From Donnie s Desk; Summer is here and in full swing! I love seeing our beautiful mountain town bustling with energy and people during these months! We are indeed blessed to live in this wonderful town and to enjoy the season and beauty of God s creation! Summer is busy here at HSBC as well! And the beauty of God s work in our church and in our lives is even more amazing than the beauty of the mountains that surround us! I am so thankful for Pete and the volunteers who work with our Student Ministries. Youth Camp was a life changing experience for many of our students and leaders. What a joy to watch by video the baptism of Garrett Nelson this past Sunday. This is why we do what we do to see children, students and adults come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. So, please be in prayer for our students and leaders as they head out for a mission adventure this month. They will be spending a week in Bradenton, FL working in a variety of mission stations, meeting needs and sharing the gospel message. The other big event coming up in July is VBS! Research as well as experience tells us that VBS is the single most effective outreach opportunity we have for reaching children and families. It is one of the few programs any church provides that has almost universal appeal and positive memories and feelings attached to it. I think most of us have indelible childhood memories associated with VBS! For me the smell of Elmer s Glue and the sight of popsicle sticks takes me back to my childhood immediately! My point in all of this VBS is important! It is vital! It is necessary! And it is a joy and privilege to serve and touch the lives of children with the hope and truth of who Jesus is! So please help us! Sign up to serve and then come on and get ready to have a blast investing a few hours in the lives of children.a few hours that very well may have an eternal impact on some lives! We are in the process of looking to the Fall and planning for a few big opportunities for us. One of the things we have discussed as Deacon s and Staff is the possibility of Friend Day Invite Your One We are planning on connecting it with a Fall Revival in September. Friend Day has been done very successfully here at HSBC in the past and we feel that it might be time to launch another! It has been years since we have held a Revival! I think the timing is right! So keep your ears and eyes open for more information as we get closer! Of course we are working hard at collections for Operation Christmas Child and planning for a huge packing party in October or November! And we might even have a very special concert lined up for October! So much is happening and God is moving in some wonderful ways! Sharon and I love y all and we are excited about the days ahead! Blessings, Donnie

Temptation is a tricky thing - it always comes with a catch waiting to trip us up. But with temptation all around us, how do we avoid getting caught in its trap? In this series, we ll find that, although there may be a catch to every temptation, there s also always a way out. away technology and kicking kids outside. Sometimes, love means simply saying no. And sometimes, love looks like this... The Battle of the Bored By Holly Crawshaw School s been out for fifteen minutes... The bus is just pulling out of your neighborhood... PARENT: If you wait until [YOUR NEXT FREE TIME] o clock, I ll hang out with you. Until then, you need to figure out something to do on your own. And our signature on that last report card hasn t even dried yet... When from the bowels of their gadget/toy/book-infested bedroom, you hear the dreaded words: I M BORED! It never fails, right? Summer shows up, and with it, our kids ability to be entertained for longer than five minutes at a time. They haven t had this much trouble self-soothing since they were in diapers! In our minds, summer is an ethereal time sand, sun, pools, breezes filled with memories of late nights, lightning bugs, and laughter. When in reality, summer can feel like a circus act with you, on a unicycle, balancing your own responsibilities on your forehead while simultaneously juggling your kids wants and needs like balls of fire. PARENT: Have you checked the chore chart? Here are 3 things you can do to help our family. (PS Even toddlers can and in my opinion, should do chores!) PARENT: Go outside for the next hour. Exercise, count the cars that drive by, find shapes in the clouds, take a walk, sit on the porch. PARENT: Have you read a book lately? Go read (or look at pictures) for the next 30 minutes. Then I want to hear what you read/saw. PARENT: Go and do 3 kind and/or generous things for other people. Then, come back and tell me what you did and how it went. Can I tell you a secret? (I wish it weren t such a secret. I wish someone had told me this years ago.) Here it is... it is not your job to save your kid from boredom. It s not! It s also not your job to entertain your kid. It s also not your job to make your kid happy. (But those are blog posts for another day!) It is your job to love your kid. Or, how about this? PARENT: [Silence.] *Shrugs* That sounds like your problem. *Goes back to doing item #4 of items #1 #483984 on the todo list* And sometimes, love means saying no. Love means prompting kids to use their creativity. Sometimes, love means taking What about your family? How do you wage war against the battle with boredom?
