When we stop to consider the great gift of Jesus himself, the Son of God, it is easy for us to respond generously as we celebrate His Resurrection. Spiritual Regulations for the Great Fast Although our Church traditionally prescribed abstention from meat and dairy products in days gone by for the entire duration of the Great Fast, the following are the minimal Lenten regulations today: Abstinence from meat and all dairy products on the First Day of the Great Fast and on Good Friday. Abstinence from meat only on all Fridays of the Great Fast as well as Holy Saturday. It is also traditional to abstain from meat on Wednesdays during the Great Fast. Everyone should receive the Holy Mysteries of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist during the period from the onset of Great Fast to the Wednesday before Ascension Thursday. The Fasting and Abstinence regulations are not binding on persons 60 or older, the very poor, sick, nursing or pregnant women, children below the age of 14, and those who engage in physically very hard labor. However, all are urged, if able to do so, to observe the fasting and abstinence regulations. All the faithful are urged to attend the Lenten services such as the Presanctified Liturgy, Stations of the Cross, Akafist of the Passion and the Commemoration of the Deceased (Sorokousty). Such good deeds as almsgiving, visitation of the sick, Bible reading and praying for vocations to the priesthood and religious life are most earnestly recommended to all the Faithful. This year, families are especially urged to pray together in the mornings and evenings. Memoriam We offer love, prayers, and sympathy to Justina Eisenhart, Kassondra Martz and family and friends of Ruth Martz, member of Ss. Peter & Paul who fell asleep in the Lord this past week. May our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ comfort her family and friends and may Ruth s Memory be Eternal! Vichnaya Pamyat!

Please Help Us Improve Accessibility to Our Chancery You will recall that our Chancery moved into the former Cathedral school building, allowing for leasing out our former building to earn revenue for the archeparchy. The original plan envisioned an addition to accommodate an elevator. The cost was prohibitive well in excess of $ 400,000 or more. We proceeded to adapt the school building and to transfer the Chancery without providing for an elevator. So as to provide for those who need assistance to visit our offices, we are installing two chair lifts at a total cost of $ 25,000. One will provide for access to the main floor at the front entrance from the parking lot. The second will provide access to the top floor offices via the wide stairway on the 8th Street side of the building. This will assist in providing for persons who need assistance ascending between the floors. It is important that everyone feels welcome and able to visit our Chancery offices. We humbly ask your help in meeting this cost. Your contribution will assist in meeting the cost while at the same time, indicate your support for ensuring that physically challenged people are welcomed equally in the Chancery. God bless you for your concern, and for your anticipated understanding and generous assistance. Your donation can be sent to the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia, 810 N Franklin Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123. Thank-you! + Stefan Soroka, Metropolitan-Archbishop Great Fast Liturgical Guidelines The weekdays of the Great Fast are aliturgical. No Divine Liturgy, even for funerals, should be celebrated. Funeral Divine Liturgies are permitted on the liturgical day of Saturday. On Wednesdays and Fridays of the Great Fast, the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is to be celebrated. Typika may be used the other days. The Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is to be celebrated for Sunday Liturgies during this time. Flowery (Palm) Sunday, March 25 is also the Feast of the Annunciation this year and the liturgical propers and scriptural readings for both feasts are to be taken at the Divine Liturgies. During Holy Week, the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts is to be celebrated Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. There is no Divine Liturgy celebrated on Good Friday and Holy Saturday. On Holy Thursday evening, Vespers with Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great should be celebrated. On Holy Saturday evening, Vespers with the Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great is to be celebrated. Ss. Think of why the Great Fast occurs during the early Spring and why Easter Sunday falls on the Sunday of the first full moon following the vernal equinox. Spring is a time for renewed growth life itself begins to shake off the slumber of dormancy during the cold, dead, Winter months. We engage in Spring cleaning of our homes during this time where the weather thaws off the frost of the past. What better time than now to allow God to help us renew our tired and dormant spirits?

3rd Sunday of the Great Fast Veneration of the Holy Cross Troparion Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your Inheritance; grant victory to Your Church over her enemies and protect Your people by Your cross. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, Now and ever and forever, Amen. Kontakion No longer does the flaming sword guard the gates of Eden; for on them one finds the most glorious seal, the Tree of the Cross. By it the sorrow of death and the victory of the Abyss have been conquered. For You, O my Savior, stood and called out to those in the Abyss: Enter again into paradise. Instead of: Holy God We bow to Your cross, O Lord, and we praise Your holy resurrection. Prokimenon Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance. V. To You, O Lord, I call; my God be not deaf to me. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! V. Remember Your flock whom you built up long ago. V. God is our King from time past, the Giver of Help through all the land. Alleluia (3x) Communion Hymn O Lord, let the light of Your countenance shine upon us. Alleluia! Epistle: Heb 4:14-5:6 Gospel: Mk 8:34-9:1 Fast This Lent? In the words of Pope Francis: Fast from Hurting Words and say Kind words. Fast from Sadness and be filled with Gratitude. Fast from Anger and be filled with Patience. Fast from Pessimism and be filled with Hope. Fast from Worries and Trust in God. Fast from Complaints and contemplate Simplicity. Fast from Pressures and be Prayerful. Fast from Bitterness and fill your heart with Joy. Fast from Selfishness and be Compassionate to others. Fast from Grudges and be Reconciled. Fast from Words and be Silent so you can listen. Holy Thursday Services On Holy Thursday, March 29, the Ukrainian Catholic Archbishop of Philadelphia, who is the spiritual leader of Ukrainian Catholics in the United States, Archbishop Stefan Soroka will be the main celebrant during religious services at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Mount Carmel. All the faithful from throughout the archeparchy are invited and encouraged to attend this Divine Liturgy on Holy Thursday starting at 10:30 AM. The Holy Thursday service commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the priesthood of Jesus Christ at the Last Supper. During the service, there will also be the traditional Washing of the Feet of 12 priests by auxiliary Bishop Andriy Rabiy, reenacting the washing of the feet of His apostles by Jesus as recounted in the Gospel of John. Since he became Metropolitan-Archbishop, Archbishop Stefan has conducted these Holy Thursday services in various deaneries of the expansive Philadelphia Ukrainian Archeparchy, which includes eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and the District of Columbia. Meditation for the Third Sunday of the Great Fast from Metropolitan Stefan Daily we are bombarded with messages which reveal the steadfast rivalry between various political and social groups. Each contends that they are acting in the interests of all in society. Panels of media experts debate the merits of what people in power say and do. Yet, there is a reluctance to surrender to some common ground. Where is the gift of sacrifice in the interests of the other, the common good? St. Paul, in his Epistle to the Philippians, exhorts us to do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also everyone for those of others. Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus (Philippians 2:3-5). The veneration of the Holy Cross on the third Sunday of Great Fast reminds us of Jesus sacrifice on the cross for you and for me. Jesus died voluntarily for our salvation. As you venerate the Holy Cross, resolve to live with greater humility. Let go of rigid attitudes and perceptions. Resolve to show greater understanding for the benefit of the common good. Participate in the special Lenten services, being a part of a community of faith. A Blessed Journey in Great Fast!
