Amoris Laetitia, on love in the family continued 30. Every family should look to the icon of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Its daily life had its share of burdens and even nightmares, as when they met with Herod s implacable violence. This last was an experience that, sad to say, continues to afflict the many refugee families who in our day feel rejected and helpless. Like the Magi, our families are invited to contemplate the Child and his Mother, to bow down and worship him (cf. Mt 2:11). Like Mary, they are asked to face their family s challenges with courage and serenity, in good times and bad, and to keep in their heart the great things which God has done (cf. Lk 2:19, 51). The treasury of Mary s heart also contains the experiences of every family, which she cherishes. For this reason, she can help us understand the meaning of these experiences and to hear the message God wishes to communicate through the life of our families. CHAPTER TWO THE EXPERIENCES AND CHALLENGES OF FAMILIES The welfare of the family is decisive for the future of the world and that of the Church. Countless studies have been made of marriage and the family, their current problems and challenges. We do well to focus on concrete realities, since the call and the demands of the Spirit resound in the events of history, and through these the Church can also be guided to a more profound understanding of the inexhaustible mystery of marriage and the family.8 I will not attempt here to present all that might be said about the family today. Nonetheless, because the Synod Fathers examined the situation of families worldwide, I consider it fitting to take up some of their pastoral insights, along with concerns derived from my own experience.

You are invited to spend at least one hour of devotion with Our Lord during this time of exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. In the brochure How To Make A Holy Hour Rev. Kosicki, CSB tells us that all you have to do is be present to the ONE who is present to you. He says that being present bodily is a first step but we also try to be present with our hearts. This means a loving awareness of WHO is present. It is in this silent presence that the Lord speaks to us. Be still and know that I am God. Ps. 46 In her Diary St. Maria Faustina tells us: Silence is so powerful that it reaches the throne of God. Silence is His language-living and powerful. (Diary, 888) One may also read Scripture, pray or recite the Rosary or Chaplet of Divine Mercy.

OCTOBER 2016 Supporting those entering the priesthood The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. (Luke 4:18) In the Archdiocese of Toronto, we are fortunate to have priests in most of our parishes, in some cases supported by an associate pastor and/or a Deacon. Retired clergy often help out by celebrating Mass when there is a need for assistance. In many parts of the world, there is not always a priest available to say Mass each weekend. In some Dioceses in India or Africa, parishes have many mission churches that they visit on a regular basis, but not necessarily every week. Matthew Gunnarson, a second year student at St. Augustine s Seminary, notes This year and last I had the privilege of speaking at parishes during the Sunday Masses about ShareLife. I told them we would not be able to run the seminary without your generous support of St. Augustine's. This was my way of saying thank you to ShareLife. I truly appreciate all you do for us. Your support of ShareLife is helping to educate seminarians and candidates for the Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Toronto, who will one day carry out their ministry parishes. Currently, there are 65 seminarians and students in formation either at St. Augustine s Seminary or Serra House, with another 22 individuals participating in the Diaconate program. Thank you for providing for the education of future clergy in our archdiocese!
