TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
ST HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO OCTOBER 14, 2018 WHO KNEW AT THE TIME THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN IN 1978 THAT THE MAN ON THE LEFT, POPE PAUL VI, AND THE MAN ON THE RIGHT, ARCHBISHOP OSCAR ROMERO OF EL SALVADOR, WOULD ON THIS DAY, OCTOBER 14, 2018, BOTH BE NAMED SAINTS! Photo Credit: https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/oscar-romero-and-pope-paul-vi-to-be-canonized-october-14-18991 Giovanni Montini served as Archbishop of Milan prior to his election as Bishop of Rome in 1963. As Pope Paul VI, he oversaw much of the Second Vatican Council, which had been opened by Pope St. John XXIII, and in 1969 promulgated a new Roman Missal. He died in 1978, and was beatified by Pope Francis Oct. 19, 2014. Apart from his role in the council, Paul VI is most widely know for his landmark encyclical Humanae Vitae, which was published in 1968 and reaffirmed the Church s teaching against contraception in wake of the sexual revolution. He died in 1978. This year marks the 50th anniversary the historic encyclical. catholicnewsagency.com/news/oscar-romero-andpope-paul-vi-to-be-canonized-october-14-18991 Archbishop Romero lived in a time of unspeakable violence and inhumanity. He became the voice of the voiceless poor in the country who were being murdered on a daily basis for the crime of asking for a little greater share in the country s land and wealth. It was very clear to Romero that he would most likely be killed for his challenging of the government and the military. In this belief, he offered himself to God: "If God accepts the sacrifice of my life, may my death be for the freedom of my people. A bishop will die, but the Church of God, which is the people, will never perish. I do not believe in death without resurrection. If they kill me I will rise again in the Salvadoran people. On the evening of March 24, 1980, while saying Mass in the chapel of Divine Providence Hospital, Archbishop Romero was shot by a paid assassin shortly after he concluded his homily.
