Master Plannng conssts of decdng what the communty wshes to become or can become wth due consderaton of geoaprl 6th meetng-t s to be an mportant one for us. f necessary the large McMorran Hall wll be rented to accomodate everyone. f your neghbour s a member, make sure he or she attends, f not a member, ask them to fll out an applcaton form and become one. All Cordova Bay and adjacent dstrct resdents should _now be fully aware of the value of the Hall planned for the Bay. Ourselves, our chldren, all of us, wll have the beneft and use of ths buldng. We don't have to be told thlt when our youngsters are busy wth Cubs, Brownes, graphcal. and othe~ features whch may help or hmder the deal. Ths should be no msty dream that t s hoped wll somehow take the form at some ndetermnate tme n the future, but a functonally sensble layout aganst whch every spec-' fc proposal to change the physcal aspects of the communty can be quckly and easly tested to see f t consttutes a step n the desred drecton. Urban plannng councls have problems consstng of slum and blght clearance, traffc congeston etc., but the man problem n suburbs s to control or plan development n order that the evls now present n towns and ctes do not arse. Negatvely, suburbs can be controlled to some extent, by rgd zonng. Postvely, 'L' ',.. JJ,...-. drected by skll and judgment n plannng. Ths means thorough study and analyss of exstng condtons and probabltes, co.nsultaton wth busness, wth present resdents, wth prospectve real estate developers and other nterested partes. Recognton should be gven to the fact that nearly all people wsh to keep regulatons of land use at the lowest possble level that wll safeguard the publ~ welfare. The deal of planners should be a settng wheren the ordnary operatons and aspratons of busness, of home owners and of bulders wll lead to an over-all pattern that s desrable and to the long-run advantage of everybody. Yours sncerely,. Mrs. K. K. John Cordova Bay and Cordova Channel from Brtsh Columba Coast Names by Captan John T. Walbran Sub-Leutenant Qumper of the Spansh Navy, commandng the sloop " Prncess Royal" on an explorng voyage n 1790, gave the name of Puerto de Cordova to the harbour of Esqumalt, and ths name of Cordova, doubtless from ts beng shown n ths neghbourhood on the Spansh charts then n use, was transferred from Esqumalt by the offcers of the Hud- son's Bay Company crca 1842 to the bay named on later Brtsh charts-cormorant Bay, but whch nevertheless has always been known locally as Cordova Bay. The old Spansh name of Cordova was restored by the Geographc Board of Canada n 1903. The channel between Vancouver sland and James sland was named, crca 1859, by the Admralty surveyors, Cordova Channel, from the name Cordova beng used n the vcnty n the early days of the Colony of Vancouver sland. Provncal records show that the Bay was known by the name Cordova on the arrval of H.M. Surveyng Vessels "Herald" and "Pandora" n 1846. The "Herald" was taken n tow by H.M. Steam-Sloop "Cormorant" n the Strat of Juan de Fuca for Vcfora-but the harbour not beng recognzed, the vessels cont.nued on to Hal'O Strat, anchorng n Cordova Bay, June 24, 1846. The next day the "('~>"- morant" towed the "Herald" an d ",,, '...,J,' dora" back to Vctora and they anchored off the harbour, notng Brotche Ledge under the name Buoy Rock, by the buoy on t and the beacons placed on Beacon Hll. J March, 1949 SOCAL NOTES The home of Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Warf was the scene or a very happy occason when Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Heseltne celebrated ther Golden Weddng Annversary. The famly was complete wth all four chldren, :M:rs. W. N. Clark, Mrs. P. G. Warf, Mr. Lloyd Heseltne and Mss Margaret Heseltne and four grandchldren present. Mss Heseltne who s Superntendent of Quesnel General Hosptal, flew d own for the event. Mr. and Mrs. Heseltne came from Yorks, England two years ago and have resded n Cordova Bay snce that tme. Patrca Ann Clark celebrated her seventh brthday recently. SPNDRFT March, 1949 Wth Rod and Gun Under Nt. Kenya BY B. RCKARD A holday n Afrca leaves one wth lttle choce as to the locaton n whch t should be spent; one ether goes to the coast, or makes a safar nto the bush n search of thrlls wth gun or rod. set before you, the enjoyment four people had under the shadow of Mount Kenya. One Sunday mornng-july 5th, 1942, three frends and myself set forth on the begnnng of our trp. The frst stage of our journey was made by tran, whch took us some 300 odd mles towards the northern fronter of Kenya. Our destnaton was the Abedere Mountans lookng r--' up to the splendour of Mount Kenya, t~:'ng some 17,000 feet nto the sky. We were met at the ralhead by a frend of mne, at whose farm we were to spend a few days assemblng our camp equpment and securng natve porters to transport our tents, etc. far up on the mountan slopes. En route from the staton to the farm we watched the vast herds of game on the plans, wth bulgng eyes, and wated for the tme when camp was ptched and we could get after them, wth gun and camera. That nght a hot bath, and blazng fre to st around after supper, are thngs to please the traveller's heart. 'vo days later, after much fuss and. a,sement, our heavy camp equpment was loaded on to an ox cart and we set off. We spent the mornng walkng along the edge of a very deep valley, the mornng was btter, wth mountan msts coverng everythng, and so we were unable to see much of the wld lfe that we knew surrounded us. About noon, we crossed a small plan, and arrved at the edge of a thckly-forrested vapey about 600 feet Delow us. After unpackng the wagon and sortng out packages for the natves to carry down the rest of the way, we set off down the slope followng a game tral. Two of us went ahead wth rfles handy n case of buffalo or rhno, of whch there were many n the dstrct. Nothng, however, dsturbed our descent. On reachng the bottom we came nto a small grassy glade wthn a few yards of a fast flowng rver. t took us the best part of the afternoon gettng tents up and equpment sorted. A nce shady pool under some trees, looked attractve. felt sure some trout were just watng to take my fly. After a strenuous day, an early nght and a good sleep were essental f we were to be up before dawn the followng mornng. Just as the frst streak of lght showed tself over the lp of the valley, two of us went up the rver to report on the game stuaton. John and decded to clmb out 0' the valley and see f we could get some fresh meat for the camp. On reachng the top we came across fresh buffalo tracks and decded to look for them-we spent several hours wthout any luck. We could not return emptyhanded however. On the top of a slght rse spotted three Kongon (large antelope, about the sze of a horse). took a long shot and had the satsfacton of seeng my shot strke home, but the Kongon started off at a great rate, wth us n hot pursut. t took three more shots before fnally brought hm down. The task of cuttng hm up and' transportng the meat back to camp. occuped the remander of the mornng. On returnng to camp, we were pleased to be greeted by the other members of the party wth a fne mess of trout that they had caught n the upper reaches of the rver. The fshng, they told us, was excellent-one had only to cast a fly 'n the stream to have t nstantly struck by a fsh. The fshng durng our stay gave us much pleasure and many good meals. The next day we decded to clmb the mountan n search of bgger game. Wth achng muscles, the followng mornng we reached the bamboos, at an alttude of 9,000 ft. Here, f we were lucky we mght catch a glmpse of that rare and beautful anmal-the BONGO (a large antelope wth a rch reddsh-brown hde, hs hnd quarters strped wth whte bands, and whose long horns are tpped wth whte.) happened to be some way ahead of the party wth my natve tracker, when approachng a small glade notced a large object n the mddle, resemblng a huge rock. On closer examnaton, saw t move. My tracker notced the same movement. and we poth dropped to the ground. carefully looked through the grass, and much to my delght, saw a fne specmen of the Gant Forest Hog... slowly Page 5 rased my rfle and gently squeezed the trgger... That hog must have wondered what ht hm, for he jumped about three feet n the ar, and seemed to land, facng us. He could obvously not decde whether to charge us or make a run for t... he decded the latter, and made a dash for a nearby thcket. dd not want to lose such a fne beast, let hm have a second shot just as he was dsappearng nto a thck clump of bush. knew had ht hm, because suddenly the bushes started to shake n all drectons. After a whle, all was stll... we slowly approached, ready for hm, n case he was stll alve, but the last shot had been the fnal, and he would move no more. As the rest of the party came up, we all took photographs, whle the natves sknned the beast and removed hs head, whch later had mounted. After havng placed the skn and head n a fork of a large tree to prevent any curous wld dog from rppng t to peces, we spent the remander of the mornng lookng for our frend the Bongo, but wthout any luck. After a short rest, and a spot of welcome food, we started back to camp, retrevd. [he- fruts of the m01'm~ '5"""'~!.~""""" on our way. When we were some two mles out of camp, we dsturbed a famly of monkeys, and mmedately all members of the party were busy takng photographs. The famly seemed most unconcerned at our presence and we spent some lttle tme watchng them at ther play. That evenng, our last camp, we sat around a blazng fre wshng that our stay could have been several weeks longer, but alas work always calls. The followng mornng, we packed camp and started the long clmb out of the valley, where the ox wagon and porters awated us. On the way down to the farm we were lucky enough to obtan some wonderful photographs of the game all about us. Needless to say, we consdered the photographc record of our trp the most mportant part of t. would menton that have made many safars after the Bongo wthout any success, few whte men. have had that luck. Few holdays can be calculated to gve such relaxaton of the mnd as that of two weeks spent n the wde open spaces of Afrca's huntsman's paradse,
