Page 2 October 21, 2018 From the Desk of Father Raaser There are many Divine mysteries present within the Mass. It begins with the mystery of the Trinity, of God s forgiveness, of God speaking to us in Scripture, the perpetual sacrifice of the Cross, the mystery of the Passion, Death, Resurrection and Ascension of the Lord, the mystery of the Holy Spirit leading us to pray, the mystery of Holy Communion, to name a few. That is why in the beginning of the Church, the Mass was called, the Sacred Mysteries, the same phrase that is still used today in Mass. It is such a tremendous mystery, it is incorrect to say that the Mass is first of all a meal, or that it is a meal as much as or equal to the sacrifice. It is really the other way around. It is the sacrifice, from which we are allowed to eat and drink of the sacrificial meal. The original Jewish Passover sacrifice was not just the killing of the lamb but the eating of its flesh the meal to take and eat bringing the flesh into the person, and thus be changed by what is eaten. The Mass is not a holy play or a reenactment of the Last Supper, as most Protestants believe, but rather a making-present, here and now, of the sacrifice of the Lord on the Cross on Good Friday. So whenever the Mass is celebrated more like a meal to the detriment of the Holy Sacrifice, it is not surprising that Holy Communion becomes the high point of the liturgy, indeed the only point; and if one does not receive, one is left out. Why go to Mass otherwise? And after you get what you want, you just leave, as if you are being served at McDonald s. The Eucharist is not a participation trophy. The reception of Holy Communion is a very serious act. Are we receiving the Lord worthily, spiritually prepared, free from mortal sin? St. Paul in his Letter to the Corinthians has strong words about this: Whoever, therefore, eats the Bread or drinks the Cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of profaning the Body and Blood of the Lord. Let a person examine himself, and so eat of the Bread and drink of the Cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without discerning the Body eats and drinks judgment upon himself (1 Cor 11:27-29). The Catechism of the Catholic Church notes: anyone aware of having sinned mortally must not receive Communion without having received absolution in the Sacrament of Penance (CCC #1415). A mortal sin kills the relationship with God. It is an act that is serious in and of itself, you know it s a serious offense to God, and you fully choose to do it anyway. It is a total and complete sense of turning your back and disobedience to God. Sadly many people have a very carefree attitude regarding mortal sin and are choosing to deliberately and willingly live in a state of serious sin and still present themselves for Holy Communion at Mass. Our Lord gave us a remedy, medicine to fight against sin-it is a beautiful sacrament called Penance, Reconciliation, or Confession. The Sacrament of Penance is the spiritual remedy given us by Christ in order to restore our friendship with Him so that we might worthily receive Him in the Holy Eucharist. Confessions are offered here every Saturday from 9:30-10:00 AM and then again from 11:00-11:45 AM, or whenever the Holy Spirit impels you, just call the Parish Center. If you feel more comfortable to go to confession to some other Church, please do so.
