft. It is possible to wade through the water (please bring suitable clothes and footwear) using Hezekiah s tunnel (2 Chron.32) to the Pool of Siloam (John 9:7) or take a dry Canaanite tunnel. At Siloam we can take the 650 metre long drainage channel that runs up to the temple walls and was used as a secret escape route in the siege of Jerusalem AD70. Those who prefer can stay over ground as we then visit the Temple Mount Excavations and Davidson centre with its wealth of discoveries and visual presentations. At 12.30pm the Temple Mount may open for one hour and give time to visit the area containing the Dome of the Rock and El Aksa. We then take a break for lunch in the Jewish Quarter. The guide will lead the group calling in at the traditional places Lithostratus, and the Stations of the Cross to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. (If the queue for the Tomb is long a visit can be made early on the last morning.) Lunch at nearby Christ Church the Anglican centre for work among the Jewish people.
