Thank you for your prayers offered for the students who joined me on the pilgrimage to the March for Life in Washington D.C. The trip was safe on all accounts. It was a time of prayer, formation, fun and community. The trip is part of a triad of opportunities we present to our students to help form them in the saving ways of the Gospel. Our SHINE/Love Begins Here service trip helps form our young in the ways of justice with hands and feet serving the poor. Our Stuebenville/GB Youth Conference trips form hearts in the ways of prayer and worship. Our March for Life trip and other local witness helps form minds and souls into viewing the world the way God does, through the lens of dignity and the Culture of Life. As with all of us, it is a life long work. The students prepared for the trip by each writing essays reacting to four documents and talks from Pope Francis. They focused on the vulnerable, family, human dignity and abortion. They also attended a weekend retreat with speakers on these topics covering the dignity of all persons from conception to natural death. To be Pro-Life means to be support all life from the moment is created until God calls it to himself. We were in Washington from Wednesday evening until Sunday afternoon. On Wednesday night we settled in with a meal, orientation and prayer. Thursday took us to the U.S. Capitol where we met with the Legislative Assistant to Representative Paul Ryan. Our group of 20 were alone in the Speakers Office for about an hour. Our students asked questions on present legislation relating to unborn persons, healthcare and poverty. It was a well-rounded discussion bringing the full-breadth of the Church s voice. He said in the end our presence in Washington encourages and reminds other pro-life public servants that they are not alone and that they are supported. That was consoling. We toured the Capital a bit and then headed over to the National Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Thousands were gathering. Our group gathered there with Sisters of Life out of the Archdiocese of New York. These sisters become spiritual mothers and caregivers for those caught in the fear of an unknown pregnancy, among their other works. They were amazing. Friday was the March itself. We joined 30,000 other students and adults at the Verizon Center, along with another 10,000 at the D.C. Armory for an opening Mass at 830am led by Cardinal Wuerl of Washington D.C. It was a beautiful Mass. The homily focused on not being afraid of letting God change you and believing that the witness of holiness is more powerful than might and brute force. It was a moving homily. We then all proceeded out of the Verizon Center to join the half a million other persons gathered near the Washington Monument for the March itself. The March led up Constitution Avenue to the Supreme Court where we listened to some moving testimonies by the group called Silent No More. These are persons who have found healing after the sadness of abortion. We met up with Bishop Ricken and the Diocese of Green Bay for a portion of the March. That was wonderful. Cont...

February 4 & 5, 2017 PAGE 3 Each night of the week we prayed the Breviary of the Church and reflected on what God showed to us that day. We had Mass every day. The students participated generously. Saturday allowed us time to rest. We first gathered and prayed at a local abortion facility. The Diocese of LaCrosse also prayed here. We then ventured out to tour the National Memorials of our nations wars, the Martin Luther King memorial and those to our past presidents. The Lincoln Memorial remains especially moving each year. Each year I read the Gettysburg address engraved on its wall and the words seem ever applicable. It is for us the living rather to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us. The work of building a Culture of Life continues. Fr. Mark Vander Steeg Religious Education News Adam Horn R.E. For most of us, prayer can become a source of frustration as we struggle to find a few minutes to calm our minds. The good news is that you can overcome your difficulties with prayer, and, it is easier than you might think.
