MARK YOUR CALENDAR Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Blessings for a holy and happy 2016! The New Year brings St. John s new challenges and opportunities after 150 years of ministry in the heart of downtown Sharon. Some of these opportunities will come as we celebrate the 150th anniversary. Our upcoming events are excellent times to invite friends, neighbors and others to church, and we will be extending invitations to different sectors of the community throughout the next year to be recognized for their work and receive a special blessing. Our goal is to have one focused event each month through All Saints Day in November, 2016. Last December was our kick-off, January will be an event focused on the downtown community, February will be a Valentine s Day event for Veterans, and March will be Holy Week and Easter. Other days are still in the organizational phases. If you have ideas, please let me know! We are preparing to restart a weekday service in February, and to combine that service with a parish dinner and other activities. While we are still working out details, the vestry is looking at starting after work on Wednesdays with a worship service that will include music and a message, moving to dinner that will be more organized than just a potluck, and allow time afterwards for events like choir rehearsal, new member classes, Bible study, or The 2016 Annual Meeting will be held on Sunday, January 24 at 9am in Allen Hall. Your presence is needed! Anniversary, continued from page 8 VALENTINE S DAY RECOGNITION OF VETERANS: One important past ministry of St. John s was serving as a USO Center for soldiers from Fort Reynolds who were about to ship out during WWII. In recognition of the dances and other events offered at St. John s, we will be planning a special Sunday morning service and reception on February 14th for veterans. If you are interested in helping with this event, please contact Jane Trambley (724-699- 3723). SAVE THE DATE SUNDAY AFTERNOON SEPTEMBER 18TH: One of the major celebrations of our 150th Anniversary will take place in the afternoon of September 18th. Bishop Sean will join us as we invite brothers and sisters from other churches in our Diocese and in our community to celebrate with us. 1 St. John s Episcopal Church Sharon, Pennsylvania 724.347.4501 Phone stjohns@stjohnssharon.org www.stjohnssharon.org 10

Thank You......to the Adult choir of St. John s for all their diligence in preparing for the Christmas Eve services this year. We trust that you were blessed through their hard work and ministry....to musicians: Louis D Angelo, Brittanie Bell, Kevin Schneider, Nick Lakatos, Conner Williams, for sharing their musical gifts with us at the 11 PM Christmas Eve Service....to Marilyn Gozik and Rhonda Koborie for decorating the church for the Christmas Eve services....to the folks that made a donation of some kind to Winterfest last month. We also appreciate everyone that helped with the baking and working the day of Winterfest. Thanks for being a part of Winterfest....to the folks that contributed to Church Periodical Club and Miles of Pennies in 2015. other activities. I would like to know what you would like as we experiment a bit with new church night activities. We also know that we need to have a number of conversations about how particular ministry areas are changing, as well as our overall strategy for continuing growth and development. We plan to schedule most of those meetings on Monday evenings at 7:00pm beginning in mid-january. This time has been when the vestry has met, and will allow us to move forward deliberately without overwhelming people with too many meetings at the same time. One of the first meetings scheduled is our next 150th Anniversary Committee meeting on 1/25. I also hope we will see you at our Annual Meeting between services on January 24. We will be electing vestry members, reviewing the budget, and hearing about some of the challenges and opportunities facing us over the next year. Peace, Adam A short, but very heartfelt THANK YOU to all the folks who came out on both days to help with Kettle Korn, to Lisa & Juan Zamora for the use of their garage, and also, to everyone who helped with the 150th Kickoff Breakfast. I am always so appreciative of the way everyone is willing to lend a hand! Many hands make light work is one of my favorite phrases, and it s certainly a truism here at St. John s. Laura Peretic Dates to Remember in January: Friday, January 8th: please have all articles for the Annual meeting submitted. Monday, January 19th: the parish office will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Sunday, January 24th: 9am, Annual Meeting in Allen Hall. House Group I will meet on Saturday, January 10th at 2pm. We ll be meeting at the home of Ron and Madge Tamber, 214 S. From Our Music Director, Ron Gracilla For many folks, now that Christmas and New Years has passed, the time of celebration is over. We have thanked all the efforts of friends, family, musicians, staff and clergy for offering a great experience... but then hunker down for a long slog through the inevitable ice, snow and cold of Winter. Some think, Why bother to leave the house?. But in January, we in the Episcopal Church are STILL CELEBRATING. That s right. Not only do we enjoy the last Sunday after Christmas, but also the Season of Epiphany where we celebrate the manifestation of God in the form of Jesus Christ. Through the visit of the Three Wise Men, Jesus Baptism, the Wedding Miracle of water transformed into wine, we are called to also proclaim the good news to all, especially the poor, the suffering, the lonely, the disabled, and the oppressed. That s right, we are called to reach out to all in our own hometown. Who do you know that could use the uplifting power of the Good News of Jesus? Maybe you can welcome them and warm them up by sharing our Sunday worship filled with hymns, songs and anthems filled with hope and celebration. Peace, Ron Gracilla February 2016 Newsletter Deadline: The deadline to submit articles for the February 2016 newsletter is Friday, January 16. Please send articles to the church at: stjohns@stjohnssharon.org BLESSING OF DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY: We are planning a celebration at 10:00am on Sunday, January 17th, followed by a reception, for our downtown community. We will be inviting our neighboring business owners and others to join us for this service and blessings. Anniversary, continued on page 10 3 St. John s Episcopal Church Sharon, Pennsylvania 724.347.4501 Phone stjohns@stjohnssharon.org www.stjohnssharon.org 8

KICK-OFF: On December 14, 2015, St. John s kicked off our 150th Anniversary Celebration with a brunch between services and a special guest, Father Doug Dayton. Fr. Doug shared a message with us and sang a version of the 23rd Psalm. More than 75 people joined us for brunch, where Father Adam presented certificates thanking 36 people for their work at cleaning, maintain, renovating, or beautifying our facilities. Those certificates contained the following prayer, written by Junior Warden Bob Verholek: Dear Lord, Anniversary Events I thank you for the privilege you have given and the trust you have that you allow me to help care for the group of buildings know as St. John s. I know these buildings are not mine, but they are yours, and I am simply one of the many that have come before me and the many that will come after me that will care for this place. I thank you for providing the resources needed and I also thank you for the talents you have given me that help me to perform my duties. Please guide me so that I can help keep these buildings beautiful and welcoming and dry and warm so they will always be a safe shelter to whomever should come in. Also, most importantly, help me to do what I can to keep St. John s well maintained so it can be used to bring your Word and do your work in the world. These things I pray in the name of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen All attending the service received a historic St. John s Christmas ornament, courtesy of Randy and Jacque Beck.
