Riley Scripture Reflection: In today s Gospel we hear Peter proclaim who his friend and teacher really is when he says to Jesus: You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Peter experienced many ups and downs as a follower of Jesus. He could be impetuous, impatient, fearful and even unfaithful. After Peter had boasted of his fidelity to the Lord, he adamantly denied him three times. It seemed that Peter had burned his bridges, but Jesus lovingly rebuilt them and restored Peter to service. Peter would become the chief steward of the Gospel in the early church. Peter had failed Jesus, but with Jesus, failure is not the end. Reflect this week on the times you have failed Jesus. Were you open to Jesus forgiveness? Did it make you a better steward of the Gospel? No one promised that it would be. It is counter-cultural to most things in the world today. However, putting God first in all things, living a life of gratitude and being generous with our time, talent and treasure brings tremendous joy to those who are disciplined. O God our Creator, providently from your hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call ll us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength gth of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every very trial withstood and every danger overcome overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us us this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
