Mddlesex County Republcan women selected Metuehen as ther battle ground when the annual electon of the Mddlesex County Councl was held n that borough last Saturday and South Amboy women were prornent n the fray all durng the day : lona» conflct. The prncpal cause of dscord was,- an open conflct between two rval groups of women battlng for domnaton on the county organzaton and no attempt was made to conceal the open hostlty between ft facton sad " to be backed by a promnent Repub-, lcan male leader n the county and ther opponents. So serously was the party harmony dsrupted durng the sesson, that t s predcted by G. 0. P. members that the.damage done wll not be repared n less than a year. Hostltes began at the outset of the early mornng sesson when Mrs. John Perkns of ths cty reported the membershp 196, Accordng to the by-laws, pnly ' those members pad up untl Deeem- ber 31, 1930, were enttled to vote. Mrs. Irvng House, of ths cty, took excepton to the report as ;rendered and nqured whore all the members came from. Mrs. Perkns explaned thatup untl the last mnute, the number of pad tp members had been 133, but that close to md- > nght on December 31, dues were pad to cover 196 members as stated n the report. Mrs. House, apparently not satsfed wth the explanaton as offered, exclamed, "I don't beleve t anyhow." Mrs. Perkns became offend- ed nt the comment and sad that Mrs. House's remarks were humlatng, and thd frst phase of the conflct that lasted throughout the day, was begun. He also sad pork was just as good for entlng n the summer as n the wntor, but lke other meats must bu kept n refrgeraton, as t spols more quckly than any other meat. The common enemy of the hog s sad to be an ntestnal paraste or ouml worm: In former years, a common dsease among hogs was cholera, but ths s now more easly controlled. A very fne talk on the Mddlesex County Vocatonal Schools was gven by Clfford Purcell, of New Brunswck, on Tucsdny before members of the South Amboy Rotary Club, at the regular weekly luncheon meetng at Cady's. Mr. Purcell, who s the drector of the county vocatonal schools, proved hmself a Very able and nterestng speaker. In ntroducng the speaker, Presdent "Bll" Dey, sad hewas sure the talk would be nterestng as the county schools have a natonal reputaton and numerous educators from all parts of the country have vsted them. At the present tme there are tw> vocatonal schools n ths county, one n New Brunswck and the other n Perth Amboy. The enrollment now conssts of 280 students at the county seat school and 230 at the cro3s rver school. Mr. Purcell also'told of the contnuaton school at South Rver, whch s under hs drocton. Ths school now, he sad, takes care of 190 grls and (S3 boys. The frst vocatonnl school n the country was establshed n New Brunswck n 191C, wth three teachers and twenty-fve boys. There are also nght schools n varous towns n the county, and at present the enrollment conssts of 5(50 men and 100 women. The speaker declared that at present the facltes of both schools are nadequate, there beng now a watng lst of seventy for admsson to the New Brunswck school and between foj-ty and ffty to the Perth Ajnboy school. The courses take two years, the student attendng school sx hours a day, fve (Jays a week, fne half of the day s 'gven over to shop work and the other half to related acalemc subjects. Any boy or grl ovor fourteen years of age, who has attended school and passed the frst ss :rades of grammar school, s elgblefor admsson. However, Mr. Purcell sad that a student havng passed through the eghth grade, s far more ftted for the work to be' done anl makes better progress. Contnung he sad that t was not the ntenton of. the school nor ts am to turn out mechancs, that the course smply gave the boy or grl a prelmnary tranng. It s sad that as much shop experence can be ganed at the vocatonal schools n two years as one would secure as an apprentce n an ordnary shop n four years. ~al Rotarans were gven an nvtaton by Mr. Purcell to vst ether of the schools and vew the splendd work beng accomplshed. The table prze, a box of cgars, was won by Charles Straub. Vstnqr Rotarans were Colby Dll, Clarehee Hawk and Joseph Seaman, of Perth Amboy, and Alfred Compton, of Perth Amboy was a guest of Mr. Dll. PACE SIX THE SOUTH AMBOY CITIZEN FMDAY, JANUARY 23, 1931 greater Auto Speed Causes More Accdents! 2. Improved Roads. ; States, countes and muncpaltes have expended large sums of money n recent years n mprovng roads, the result bpng the operaton of j hs loss s also mourned by many commuters who frequently stopped automobles at greater speeds over' to play wth hm a moment whle on longer dstances. Moreover, the m- ther way to- and from the ralroad proved roads have made t possble, staton. A reward has been, offered to operate automobles the year for George's return. around, n good and bad /weather. These factors have ncreased both tho; exposure to accdent and the resultng damages. 3, Closed Automobles. In 1925 only 66.5 percent of tho prvate passenger automobles manu-j factured were closed cars, whereas,, n 1929 the percentage of closed cars, manufactured was 89.4 percent. Ths! Jones to resgn took place n 1921 development has resulted n the op-j when Mrs. Ralph Goff was apponted eraton of more automobles n n-, to the.board and Jones and Spencer clement weather when the accdent Swan resgned, refusng to serve n hazard s greater. the hoard wth a woman. Now, howover, thngs are dfferent. Jones ac- 4. Purposes for whch Automobles ore Used. cepts the Irony of fate wthout protest. Improvements n automobles from.a mechancal standpont have contnuously ncreased ther dependablty as a means of transportaton, the Runs on a bank as the result of a bankruptcy aro more or 'less common, but Trenton has a bankrupt result' beng a greater use of automobles for all sorts of purposes. Tn addton to the greatly ncreased use whoso falure' threatens to cause a of prvate passenger as well as commercal automobles n busness, the prvate passenger automoblo has been subjected to greatly ncreased famly use through operaton by several members of the famly. Evdence of ths growng famly use la found n a study made durng the past year whch shows that the number of women operatng prvate passenger automobles has ncreased to 24 percent of the total number of operators. 6. Greater Congeston The number of automobles on the hghways n the Unted States has grown from 22,000,000 n 1928 to 26,500,0000 n 1929 (an ncrease, of 20 per cent). Durng the same perod there has also been a steady ncrease n populaton. The result ljas been an ncreasng congeston of the hghways, thereby ncreasng the chance of accdent occurrence. These developments, occurrng s' multaneously, have had a cumulatve effect upon the accdent stuaton, namely, of ncreasng materally the hazard of automoble operaton. If evdence other than the experence of. the nsurance cojnpancs s needed to substantate ths, t s to be found n the ncrease n the number of persons accdentally klled and njured. In 1926, 23,500 persons were Klled as the result of motor vehcle accdents n the Unted States. In each successve year that number ncreased untl n 1929 31,000 per- sons weer klled. It s estmated th;t the number klled n 1930 wll be found to have exceeded 33,000. Ths ncrease n the number of deaths has been accompaned by a correspondng ncrease n the number of non-fatal personal njures sustaned n motor r vehcle accdents, both havng exceeded proportonately the ncrease n the number of automobles n use. It has been estmated that the total economc loss as the result of motor vehcle accdents n 1929 amounted to. $850,-!. 000,000.. Despte ths ncreased hazard of automoble operaton, t must not le assumed. that safety work has been neffectve. It does accomplsh results and t should be encouraged at every opportunty. Except for such actvtes, t s safe to suy that the upward trond of cost would havo been substantally greater. The Nutonal Bureau and ts membor companes Indvdually have been and nre constantly expendng mon'y and effort n the promoton of safety educaton and accdent preventon.
