Section 2. Comprehension Read the following and answer the questions below. (30 marks) All the students at Pisa University went to the city s lovely cathedral, and they all saw the swinging lamp. Only one of them noticed that each swing took the same time, no matter how far it went. He checked his observation not with a watch, for he did not carry one, but with that human clock called the pulse. Then he went home and experimented with a piece of metal tied on a piece of string. Big swings and small swings, they all took the same time. What a wonderful means, he thought, of measuring time! It is the method used in grandfather clocks today. The student Galileo Galilei, had invented the pendulum. The famous Leaning Tower of the cathedral at Pisa was already leaning in Galileo s time, nearly four hundred years ago. It could have been built for a demonstration of one of Galileo s most remarkable theories that if two objects of unequal weight were dropped at the same moment from the same height they would hit the ground at the same time. The famous Greek philosopher Aristotle had said the heavier object would strike the ground first, and almost everyone believed him. Galileo, now a professor at Pisa University, was criticized for daring to doubt. So, before a great crowd of people he climbed to the top of the Leaning Tower and put the issue to the test. Sure enough, objects of unequal weight landed simultaneously below. About twenty years later, after making more important scientific discoveries, Galileo heard a rumour about the invention of a telescope in Holland. He could not find out any details, but he applied his optical knowledge and, after some trial and error, designed and made a telescope. He used it to look at the moon and the stars. His discoveries in the heavens, however, led him to trouble with the church. Another scientist, a Pole named Nicolaus Copernicus, had already astonished the world with his theory that the earth revolved round the sun. Galileo proved that the Copernican theory was true. His enemies accused him of refusing the Scriptures. He denied the charge, and went to Rome to see the Pope. The audience was a friendly one, but the Pope said that the Copernican theory was considered contrary to Scripture and warned Galileo not to hold or defend such doctrines. The church had decided that the sun revolved round the earth. Eighty years later, Galileo returned to Rome and tried to convert the new Pope to the Copernican theory. The Pope gave him six audiences and listened to him with interest and enjoyment, but was unconvinced. After another eight years Galileo published his theory of the universe. Not only did his book restate the Copernican doctrine but it was also thought to ridicule the Pope. 1. Which university did Galileo attend as a student? 2. Where did he see the hanging lamp? 3. What surprised him about the lamp? 4. Who was Aristotle? Page 4 of 6

5. Why did Galileo disagree with him?.. 6. What experiment did Galileo do to prove Aristotle was wrong?... 7. Where was the telescope invented?.. 8. What was the nationality of Copernicus.. 9. What discovery did he make?..... 10. Whom did Galileo try to convince that Copernicus was right?.. 11. Why did Galileo s discussion about the heavens lead him to trouble with the church........ 12. What was the opinion of the church about the earth and the sun at that time?........ 13. Do you think Galileo was a great scientist? Why?...... Page 5 of 6
