At that time, some people knew that Jesus was coming. This is how they knew. 1

The story began with the world s first family. Adam and Eve lived in God s garden and they ate the fruit from the tree that God had told them not to eat. By disobeying God, sin filled their hearts. But God gave them a reason to still trust in Him. He said, One of the woman s children will crush the serpent s (or Satan s) head. God was telling them of His plan to send His Son into the world to save His people from their sins. 2

Later, God said to Abraham, Go to the land I will give you and I will give you a son, and through your family I will bless the whole world. Abraham believed God, and later Isaac was born. God was telling him of His plan to send His Son into the world to save His people from their sins. 3

Much later, Ahaz was king over God s people. He and God s people were frightened by their enemies. God said to the prophet Isaiah, Go to the King and say, Trust in God and you will do well. He will save you from your enemies. But King Ahaz would not trust God. 4

However, God gave King Ahaz this sign: a baby will be born who will be called God with us. By the time this baby has grown to be a boy, your enemies will be gone. God was also showing His people that one day He would send them a baby who really was God with us. 5

At another time, God sent the prophet Micah with a message to His people saying, A ruler will be born in Bethlehem One who is from the beginning. In this story, and many others, God was preparing His people for His Son to come. 6

LUKE 1:5-56 THE ANGEL VISITS ZECHARIAH AND MARY File no. 101 God did not speak to His people during the four hundred years between the Old Testament and the New Testament. His people would go to the temple to hear God s word, make their sacrifices and pray. 1

Then one day when Zechariah, a priest, went into the temple to burn incense, an angel of the Lord appeared to him. Zechariah was afraid. Don t be afraid, said the angel, I have come to tell you that your prayer has been answered. Your wife will have a son, and you will name him John. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit and he will make people ready for the Lord. Zechariah could not believe him. He thought that he and his wife were too old to have children. You don t believe me, said the angel. I am Gabriel and I stand in God s presence. God has sent me to tell you this good news. You will not be able to speak until your baby is born. 2

God s people were outside, waiting for Zechariah to come out. They were wondering why he was taking so long. When he did come, he could not speak to them. The people realised that he had seen a vision. Zechariah finished his work at the temple and went home. 3

Some time later Elizabeth, Zechariah s wife, was going to have a baby. God had heard their prayer for Israel. He was giving them a child who would prepare the way for Christ s coming. 4

Several months later God sent the angel Gabriel to speak to Mary. He said, The Lord has blessed you and is with you. What does this mean? Mary wondered. Don t be afraid, said the angel. You will have a son and you will call Him Jesus. God will give Him the throne of His father David and He will rule over God s people forever. How can this happen? asked Mary The Holy Spirit will come upon you. said the angel. The child born to you will be holy. He will be called the Son of God. Mary said, I am the Lord s servant. Let this happen to me just as you say. 5

The angel also told Mary that her cousin, Elizabeth, was going to have a baby. She was very old, but nothing was too hard for God. Straight away Mary went to Elizabeth s home in the hill country. She called out when she got there. Elizabeth felt her baby jump inside of her when she heard Mary s call. She was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out, Blessed are you, Mary, among women. Blessed is the baby you carry. Why does the mother of my Lord come to visit me? 6

Mary was also filled with joy and sang a song to the Lord. My soul praises the Lord. God has been kind to me. God gives mercy to those who worship Him. God has done what He promised to Abraham. 7

LUKE 1: 57 80 ELIZABETH S BABY: JOHN THE BAPTIST File no. 102 Zechariah had not been able to talk for a long time. Do you remember why? He thought he and Elizabeth were too old to have children. He did not believe the angel when the angel said, Your wife will have a baby son. 1

Then the day came when this special baby was born and everyone was very happy. 2

Some days later it was time to give the baby a name, but Zechariah still could not speak. Their friends said, Zechariah should be his name just like his father. Elizabeth knew it was not to be Zechariah. The angel had told her husband to call him John. So Elizabeth said, His name will be John. Their friends did not understand. They said, No one in your family has a name like that! 3

They went to Zechariah and asked him, What are you going to call your son? Zechariah asked for something to write on. He wrote, His name is John. Immediately, he could speak again. Everyone was amazed when they heard him speak. They thought, What will this child be? The Lord is with him. 4

Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and praised God. He said, God has remembered His promise to Abraham. This child will make His people ready for God s coming. He will tell them that they will be saved by having their sins forgiven. 5

John grew up to be a strong man ready for God's work. He was sent to tell everyone to repent from their wickedness and be ready to listen to God s Son. 6

MATTHEW 1:18 25 & LUKE 2:1 20 THE BIRTH OF JESUS AND VISIT OF THE SHEPHERDS File no. 103 An angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream and said, Don t be afraid to take Mary to be your wife. The baby she will have is God s Son. His name is to be Jesus for He will save His people from their sins. 1

Before Jesus was born, Mary and Joseph had to go to Bethlehem to put their names on a register. Other people had to go there too. Mary rode on the donkey and Joseph walked. 2

When they arrived in Bethlehem, they asked at all of the Inns for a place to stay. All of the Inns were full. Then one Innkeeper said, You can stay in my stable. 3

Mary and Joseph were very tired, and they were glad to rest in the stable. Then the time came and Mary s baby was born. She wrapped Him snugly and laid Him in the manger. 4

That night, God sent an angel to tell some shepherds, that His Son had been born. The shepherds were looking after their sheep when they saw a bright light. It was the glory of the Lord shining around them. At first the shepherds were afraid. Then the angel spoke to them saying, 'Don t be afraid. Today your Saviour was born in David's town. He is Christ, the Lord. 'You will find the baby wrapped in cloth and lying in a manger.' 5

Then a large group of angels sang and praised God, saying, 'Glory to God in heaven, and on earth let there be peace to the people who please God.' 6

The angels went back to heaven and all was quiet. The shepherds went straight away to Bethlehem and found the baby lying in a manger. 7

On their way back to their sheep the shepherds praised God, and thanked Him for sending His Son. 8

Bible Stories for Young Children part of a curriculum prepared for young children SIMEON AND ANNA: THE BABY IN THE TEMPLE by Chris Thorpe & people from Coromandel Baptist Church Illustrated by Kay Kammermann Website: www.corobaptist.org.au The following pages may be copied if they are unchanged, acknowledged and not used for profit 2008 Coromandel Baptist Church

LUKE 2:21 40 SIMEON AND ANNA: THE BABY IN THE TEMPLE File no. 104 When Mary s baby was eight days old they gave Him the name of Jesus. The angel had told Mary and Joseph to give Him this name. 1

A little later Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple to give Him to the Lord. They also took two doves for a sacrifice. 2

At the temple lived an old prophet. His name was Simeon. God had said to him, You will not die until you have seen the Lord s Messiah. He was really keen to see the One God was sending. 3

The Holy Spirit guided Simeon into the temple, at the same time Mary and Joseph were bringing Jesus to the temple. 4

When Simeon saw the baby he took Him in his arms. He praised God, saying You can let me die in peace now. I have seen the Messiah, the One who will give salvation to those who believe. Mary and Joseph were amazed. Simeon blessed Mary and Joseph and said, Some people will believe in Jesus and be saved. Some people will not believe. 5

Anna, a prophetess, who came to the temple every day to worship God, was also waiting for the promised Messiah to come. When she saw baby Jesus, God s Son, she was so happy, she praised God and told everyone that He was the promised Messiah. 6

Bible Stories for Young Children part of a curriculum prepared for young children THE WISE MEN WORSHIP JESUS by Chris Thorpe & people from Coromandel Baptist Church Illustrated by Kay Kammermann Website: www.corobaptist.org.au The following pages may be copied if they are unchanged, acknowledged and not used for profit 2008 Coromandel Baptist Church

MATTHEW 2:1 23 THE WISE MEN WORSHIP JESUS File no. 105 When the wise men from the East saw a star in the sky they said, A new king must be born. I wonder where? 1

So they packed their camels and travelled to Jerusalem. They asked people, Where is the baby, the One born to be king of the Jews? 2

In Jerusalem, Herod was the king. He did not want another king around. He called the priests and asked, Where is the Messiah to be born? The Priests found the answer in the Old Testament and said to the king, He will be born in Bethlehem. 3

So Herod called in the wise men and asked, How long ago did you see the star? Then he said, Go and find this child, and come back and tell me. He pretended that he wanted to worship the king/messiah. 4

As the wise men started going towards Bethlehem the star appeared again. It guided them all the way to where Jesus was. When the wise men saw Jesus they worshipped Him and gave Him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. 5

God knew that Herod wanted to kill His Son. So He said to the wise men in a dream, Don t go back and tell Herod. The wise men went home another way. 6

That night, Joseph had a dream. God said to him, Get up and go straight away to Egypt. Take Jesus and Mary with you. Herod will be looking for Jesus so that he can kill Him. Stay away until I tell you to come back. So in the middle of the night they got up and set out for Egypt. 7

When Herod realised that the wise men had tricked him, he was angry. He gave an order for all the children less than two years old to be killed. 8

After Herod died, the Lord came to Joseph in a dream and said, Take Jesus and His mother back to the land of Israel. Those who wanted to kill Him have died. Joseph took Mary and Jesus back to Israel and God lead him to Nazareth and they lived there. 9
