Enjoying God s Fellowship Sermon In His Own Language Pastor Glenn Parkinson Sermon text: Acts 2:1-21 1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God. 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does this mean? 13 But others mocking said, They are filled with new wine. 14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: 17 And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; 18 even on my male servants and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy. 19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke; 20 the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day. 21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Offertory Lord, Speak to Me That I May Speak Lord, speak to me that I may speak in living echoes of your tone; as you have sought, so let me seek your err-ing children lost and lone. O teach me, Lord, that I may teach the precious things you do impart; and wing my words, that they may reach the hidden depths of many a heart. O fill me with your fullness, Lord, until my very heart o er flow in kindling thought and glowing word your love to tell, your praise to show. O use me, Lord, use even me, just as you will and when and where; until your blessed face I see, your rest, your joy, your glory share. Frances R. Havergal, 1872 Robert Schumann, 1839 8
Gathering Song My Hope is Built on Nothing Less My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus name. Chorus On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand. When darkness veils His lovely face, I rest on His unchanging grace; In ev ry high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil. His oath, His covenant, His blood, support me in the whelming flood; When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay. When He shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in Him be found; Dressed in His righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne. He is exalted, forever exalted, And I will praise His name! He is the Lord; Forever His truth shall reign. Heaven and earth Rejoice in His holy name. He is exalted, the King is exalted on high. Sending Song We Beseech Thee Jesus, with Thy Church abide, Be her Savior, Lord, and Guide, While on earth her faith is tried: We beseech Thee. All her fettered pow rs release, Bid our strife and envy cease, Grant the heavenly gift of peace: We beseech Thee. Chorus May she guide the poor and blind, Seek the lost until she find, And the broken hearted bind: We beseech Thee. May she one in doctrine be, One in truth and charity, Winning all to faith in Thee: We beseech Thee. May her lamp of truth be bright, Bid her bear a loft its light. Through the realms of darkest night: We beseech Thee. May her guides Thy people feed, Shepherds of the flock indeed, Ready, where thou call st, to lead: We beseech Thee. May she holy triumphs win, Over throw the hosts of sin, Gather all the nations in: We beseech Thee. Chorus May we guide the poor and blind, Seek the lost until we find, And the broken hearted bind: We beseech Thee. Thomas Benson Pollock The New Ancients 12
The Lord s Supper The Lord s Supper is one of two sacraments commanded by Christ and entrusted to his church (the other being Baptism). It portrays the gospel in a tangible way. Distributing bread and wine pictures the broken body and shed blood of Jesus freely offered for the forgiveness of sin and the transformation of our character. Eating those elements illustrates the faith that embraces Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. What s the Lord s Supper for? Renewing our faith in God s goodness and grace. Grasping the freedom God offers to live like Jesus, reconcile conflicts and find power for service. Who is the Lord s Supper for? Members in good standing of any church that faithfully teaches the gospel, and who long for fellowship with Christ today. Children may partake in communion once they have confessed their own faith publicly before the congregation. Until then, be sure to include your children in the sacrament by reminding them what you believe and letting them accompany you to the Table. And remember that you are free to take the elements at the front of the sanctuary, where you could quietly gather your family together to ask God for his blessing. Reflection & Preparation Reflection: Acts 2:1-21 This Week: Quote Do you realize how this universal call magnifies the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ? Do you see how willing Christ is to save sinners? He calls sinners to Himself to receive His rest with this promise: Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Christ calls sinners to Himself because He alone is the willing Savior not because of our good works, our righteousness, or anything else. (Joel Beeke and Mark Jones, A Puritan Theology: Doctrine for Life, pg. 509) Gen. 12:1-4 Acts 10:34-48 Galatians 3:6-9 Go, Blessed to be a Blessing God Shows No Partiality God Would Justify the Gentiles by Faith Prayer: Father, every good and perfect gift comes from You; and you have given no greater gift to us than Your own Son Jesus Christ. We ask, Holy Spirit, make us more willing to make Christ known, open the hearts of sinners to His gospel, and show us how to lead people to Him that Christ, the Savior of sinners everywhere, may be glorified; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. In Preparation for Sunday: Matthew 28:16-20 14
